Measurements of the neutron-proton analyzing power in the energy range from 17 to 50 MeV

Measurements of the analyzing power A_y for neutron-proton scattering in the energy range from 17 to 50 MeV are reported. These data improve considerably the precision of the np data base in this energy range. Preliminary phase-shift analyses indicate reduced uncertainties in the np ³P(T = 1) phases and in the ³D(T = 0) phase shifts.     

Neutron-nucleus spin-spin interaction studied with polarized neutrons and polarized 59Co nuclei

We measured the spin-spin cross section of polarized ⁵⁹Co for polarized neutrons of 0.39–2.88 MeV in the perpendicular geometry. Comparing our results with existing data we conclude that the spin-spin potential is of the spherical type.     

Static nuclear polarisation and polarised targets

The possibilities and limitations of performing experiments with statically polarised targets are discussed. The employment of both neutron and proton beams of various energies is considered.     

RESPONSE OF LIGHT-GROWN WILD-TYPE and LONG HYPOCOTYL MUTANT CUCUMBER PLANTS TO END-OF-DAY FAR-RED LIGHT

Abstract— A long-hypocotyl mutant ( lh ) of cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L.) has been studied which has previously been shown to lack phytochrome control of growth in de-etiolated seedlings and thought to be modified with respect to the light-stable type of phytochrome. We have analyzed the response of lh mutant and isogenic wild-type (WT) plants to daily treatment with end-of-day far-red light (EODFR). Only the WT responded to this treatment resulting in a large increase in internode length; an increase in petiole length; changes in leaf development (increased area, decreased thickness and reduction in indentation); redistribution of dry matter from leaf blades to stem; increased apical dominance and promotion of tendril formation. There were only small or no significant effects on chlorophyll and total carotenoid content, chlorophyll alb ratio, soluble protein levels and net photosyn-thetic rates. The lh mutant failed to respond to EODFR treatment, and had the appearance of a shade-avoiding plant growing in extreme shade. The lh mutant appears to completely lack the phytochrome responses attributable to the type of phytochrome that is active in shade detection. A discussion of the possible roles of the stable and labile types of phytochrome in light grown plants follows.

Detailed spectroscopic, thermodynamic, and kinetic characterization of nickel(II) complexes with 2,2'-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline attained via equilibrium-restricted factor analysis

The molar absorptivity curves of the mono and bis nickel(II) complexes of 2,2'-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline have been deduced from the composite absorbance data of a series of equilibrium solutions in methanol using equilibrium-restricted factor analysis, a technique for extracting spectral and thermodynamic information for component species involved in solution equilibria. The solutions achieve equilibrium slowly (t(1/2) approximately 100 min) as the amounts of the tris and methanolato complexes are initially in excess. The relative formation constants at 293 K have been determined with a high degree of accuracy, especially for the bipyridine complexes: log(K(1)/K(2)) = 0.340(4) and log(K(2)/K(3)) = 1.091(6). Solubility limitations compromised the accuracy of the thermodynamic results for the phenanthroline complexes.
