A Selenium‐Nitrogen Chain with Selenium in Different Oxidation States

The reaction of tBuNH₂ with a mixture of SeCl₂ and SeOCl₂ in a 6:2:1 molar ratio produces the novel selenium‐nitrogen chain ClSeN(tBu)Se(O)Cl ( 4 ), in which the selenium atoms are in two different oxidation states, Se^II and Se^IV. The crystal structure of 4 is compared with that of the related Se^II/Se^II system ClSeN(tBu)SeCl ( 1 ) and differences are attributed to hyperconjugative effects. The energetics of the formation of 4 via two different routes are elucidated by PBE0/def2‐TZVPP calculations.     

Two chitinase-like proteins abundantly accumulated in latex of mulberry show insecticidal activity

Background  

Plant latex is the cytoplasm of highly specialized cells known as laticifers, and is thought to have a critical role in defense against herbivorous insects. Proteins abundantly accumulated in latex might therefore be involved in the defense system.     

Acid-base equilibria in nonpolar media. 4. Extension of the self-consistent basicity scale in THF medium. Gas-phase basicities of phosphazenes

Eleven new phenyl-substituted phosphazenes (P1-, P3-, and P4-bases) have been synthesized by the Staudinger or the Kirsanov reactions. The UV-vis spectrophotometric titration method was used to establish the relative basicity of them, and to extend the ion-pair basicity scale for THF medium. These measurements together with our previous work give a continuous basicity scale in THF ranging from 2.6 (2-MeO-pyridine) to 26.6 (2-Cl-C6H4P4(pyrr) phosphazene) in pKalpha units: that is for 24 orders of magnitude and containing 58 compounds (pyridines, anilines, amines, guanidines, amidines, phosphazenes). Ion-pair formation was taken into account by using the Fuoss equation. DeltapKip values of some phosphazene indicators estimated earlier by the 13C NMR method were revised. For some of the phosphazenes gas-phase basicities were measured.     

New practical synthesis of prazosin

A new four step synthesis of prazosin, 2-[4-(2-furoyl)piperazin-l-yl]-4-amino-6,7-dimethoxyquinazoline, has been described. The method is also adaptable for the preparation of other substituted 4-aminoquinazolines. The yields are good in every step and the reactions are performed with ease. Prazosin hydrochloride of high purity is obtained directly in the last step.     

M-Mode Color Doppler Ultrasonic Imaging of Vertical Tongue Movement During Articulatory Movement

To observe and estimate the movement of the tongue, ultrasonic investigation is the most harmless real-time monitoring procedure for analyzing articulatory movements. Color Doppler ultrasonic imaging is special in that it can only sample a moving target, and it can indicate the velocity and direction of the target by color and brightness in real time. This study assessed and demonstrated the validity of M-mode color Doppler ultrasonic imaging to observe the movements of the tongue during syllable repetition tasks performed by normal subjects and dysarthric patients, those affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cerebellar ataxia, Parkinsonism, and polymyopathy. When the transducer was set below the jaw, upward movement was indicated by a blue signal and downward movement was indicated by a red one on the screen of the ultrasound machine. We also measured the velocity of the tongue by contrast scale classified by 15 degrees. Thus, we could observe vertical tongue movement by a color-coded pattern after quantitative analysis. The Doppler signal patterns of normal subjects were verified by simultaneous video x-ray fluorography recordings. The findings for dysarthric patients corresponded well with previously reported features analyzed by other methods. Therefore, color Doppler ultrasonic imaging of the tongue is a useful procedure to researchers for clinical speech and voice studies.     

Physiological Studies of Retrusive Movements of the Human Tongue

SUMMARY: This study identified that physiologically the superior pharyngeal constrictor muscle at the level of the base of the tongue contributes to retrusive movement of the tongue with constriction of the mid-pharyngeal cavity and possesses unique properties in terms of motor speech control along with the genioglossus muscle. From a kinematic study involving trans-nasal fiberscopy and lateral X-ray fluorography, retrusive movement of the tongue was highly correlated with constrictive movement of the mid-pharyngeal cavity. An electromyographic study revealed that the superior pharyngeal constrictor muscle at the level of the base of the tongue contributes to retrusive movement of the tongue and that the genioglossus muscle contributes to protrusive movement. We also noted that this relationship between the activities of these two muscles were in response to postural changes during vowel productions without changes in the acoustic features. These findings suggest that these two muscles act not only antagonistically to produce retrusive and protrusive movement of the tongue, but also they complement each other to conserve the shape of the vocal tract for speech production. The functional relationship between these two muscles could contribute the consecutive movement of human speech production under various conditions and might be useful when applying rehabilitation approaches for the patients with neurological speech and swallowing disorders.     

Acid-base equilibria in nonpolar media. 2.(1) Self-consistent basicity scale in THF solution ranging from 2-methoxypyridine to EtP(1)(pyrr) phosphazene

Relative ion-pair basicities Delta(pK)(ip) of 25 substituted aryl and alkyl iminophosphoranes (phosphazenes) and 20 other N-bases (various pyridines, amines, amidines) have been measured in THF medium using the UV-Vis and/or (13)C NMR methods. The Delta(pK)(ip) values were corrected for ion pairing using the Fuoss equation to obtain relative ionic basicities Delta(pK)(alpha). Based on the measurements, a basicity scale ranging from 2-methoxypyridine to EtP(1)(pyrr) and having a total span over 18 pK units has been created. The scale has been anchored to the pK(alpha) value of triethylamine (pK(alpha) = 12.5). The results are compared to pK(a) values in various other solvents and in the gas phase. The pK(alpha) values give better correlations than the pK(ip) values, thus indirectly validating the procedure of correction for ion pairing. The predictability of the basicity together with suitable spectral properties in the UV range make the phenylphosphazenes convenient neutral indicators in the high basicity range where the choice of neutral indicators is very limited.
