Loganin,loganic acid and periclymenoside,a new biosidic ester iridoid glucoside from Lonicera periclymenumL. (Caprifoliaceae)

Loganin ( 1 ), loganic acid ( 2 ), and periclymenoside ( 3 ) have been isolated from Lonicera periclymenum L . The structure of the new compound 3 and the identity of the others have been determined by chemical transformations and interpretation of the spectral data.     

Studies on platinum(II) and palladium(II) complexes of some N,N′-disubstituted thiourea derivatives

Summary A series of new Pt^II and Pd^II complexes of N,N-disubstituted thiourea derivatives of general formulae [MLCl₂]₂, [ML₂Cl₂] and [ML₄]Cl₂ have been prepared and characterised by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The reaction of these ligands with [M(DMSO)₂Cl₂], M = Pt, cis- or Pd, trans-, in CHCl₃ and EtOH at ambient temperature or under reflux, is described.     

Iron speciation by solid phase extraction and flame atomic absorption spectrometry using N,N′-bis-(2-hydroxy-5-bromobenzyl)-2-hydroxy-1,3-diiminopropane

A new Schiff base, N,N′-bis-(2-hydroxy-5-bromobenzyl)-2-hydroxy-1,3-diiminopropane, has been synthesized for the very sensitive determination of iron(III) and iron(II) in natural water samples. It enabled a very selective and rapid method for iron determination to be developed. The method has also been applied to total iron determination in sediment samples. In the preconcentration system, the Schiff base reagent is mixed with the samples and chelates containing iron(III). The complexes are then adsorbed on silica gel within a column system. Elution of the adsorbed chelate from the silica gel was performed with a small volume of acetone containing 2.5% nitric acid. The iron is measured off-line by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The method can be applied to the preconcentration, separation and speciation of iron. The effects of parameters such as pH, sample flow rate, eluent flow rate, foreign ions and ligand concentration have been investigated. The effect of humic acid that can produce complexes with metal ions in natural systems has also been investigated. The results obtained indicate that the method is not affected by the presence of up to 10 ppm humic acid, which would be a very high concentration to be present in natural systems. The solid phase extraction method developed has been applied to the determination of iron in both natural water samples and sediment samples. The LOD was found to be 0.17 mg L⁻¹ when no preconcentration was used, although preconcentration factors of 100 could be achieved. The recovery values for spiked samples were between 100 and 104%. The results were compared statistically with those from the standard 1,10 phenanthroline method used for iron speciation in water systems. A Student’s t-test indicated no significant difference between the two methods. In addition, this method was applied to the analysis of a certified sediment sample, LGC 6156. Generally, a 10-fold preconcentration factor was required for the analysis of natural water samples.     

Reduction of nitriles into aldehydes using a TMDS/V(O)(OiPr)3 reducing system

A simple and convenient method for the chemoselective reduction of nitriles into aldehydes using a 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane (TMDS)/triisopropoxyvanadium(V) oxide reducing system is described. Aromatic as well as aliphatic nitriles are reduced into the corresponding aldehydes in moderate to good yields.     

Generalized couette flow of a dipolar fluid between two parallel plates

Résumé Dans ce travail, on présente une solution du problème de l'écoulement d'un fluide dipolaire entre deux plaques parallèles, dont l'une est en mouvement et l'autre fixe, en présence d'un gradient de pression. On trouve qu'il n'y a pas d'effet dipolaire sur l'écoulement si le gradient de pression n'est pas appliqué, et que pour un fluide dipolaire avec =0, étant le rapport entre l'espace des deux plaques et la constante dipolaire du fluide, le profil de vitesse n'est pas affecté par le gradient de pression.     

Synthesis of tetraaryl-p-benzoquinones by Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of tetrabromo-p-benzoquinone

Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of tetrabromo-p-benzoquinone provide a convenient approach to tetraaryl-p-benzoquinones.     

Cyclization vs. Elimination Reactions of 5‐Aryl‐5‐hydroxy 1,3‐Diones: One‐Pot Synthesis of 2‐Aryl‐2,3‐dihydro‐4H‐pyran‐4‐ones

2‐Aryl‐2,3‐dihydro‐4H‐pyran‐4‐ones were prepared in one step by cyclocondensation of 1,3‐diketone dianions with aldehydes. The use of HCl (10%) for the aqueous workup proved to be very important to avoid elimination reactions of the 5‐aryl‐5‐hydroxy 1,3‐diones formed as intermediates. The TiCl₄‐mediated cyclization of a 2‐aryl‐2,3‐dihydro‐4H‐pyran‐4‐one with 1,3‐silyloxybuta‐1,3‐diene resulted in cleavage of the pyranone moiety and formation of a highly functionalized benzene derivative.     

Living fungal hyphae-templated porous gold microwires using nanoparticles as building blocks

Abstract  

A simple and environmentally benign green method is reported to decorate growing fungal hyphae with high loading of gold nanoparticles, which were initially produced using aqueous tea extract as a sole reducing/stabilizing agent. Inoculation of fungal spores in aqueous suspension of nanoparticles led to the growth of intensely red-coloured fungal hyphae due to the accumulation of gold nanoparticles. Heat treatment of these hybrid materials led to the formation of porous gold microwires. This report is thus an interesting example of using green and sustainable approach to produce nanostructured materials which have potential applications in catalysis, sensing and electronics.
