The vacuum ultraviolet absorption spectrum of diatomic calcium

Calcium granules (99.5%) have been heated to 615°C in a tantalum furnace and the absorption spectrum has been observed on the SA 61 beam line of SUFERACO (Orsay) using a 3-metre Balzers monochromator down to the -LiF cut-off (1015 Å). An intense Rydberg series has been observed between 1900 and 1500 Å. This series extends from n = 5 to n = 12 and gives the ionization potential at 63068 cm^?1 (1585.6 Å) or 7.819eV and the quantum defect δ = 1.73.     

Synthesis, Structure and Alkali Metal Ion Binding Properties of a Podand Polyether Derived from Calix[4]arene, 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25,27-di(phenylmethoxy)-26,28-di(2‘-methoxyethoxy)-calix[4]arene

The ligand 5,11,17,23-tetra-t-butyl-25,27-di(phenylmethoxy)-26,28-di(2-methoxy-ethoxy)calix[4]arene,designed as an analogue of some calixcrown speciesin order to evaluate possible origins of their selectivity in alkali metal ion binding, has been synthesised and structurally characterised by X-ray crystallography. The crystals are monoclinic, P21/n, a = 15.940(6), b = 19.388(5), c = 20.020(5) Å, = 109.10(2) deg., Z = 4, conventional R on |F| being 0.073 for 3454 independent, observed (I > 3(I)) reflections. 1H-NMR studies in 1:1 CD3CN/CDCl3solvent have shown that the ligand exerts a strong preference for the lighteralkali metal ions (Li+ and Na+) contrary to the binding behaviour of knowncalixcrowns. This may reflect interactions restricted to the lower rim donor atoms without concomitant interaction with the calixarene -electrons, perhaps because the latter interactions are substituted by those with the benzyl group -electrons.     

Divergence of the stationary Kalman filter for correct and for incorrect noise variances

The convergence properties of the estimation error covariancefor the Kalman filter are analysed. Criteria are derived forconvergence or divergence of the estimation error if the time-invariantKalman filter is used, possibly designed for incorrect noisedata. The analysis uses recently developed convergence resultsfor the solution of the matrix Riccati differential equation.     

α-TERTHIENYL PHOTOSENSITIZES DAMAGE TO pBR322 DNA

alpha-Terthienyl photosensitizes single strand breaks in pBR322 DNA. Almost identical results were observed under oxygen and under argon. In the presence of oxygen, this DNA nicking was enhanced by histidine and was not affected by superoxide dismutase, catalase, or the antioxidant BHT. Although chemical damage to DNA treated with alpha-terthienyl plus near-UV was clearly demonstrated in vitro, transformation in E. coli with this damaged pBR322 DNA still took place. Likewise, Haemophilus influenzae DNA transforming activity was not significantly decreased by photosensitization with alpha-terthienyl.

Abstract— A study of the delayed luminescence and thermoluminescence of fluorescein and others dyes in boric acid glass gives evidence of photoionisation of these compounds. To account for the energetic aspect of the photoionisation, a two photon process involving solute-solvent proton exchange is proposed. The participation of the heterogeneous structure of the glass in the mechanism of the photoionisation is confirmed.     

Fourier transform infrared spectrum of carbon disulphide in the 4ν2 + ν3 band region near 3100 cm−1

Fourier transform spectra have been recorded for carbon disulphide CS₂ in the region of the 4ν₂ + ν₃ band near 3100 cm^?1. The data analysis has determined new molecular constants. Bands were also observed for the isotopomer ¹²C³²S³⁴S.     

MECHANISM OF PHOTOREDUCTION OF THIAZINE DYES BY EDTA STUDIED BY FLASH-PHOTOLYSIS-I

Abstract— The photoreduction of thiazine dyes by ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) was investigated by Rash photolysis. This reaction was found to occur according to a three-step mechanism. the first being the formation of the dye triplet state followed, in weakly acid solutions, by protonation. During the second step, the triplet state of the dye disappears through two competing processes: spontaneous deactivation and reaction with EDTA, which leads to the semireduced dye. The third step leads to the leucodye. It is shown that the overall quantum yield of photoreduction is governed by the second step and can be calculated from the ratio of the rate constants of the two elementary processes involved in this step. This ratio was measured over a wide pH range.     

O2 broadening of carbon disulphide 12C32S2 in the v 3 and v 3—v 1 bands

Using a tunable diode laser spectrometer, we have measured O₂ broadening coefficients of ¹²C³²S₂ for 31 lines in the v ₃ fundamental band near 6.5 μm and 12 lines in the v ₃—v ₁ band near 11.4 μm. The collisional halfwidths are obtained by fitting the spectral lines with a Voigt and a Rautian profile. The broadening coefficients of ¹²C³²S₂-O₂ are also calculated from semiclassical theory involving, in addition to electrostatic interactions, successively the atom-atom Lennard-Jones model and a simple formulation for the anisotropic dispersion forces, leading to more satisfactory results.     

Spectra of carbon disulphide in the 3400–4400 cm−1 region by Fourier transform spectroscopy

Fourier transform spectra have been recorded for carbon disulphide (CS₂) in the region between 3400 cm^?1 and 4400 cm^?1. A data analysis has determined new molecular constants: 14 bands were observed for the main isotopic form ¹²C³²S₂, two bands for the isotopomer ¹²C³²S³⁴S and one each for ¹²C³²S³³S and ¹³C³²S₂.
