Stark structure of the Yb3+ ion levels in (YbxY1?x)2Ti2O7 and the crystal field in rare-earth titanates with a pyrochlore structure

The absorption spectra of Yb₂Ti₂O₇ single crystals and the luminescence and luminescence excitation spectra of Y₂Ti₂O₇: Yb (1%) polycrystals were studied in the temperature range 4.2–300 K. The spectra were analyzed in terms of the crystal-field theory and the exchange-charge model. Based on the set of crystal-field parameters found for Yb₂Ti₂O₇, analogous sets of parameters were determined for other rare-earth titanates and proved to be in reasonable agreement with all available experimental data. __________ Translated from Fizika Tverdogo Tela, Vol. 47, No. 8, 2005, pp. 1376–1380. Continuous-wave and femtosecond laser operation of Yb:CaGdAlO4 under high-power diode pumping

We demonstrate the generation of 68 fs secant hyperbolic pulses at a 105 MHz repetition rate with an average power of 520 mW from a diode-pumped Yb(3+):CaGdAlO(4) mode-locked laser. A semiconductor saturable absorber allows passive mode locking, and a 15 W diode laser is used to pump directly the crystal. To our knowledge this represents the highest average power ever obtained for a sub-100 fs diode-pumped Yb-bulk laser.     

The UV,blue and green up-conversion luminescence of PbF2+GeO2:Er2O3 pumped with 650 nm

A detailed study of the spectroscopic properties of the PbF₂+GeO₂:Er₂O₃ vitroceramic sample upon 650 nm excitation was investigated. The absorption, emission, excitation spectra, and time-resolved spectra have been measured. The up-conversion of red radiation (650 nm) into UV (368 nm and 379 nm), blue (406.8 nm) and green (522 nm and 540 nm) emissions is observed for Er³⁺ ions in the sample. The up-conversion process involves a two-photon absorption for the violet, blue, and green emission bands. A three-photon process happens for another violet (379 nm) band.     

Influence of interparticle interactions on the kinetics of self-assembly and mechanical strength of nanoparticulate aggregates

Computer simulations based on Discrete Element Method have been performed in order to investigate the influence of interparticle interactions on the kinetics of self-assembly and the mechanical strength of nanoparticle aggregates.Three different systems have been considered.In the first system the interaction between particles has been simulated using the JKR (Johnson,Kendall and Roberts) contact theory,while in the second and third systems the interaction between particles has been simulated using van der Waals and electrostatic forces respectively.In order to compare the mechanical behaviour of the three systems,the magnitude of the maximum attractive force between particles has been kept the same in all cases.However,the relationship between force and separation distance differs from case to case and thus,the range of the interparticle force.The results clearly indicate that as the range of the interparticle force increases,the self-assembly process is faster and the work required to produce the mechanical failure of the assemblies increases by more than one order of magnitude.

Diode-pumped Pr:BaY2F8 continuous-wave orange laser

We report the realization of the continuous wave laser emission in the orange at 607 nm from a Pr:BaY(2)F(8) (Pr:BYF) crystal pumped by a blue GaN laser diode. A maximal output power of 78 mW is obtained in a quasi-single transverse mode beam. The effect of reabsorption losses at the laser wavelength is also evidenced.
