Adsorption of fission products onto soils using a fission multitracer

The adsorption behavior of fission products to various soils was studied using a multitracer. The multitracer was prepared by neutron irradiation of ²³⁵U. Distribution coefficients of fission products were obtained for seventeen kinds of Japanese soils. It was found that zirconium, niobium, and rare earth elements show high distribution coefficients for all soil samples, however, elements like alkali metals show varied values.     

Inhibitory effects of tetragalloylglucose on the complex II of mitochondrial respiratory chain of Ascaris muscle

The effects of tetragalloylglucose (1,2,3,6-tetra-O-galloyl-beta-D-glucose) on purified complex II (succinate-ubiquinone oxidoreductase) of the mitochondrial electron transport system of Ascaris muscle were studied. Both succinate-ubiquinone-1 (Q1) oxidoreductase, and succinate dehydrogenase measured with 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)- 2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) in the presence of phenazine methosulfate (PMS) were inhibited by tetragalloylglucose. The inhibitions of both reductase activities of complex II were of competitive type, and the inhibitor constant (Ki) for Ascaris complex II (148 nM) was lower than that for rat liver complex II (1.5 microM). Thus, Ascaris complex II is much more sensitive to this inhibitor than the mammalian counterpart.     

Position — Sensitive single-wire proportional counter for conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy

A position-sensitive single-wire proportional counter for the INS 2 air-core spectrometer has been improved to take conversion electron Mössbauer spectrum as a function of electron energy with a multichannel mode. The position resolution at 13.6 keV was found to become 1.6 mm with the counter gas pressure of 320 Torr. The position resolution was obtained as a function of energy between 7 and 60 keV for gas pressure of 40 Torr, 160 Torr and 320 Torr. The L, M and N conversion electron spectrum of the 14.4 keV transition in⁵⁷Fe was taken with the present system. Overall momentum resolution was found to be 0.23% for the L₁-line and 0.19% for the M₁ line.     

Adsorption of fission products on a metal surface in nitric acid solutions: Radiochemical study using a multitracer

Adsorption behavior of fission products in nitric acid solution on various alloys and metals was studied by using a multitracer produced by neutron irradiation of UO₂. The adsorption behavior of the fission products ⁹⁹Mo, ¹³¹I, ¹³²Te, ¹⁴⁰La, and ¹⁴³Ce, and ²³⁹Np was simultaneously studied. Some chemical decontamination tests were also examined. Clear adsorption of ⁹⁹Mo, ¹³¹I, and ¹³²Te was observed, whereas adsorption of ¹⁴⁰La, ¹⁴³Ce, and ²³⁹Np was not. The adsorption characteristics were discussed by considering anion-exchange reaction and surface complexation.

Precise determination of bromine in PP resin pellet by instrumental neutron activation analysis using internal standardization

Instrumental neutron activation analysis with the internal standardization was applied to the precise determination of Br in polypropylene resin of candidate certified reference material. The known amount of ¹⁹⁷Au was used as an internal standard to compensate for neutron flux inhomogeneity, to improve the γ ray measurement uncertainty and the linearity of the calibration curves. The reliability of the proposed method validated using analytical results of BCR-681. The analytical result of Br in the sample was consistent with that obtained by ID-ICPMS. The relative expanded uncertainty (k = 2) was 1.5 %, and it was equivalent to that of ID-ICPMS.     

Determination of trace mercury in milk products and plastics by combustion in an oxygen bomb and cold-vapour atomic absorption spectrometry

Samples (ca. 1 g) are ignited by a nickel wire after the oxygen bomb has been charged with acidic peroxodisulphate solution. Precautions needed for measurements at the ng g^-1 level are described. Accuracy, tested with a standard reference material, is satisfactory. The relative standard deviations for samples of butter, margarine, milk powder and polyethylene are in the range 19–5%.     

The contact charge density of conduction electrons of Fe in Co metal as derived from internal conversion

From an internal-conversion measurement of the 14.4 keV transition ⁵⁷Fe, the contact 1 charge density of conduction electrons for Fe in Co metal was obtained to be ?_4s(0) = 4.6 ±0.4 a₀⁻³, which is close to theoretical values but is smaller than that for Fe in Fe metal obtained recently.     

Hydroquinone oxidation catalyzed by pyridine–Cu(II) complexes attached to polyorganosiloxane. II. Elucidation of factors related to catalytic activity

The oxidation of hydroquinone catalyzed by pyridine-Cu(II) complexes attached to polyorganosiloxane was investigated in the mixed solvent of methanol/water (vol. ratio 2/1). The catalytic oxidation followed Michaelis-Menten-like kinetics. The large k₂ term related to a turnover number indicated that the present polymeric catalysts have a remarkable effect on the activation process. The methylene number between the side-chain acid amido and pyridyl groups of the polymeric ligand was shown to be closely related to the appearance of hydrophobic effects in both the substrate-binding and the activation processes as deduced from the Michaelis constant and the thermodynamic and activation parameters. The binding parameters for 4-methoxyphenol with pyridyl-functionalized polyorganosiloxanes supported that the flexible backbone is also effective in the oxidation of hydroquinone. The Cu(II) complexes with pyridyl-functionalized polyorganosiloxane would have the structures distorted from square planar formation, which would promote the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I), as concluded from ESR spectroscopy and electrochemical measurement. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
