Quantum-well states and resonances in thin single-crystal layers of noble metals on W(110) substrates

This paper reports on the first experimental observation of quantum-well states and sp-type resonances in thin single-crystal gold, silver, and copper layers formed on single-crystal W(110) surfaces, which result from spatial localization of Bloch-type electronic wave functions in a quantum well with potential barriers at the vacuum/metal and metal/W(110) interfaces. The quantization of the valence-band electronic structure in Au/W(110), Ag/W(110), and Cu/W(110) systems was studied experimentally using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy.

On the polarization interaction between two closely spaced conducting spheres in a uniform electrostatic field

An electrostatic interaction between two separate, grounded, uncharged, perfectly conducting spheres of different radii in a uniform electrostatic field is investigated. It is shown that at a small center-to-center distance of the spheres, the force of the polarization interaction between the spheres depends appreciably more weakly on that distance in comparison to the force of the electrostatic interaction of two elementary dipoles as it should be in view of the interaction between two like polarization charges.

Nonlinear vibrations of a charged drop in a third-order approximation in the amplitude of multimode initial deformation

A solution to the problem of nonlinear surface vibration of a charged ideal liquid drop is found in a third-order approximation in initial multimode deformation of the equilibrium spherical shape by the method of many scales. It is shown that the spectrum of modes that are responsible for the shape of the drop at an arbitrary time instant depends considerably on the spectrum of modes governing the initial deformation of the drop. The latter spectrum also has an effect on nonlinear corrections to the vibration frequencies and, consequently, on a nonlinear correction to the critical Rayleigh parameter, which specifies the stability of the drop against self-charge.     

Electronic spectrum and ballistic transport in a helical nanotube

A model of a helical nanotube permitting analytical calculation of the spectrum and wave functions is proposed and studied. It is shown that the specific character of the symmetry of the Hamiltonian results in an electronic spectrum having no band structure despite the periodicity of the potential along the system axis. A two-dimensional ribbon rolled into a helix and a quasi-one-dimensional helix in a magnetic field are considered as limiting cases of the model. It is shown that the presence of additional local minima in the subbands of the electronic spectrum leads to a nonmonotonic dependence of the ballistic conductance of the system on the chemical potential.     

Disintegration of a drop in an external electrostatic field

Regular features of the disintegration of both a drop of a perfectly conducting liquid and a drop of a dielectric liquid into two or three parts in an external uniform electric field are studied using the principle of minimizing the potential energy of the final state of a closed system with spontaneous processes.     

Electrophysical properties of nanocomposites based on poly(p-xylylene) and copper nanoparticles

Poly(p-xylylene)-based nanocomposites containing various amounts of copper have been prepared by vacuum codeposition on a cooled substrate. On the basis of the relationship between the electrical conductivity of composites and the volume content of copper, the percolation threshold has been estimated as 10%. This value coincides with the corresponding parameter derived from the concentration dependence of the electrical resistance temperature coefficient. It has been shown that the conductivity of the nanocomposites increases with the moisture content and their moisture sensitivity decreases with an increase in the content of copper from a concentration of 4%. An analysis of the kinetics of the sensor response measured for various moisture contents has shown that the capacity structure of the samples rearranges during adsorption of water. According to the advanced model, the value of the sensor response is determined by a reduction in the height of the potential barrier between nanoparticles and a change in the fractal characteristics of nanocomposites that results from the adsorption of water molecules.     

A neuron as a quantum-optical device: A model

Inversion in the structure of polyaminoacids and proteins is discussed, and the electrodynamic quantum-optical model of a neuron is constructed. The feasibility of the quantum-logical summation of exciting pulses by a nanomembrane is considered. The model is consistent with the physiology foundations and assumes implementation by means of techniques used in microelectronics, integrated optics, and nanooptics.
