Compressibility measurements are performed on a quantum point contact (QPC). Screening due to mobile charges in the QPC is measured quantitatively, using a second point contact. These measurements are performed from pinch-off through the opening of the first few modes in the QPC. While the measured signal closely matches a Thomas-Fermi-Poisson prediction, deviations from the classical behavior are apparent near the openings of the different modes. Density functional calculations attribute the deviations to a combination of a diverging density of states at the opening of each one-dimensional mode and exchange interaction, which is strongest for the first mode.  相似文献

The complex transmission amplitude of a quantum dot (QD) with Kondo correlation was measured near the unitary limit. The transmission phase was observed to evolve almost linearly over a range of about 1.5 pi when the Fermi energy was scanned through a spin degenerate energy level of the QD. Surprisingly, the phase in the Coulomb Blockade regime, with one more electron entering the dot, was strongly affected by a preexistence of Kondo correlation. These results suggest that a full explanation of the Kondo effect may go beyond the framework of the Anderson model.  相似文献

The second generation x-ray surface forces apparatus (XSFA-II) allows for the first time simultaneous in situ small-angle x-ray scattering and surface force measurements. We have used the XSFA-II to monitor shear-induced orientational transitions in a lyotropic model lubricant system. Upon applying small shear amplitudes (approximately 20 micrometer) to a relatively thick (approximately 800 micrometer) film, we observed evidence for the formation of an orientational boundary layer at the shearing surface. Time-resolved x-ray diffraction revealed the gradual transition to shear-favored orientation by growth of the boundary layer.  相似文献

Transparent conductive oxide (TCO) thin films play a significant role in recent optical technologies. Displays of various types, photovoltaic systems, and opto-electronic devices use these films as transparent signal electrodes. They are used as heating surfaces and active control layers. Oxides of TCO materials such as: tin, indium, zinc, cadmium, titanium and the like, exhibit their properties. However, indium oxide and indium oxide doped with tin (ITO) coatings are the most used in this technology.In this work, we present conductive transparent indium oxide thin films which were prepared using a novel triode sputtering method. A pure In2O3 target of 2 in. in diameter was used in a laboratory triode sputtering system. This system provided plane plasma discharge at a relatively low pressure 0.5-5 mTorr of pure argon. The substrate temperature was varied during the experiments from room temperature up to 200 °C. The films were deposited on glass, silicon, and flexible polyimide substrates. The films were characterized for optical and electrical properties and compared with the indium oxide films deposited by magnetron sputtering.  相似文献

We demonstrate the acquisition of stimulated Raman scattering spectra with the use of a single femtosecond pulse. High-resolution vibrational spectra are obtained by shifting the phase of a narrow band of frequencies within the input pulse spectrum, using spectral shaping. The vibrational lines are resolved via amplitude features formed in the spectrum after interaction with the sample. Using this technique, low-frequency Raman lines (<100 cm?1) are observed on both the Stokes and anti-Stokes sides.  相似文献

Biological media affect the physicochemical properties of cationic lipid-DNA complexes (lipoplexes) and can influence their ability to transfect cells. To develop new lipids for efficient DNA delivery, the influence of serum-containing media on the structures and properties of the resulting lipoplexes must be understood. To date, however, a clear and general picture of how serum-containing media influences the structures of lipoplexes has not been established. Some studies suggest that serum can disintegrate lipoplexes formed using certain types of cationic lipids, resulting in the inhibition of transfection. Other studies have demonstrated that lipoplexes formulated from other lipids are stable in the presence of serum and are able to transfect cells efficiently. In this article, we describe the influence of serum-containing media on lipoplexes formed using the redox-active cationic lipid bis(n-ferrocenylundecyl)dimethylammonium bromide (BFDMA). This lipoplex system promotes markedly decreased levels of transgene expression in COS-7 cells as serum concentrations are increased from 0 to 2, 5, 10, and 50% (v/v). To understand the cause of this decrease in transfection efficiency, we used cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and measurements of zeta potential to characterize lipoplexes in cell culture media supplemented with 0, 2, 5, 10, and 50% serum. Cryo-TEM revealed that in serum-free media BFDMA lipoplexes form onionlike, multilamellar nanostructures. However, the presence of serum in the media caused disassociation of the intact multilamellar lipoplexes. At low serum concentrations (2 and 5%), DNA threads appeared to separate from the complex, leaving the nanostructure of the lipoplexes disrupted. At higher serum concentration (10%), disassociation increased and bundles of multilamellae were discharged from the main multilamellar complex. In contrast, lipoplexes characterized in serum-free aqueous salt (Li(2)SO(4)) medium and in OptiMEM cell culture medium (no serum) did not exhibit significant structural changes. The zeta potentials of lipoplexes in serum-free media (salt medium and cell culture medium) were similar (e.g., approximately -35 mV). Interestingly, the presence of serum caused the zeta potentials to become less negative (about -20 mV in OptiMEM and -10 mV in Li(2)SO(4)), even though serum contains negatively charged entities that have been demonstrated to lead to more negative zeta potentials in other lipoplex systems. The combined measurements of zeta potential and cryo-TEM are consistent with the proposition that DNA threads separate from the lipoplex in the presence of serum, resulting in a decrease in the net negative charge of the surface of the lipoplex.  相似文献

Structure of AOT reverse micelles under shear   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Reverse micelles in the AOT/water/isooctane system, at various water contents (W(0)), were studied using rheometry and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments under static conditions and under shear. The SAXS analysis confirmed the spherical shape of the micelles at low water content and revealed a transition into elongated micelles at higher water content. A population of spherical micelles was found to coexist with the cylindrical ones, even above the percolation threshold. The shape transformation was correlated with a viscosity leap observed in the rheometry measurements. Reverse micelles at low water content under shear act as a Newtonian fluid, without any detectable shape changes. In contrast, reverse micelles at high water content behave as a shear thinning fluid. SAXS measurements at high water content under shear force have shown that the shear forces induced alignment of the cylindrical micelles in the flow direction, without any other changes in the micelle dimensions. The anisotropy parameter, a measure of the degree of the spatial order, was found to increase with increasing water content and shear rate.  相似文献

We extend the generating function technique for calculation of single molecule photon emission statistics (Zheng, Y.; Brown, F. L. H. Phys. Rev. Lett. 2003, 90, 238305) to systems governed by multi-level quantum dynamics. This opens up the possibility to study phenomena that are outside the realm of purely stochastic and mixed quantum-stochastic models. In particular, the present methodology allows for calculation of photon statistics that are spectrally resolved and subject to quantum coherence. Several model calculations illustrate the generality of the technique and highlight quantitative and qualitative differences between quantum mechanical models and related stochastic approximations when they arise. Calculations suggest that studying photon statistics as a function of photon frequency has the potential to reveal more about system dynamics than the usual broadband detection schemes.  相似文献
