The interaction of silver ions with the isothiocyanatopenta-amminechromium(III) cation

The reaction of the isothiocyanatochromium(III) ion with silver ions produces adducts of the type [Cr(NH₃)₅NCSAg_n]X_n+2. For X = ClO₄, n = 1 and for NO₃, n = 2.     

Photoemission on highT c superconductors

Ultrathin-layer (AlAs) _m (GaAs) _m superlattices withm = 1, 2, and 3 were grown by molecular beam epitaxy and characterized by x-ray diffraction and photoluminescence measurements. The appearance of distinct satellite peaks around the Bragg reflections demonstrate the formation of high-quality layered crystals. The observed luminescence shows a maximum at 2.033 eV form = 3, and the emission energy decreases form = 2 andm = 1 as well as for them = 4 superlattice. Acoustic concomitants of emotional expression in operatic singing: The case of lucia in Ardi gli incensi

Two excerpts from the cadenza in Ardi gli incensi from Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor were acoustically analyzed for five recorded versions of the cadenza by Toti dal Monte, Maria Callas, Renata Scotto, Joan Sutherland, and Edita Gruberova. These acoustic parameters of the singing voices were correlated with preference and emotional expression judgments, based on pairwise comparisons, made by a group of experienced listener-judges. In addition to showing major differences in the voice quality of the five “dive” studied, the acoustic parameters suggested which vocal cues affect listener judgments. Two component scores, based on a factorial-dimensional analysis of the acoustic parameters, predicted 84% of the variance in the preference ratings.     

The hole concentration on oxygen sites in the highT c superconductor Y1−Ba2−Cu3−O7−x

From XPS core level spectroscopy the average copper charge on the Cu sites in the high temperature superconductor Y₁Ba₂Cu₃O_7–x is determined as function of the oxygen vacancy concentrationx. Analysis of these data leads to the suggestion that there are holes on the oxygen sites in the basal plane of the crystal structure. The probability for holes on these oxygen ions is rather constant for 0x0.3 with a value of 0.64 and decreases to zero forx=0.5. The dependence of the superconducting transition temperature on the hole concentration is discussed. An energy level diagram for Cu²⁺ and Cu³⁺ in YBa₂Cu₃O_7–x is constructed.     

Biodegradable nanogels prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization as potential drug delivery carriers: synthesis, biodegradation, in vitro release, and bioconjugation

Stable biodegradable nanogels cross-linked with disulfide linkages were prepared by inverse miniemulsion atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). These nanogels could be used for targeted drug delivery scaffolds for biomedical applications. The nanogels had a uniformly cross-linked network, which can improve control over the release of encapsulated agents, and the nanogels biodegraded into water-soluble polymers in the presence of a biocompatible glutathione tripeptide, which is commonly found in cells. The biodegradation of nanogels can trigger the release of encapsulated molecules including rhodamine 6G, a fluorescent dye, and Doxorubicin (Dox), an anticancer drug, as well as facilitate the removal of empty vehicles. Results obtained from optical fluorescence microscope images and live/dead cytotoxicity assays of HeLa cancer cells suggested that the released Dox molecules penetrated cell membranes and therefore could suppress the growth of cancer cells. Further, OH-functionalized nanogels were prepared to demonstrate facile applicability toward bioconjugation with biotin. The number of biotin molecules in each nanogel was determined to be 142,000, and the formation of bioconjugates of nanogels with avidin was confirmed using optical fluorescence microscopy.     

Marginal utility and restraints on gain maximization: The discrimination model of rational,repetitive choice

The Siegel‐Ofshe two‐component repetitive choice model, while demonstrating great predictive accuracy, is difficult to interpret and is very data‐inefficient. Reasons for these shortcomings are analyzed in detail, and a modified model is suggested. The new model can be more easily interpreted, provides greater data‐efficiency, and furthermore, holds up well when tested with available data. The importance of the new “discrimination” model for sociology lies mainly with two factors: first, it can explain deviations from gain maximization, and second, it demonstrates that individuals do not act directly on the basis of values (utility) but rather on the basis of marginal utility. A comparison of the discrimination model with the Camilleri‐Berger model (a model in which marginal utility plays no role) favors the former.     

Photoemission investigation of the high temperature superconductors La2−x Sr x CuO4

Photoemission spectra of the La_2–x Sr _x CuO₄ system which recently has been demonstrated of being capable to produce high temperature (T _c >35 K) superconducting compounds are reported. The photoemission spectra of the basic system (La₂CuO₄) and of samples which contain up to 20% Sr are not significantly different. The density of states at the Fermi energy is small (smaller than that of metallic Cu) and the samples show a possible small shift of the Cu 2p lines towards the trivalent position with increasing tendency to superconductivity. From the Sr 3d spectra a considerable amount of oxygen defects coordinated to the Sr ions is estimated.     

Teaching implications with regard to Analytical Chemistry in the civil service in West Europe based on the situation in Switzerland
