Active electric near field imaging of electronic devices

An active two dimensional near field imaging of a High Electron Mobility Transistor (HEMT) used as THz detector has been performed. The reflective imaging system developed at the ENEA FEL Facility in Frascati has been used to this purpose. This imaging technique has shown to be particularly powerful in resolving various coupling mechanisms of the incident radiation with the device.     

Addition Reactions of Benzenesulfinic Acid with Glycals and 1,2-Dibromosugars

The addition of benzenesulfinic acid to glycals was investigated under various conditions, and optimized yields of the glycosyl phenylsulfone products were obtained in the presence of tin tetrachloride as a catalyst. Double bond shift (Ferrier rearrangement) occurred in all cases except amicetal, which lacks a substituent at the allylic carbon. Glycosylation of benzenesulfinic acid with 1,2-dibromides was carried out using silver triflate as the promoter, and gave sulfinate esters as products by reaction at oxygen rather than at sulfur. The sulfinate esters were obtained as mixtures of stereoisomers at the stereogenic sulfur atom. Trapping of the sulfinates with carboxylate nucleophiles was observed during attempted oxidation with MCPBA.     

On effects of virtual inertia during diffusion of a dispersed medium in a suspension

Equations of motion of a binary mixture (where virtual inertia effects due to diffusion have relevance) are derived from an Eulerian variational principle. The results are consistent with general axioms of the theory of mixtures.Dedicated to James Serrin on his sixtieth birthday     

Fusion of 60Ni + 100Mo near and below the Coulomb barrier

Various sub-barrier capture reactions with ^16,18O and ^40,48Ca are treated within the quantum diffusion approach. The role of neutron transfer in these capture reactions is discussed. The quasielastic and capture barrier distributions are analyzed and compared with the recent experimental data.     

Quantum transport in low-dimensional AlGaN/GaN systems

In this work, we investigated the magnetotransport properties of a two dimensional electron gas hosted in an AlGaN/AlN/GaN heterostructure and one-dimensional devices fabricated on it. At cryogenic temperature, high mobility and long mean free path is achieved, allowing ballistic transport experiments. Longitudinal resistivity measured in Hall bar geometry shows well-developed Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations with amplitude modulation. Amongst possible mechanisms, the zero-field spin splitting may be the origin of the observed effects. Split gate quantum point contacts were fabricated by electron beam lithography. Linear conductance measurements at zero magnetic field show clear quantized conductance plateaus at 2e ²/h and 4e ²/h. Non-perfectly quantized conductance values are found for higher plateaus, suggesting the presence of impurity scattering.     

Harnessing the ortho‐Directing Ability of the Azetidine Ring for the Regioselective and Exhaustive Functionalization of Arenes

This work demonstrates how the directing ability of the azetidine ring could be useful for regioselective ortho‐C?H functionalization of aryl compounds. Robust polar organometallic (lithiated) intermediates are involved in this synthetic strategy. The reagent n‐hexyllithium emerged as a safer, yet still effective, basic reagent for the hydrogen/lithium permutation relative to the widely used reagent nBuLi. Two different reaction protocols were discovered for regioselective lithiation at the ortho positions adjacent to the azetidine ring, which served as a toolbox when other competing directing groups were installed on the aromatic ring. The coordinating ability of the azetidine nitrogen atom, as well as the involvement of dynamic phenomena related to the preferential conformations of 2‐arylazetidine derivatives, were recognized to be responsible for the observed reactivity and regioselectivity. A site‐selective functionalization of the aromatic ring was achieved for aryl azetidines with either coordinatively competent groups (e.g. methoxy) or inductively electron‐withdrawing substituents (e.g. chlorine and fluorine). By fine‐tuning the reaction conditions, regioselective introduction of several substituents on the aromatic ring could be realized. Several substitution patterns were accomplished, which included 1,2,3‐trisubstitution, 1,2,3,4‐tetrasubstitution, and 1,2,3,4,5‐pentasubstitution, up to the exhaustive substitution of the aromatic ring.     

A Linear Theory of Porous Elastic Solids

The theory of porous elastic solids with large vacuous interstices, considered by Giovine like materials with ellipsoidal structure, includes, as a particular case, the nonlinear theory of Nunziato and Cowin of elastic materials with small spherical voids finely dispersed in the matrix.In this paper we propose appropriate constitutive relations and then specialize the basic balance equations of Giovine to the linear theory. Also, generalizing the developments of Cowin and Nunziato, we formulate boundary-initial-value problems and examine classical applications as responses to homogeneous deformations and small-amplitude acoustic waves.
