The neural correlates of music perception have received relatively little scientific attention. The neural activity of listeners without musical training (N = 11), highly trained musicians (N = 14), and musicians possessing "absolute pitch" (AP) ability (N = 10) have been measured. Major differences were observed in the P3, an endogenous event-related potential (ERP), which is thought to be a neurophysiological manifestation of working memory processing. The P3 was elicited using the classical "oddball" paradigm with a sine-tone series. Subjects' musical backgrounds were evaluated with a survey questionnaire. AP ability was verified with an objective pitch identification test. The P3 amplitude, latency and wave shape were evaluated along with each subjects' performance score and musical background. The AP subjects showed a significantly smaller P3 amplitude than either the musicians or nonmusicians, which were nearly identical. The P3 latency was shortest for the AP subjects, and was longer for the nonmusicians. Performance scores were uniformly high in all three groups. It is concluded that AP subjects do indeed exhibit P3 ERPs, albeit with smaller amplitudes and shorter latencies. The differences in neural activity between the musicians and AP subjects were not due to musical training, as the AP subjects had similar musical backgrounds to the musician group. It is also concluded that persons with the AP ability may have superior auditory sensitivity at cortical levels and/or use unique neuropsychological strategies when processing tones. 相似文献

Background
In learning and memory tasks, requiring visual spatial memory (VSM), males exhibit superior performance to females (a difference attributed to the hormonal influence of estrogen). This study examined the influence of phytoestrogens (estrogen-like plant compounds) on VSM, utilizing radial arm-maze methods to examine varying aspects of memory. Additionally, brain phytoestrogen, calbindin (CALB), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) levels were determined. 相似文献3.

Adaptation of auditory-nerve responses was investigated by applying increments and decrements in intensity to an ongoing tonal background. The change in firing rate produced by a change in intensity was obtained as a function of the time delay from the onset of the background to the onset of the change in intensity. The initial change in firing rate was measured using both small (1 ms) and large (10 ms) time intervals in order to evaluate properties of rapid and short-term adaptation, respectively. Consistent with previous results, the incremental and decremental responses measured with large windows were independent of time delay and the amount of prior adaptation. A similar additivity was observed for the incremental response measured with a small time window. In contrast, the decremental response measured with a small window decreased with increasing time delay and in proportion to the decrease in firing rate produced by the background. A similar decrease was observed in the response modulation produced by sinusoidal amplitude modulation. It was concluded that sensitivity to decrements in intensity decreases during adaptation, so that this response component does not reflect the additivity inherent in other aspects of adaptation. 相似文献

In this paper Jeffery–Hamel flow has been studied and its nonlinear ordinary differential equation has been solved through homotopy analysis method (HAM). The obtained solution in comparison with the numerical ones represents a remarkable accuracy. The results also indicate that HAM can provide us with a convenient way to control and adjust the convergence region. 相似文献

Background
Soy-derived isoflavones potentially protect against obesity and depression. In five different studies we examined the influence of soy-containing diets or equol injections on depression, serotonin levels, body weight gain (BW) and white adipose tissue (WAT) deposition in female Long-Evans rats at various stages of life [rats were intact, ovariectomized or experienced natural ovarian failure (NOF)]. 相似文献8.

This study was designed to clarify whether speech understanding in a fluctuating background is related to temporal processing as measured by the detection of gaps in noise bursts. Fifty adults with normal hearing or mild high-frequency hearing loss served as subjects. Gap detection thresholds were obtained using a three-interval, forced-choice paradigm. A 150-ms noise burst was used as the gap carrier with the gap placed close to carrier onset. A high-frequency masker without a temporal gap was gated on and off with the noise bursts. A continuous white-noise floor was present in the background. Word scores for the subjects were obtained at a presentation level of 55 dB HL in competing babble levels of 50, 55, and 60 dB HL. A repeated measures analysis of covariance of the word scores examined the effects of age, absolute sensitivity, and temporal sensitivity. The results of the analysis indicated that word scores in competing babble decreased significantly with increases in babble level, age, and gap detection thresholds. The effects of absolute sensitivity on word scores in competing babble were not significant. These results suggest that age and temporal processing influence speech understanding in fluctuating backgrounds in adults with normal hearing or mild high-frequency hearing loss. 相似文献

Age and stimulus rise time (RT) effects on response latency were investigated for inferior colliculus (IC) neurons in young-adult and old CBA mice. Single-unit responses were recorded to unmodulated and sinusoidal amplitude modulated (SAM) broadband noise carriers, presented at 35 to 80 dB SPL. Data from 63 young-adult and 76 old phasic units were analyzed to identify the time interval between stimulus onset and driven-response onset (latency). When controlling for stimulus sound level and AM frequency, significant age-related changes in latency were identified. Absolute latency decreased with age at all stimulus AM frequencies, significantly so for equivalent rise times (RT) < or = 12.5 ms. The linear correlation of latency with AM stimulus RT was significant for both young-adult and old units, and increased significantly with age. It is likely that both the decrease in absolute latency and the increase in latency/RT correlation with age are consistent with a reduction of inhibitory drive with age in the IC. These latency changes will result in age-related timing variations in brainstem responses to stimulus onsets, and therefore affect the encoding of complex sounds. 相似文献

The accurate measurement of the thermal conductivity of metals still poses considerable experimental difficulty. The reasons for this, and the main ways in which the problem has been approached, are summarized. A detailed examination of the development in technique and methods of measurement shows that while most of the steady-state methods introduced over 50 years ago are still being improved, the emphasis in the last few years has been on the development of methods which give more rapid results, particularly at high temperatures. 相似文献
