Essential domains and two conjectures in dimension theory

This note investigates two long-standing conjectures on the Krull dimension of integer-valued polynomial rings and of polynomial rings in the context of (locally) essential domains.

     

Induction and foundation in the theory of hereditarily finite sets

The paper contains an axiomatic treatment of the intuitionistic theory of hereditarily finite sets, based on an induction axiom-schema and a finite set of single axioms. The main feature of the principle of induction used (due to Givant and Tarski) is that it incorporates Foundation. On the analogy of what is done in Arithmetic, in the axiomatic system selected the transitive closure of the membership relation is taken as a primitive notion, so as to permit an immediate adaptation of the theory to cases of restricted induction (in particular primitive recursive induction). At the end of the paper several different forms of induction, which play an important role in the development of the theory, are compared. An alternative axiomatization of the theory, which is of intrinsic interest, is also discussed.     

Seed gum ofStryphnodendron barbatiman (barbatimão)

Stryphnodendron barbatiman (barbatimão) is a native tree that is found throughout the “Cerrados,” a region of Central Brazil. Plant seeds, on water extraction, furnished 28 g% galactomannan (dryweight basis), the monosaccharide composition of which (galactose to mannose ratio, 1.0:1.5) fits in the legume heteromannan group. This seed gum, after Sevag deproteinization, still retained 6 g% of associated protein and had a molecular weight of about 1.8 MD on gel filtration. A high intrinsic viscosity (1300 cP) was observed for the polysaccharide sample obtained after reflux of the crushed seeds in 80% aqueous methanol.

     

Determination of thickness, dielectric constant of thiol films, and kinetics of adsorption using surface plasmon resonance

This paper describes the formation of a self-assembled monolayer of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) under different concentrations on a gold sensor disk, monitoring in situ and in real time using surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (SPR). The film thickness and dielectric constant were determined for a fully formed monolayer using one-color approach SPR. The kinetic studies of the film formation in ethanol solution indicated that the self-assembled monolayer is formed in a two-step adsorption process. In this sense, this unpublished route was applied on the basis of a model where many molecules are adsorbed at an initial step and then can be desorbed and/or rearranged to form a perfect monolayer.     

Evidence against the hopping mechanism as an important electron transfer pathway for conformationally constrained oligopeptides

The rate constant of intramolecular electron transfer through oligopeptides based on the alpha-aminoisobutyric acid residue was determined as a function of the peptide length and found to depend weakly on the donor-acceptor separation. By measuring the electron-transfer activation energy and estimating the energy gap between donor and bridge, we were able to discard the electron hopping mechanism.     

Metal derivatives of azoles,part VII. Pyrazolato-bridged dinuclear complexes containing either cyclopalladated or -platinated trimesitylphosphine or -arsine

Summary The halogen bridges of the dimeric, cyclometallated trimesityl-arsine and -phosphine complexes of palladium(II) and platinum(II), where M=Pd or Pt and E=P or As have been replaced with pyrazolate groups to give the corresponding and less symmetric pyrazolato-bridged complexes, where M=Pd or Pt, E=P or As, Pz=pyrazolato anion, and M=Pd, E=As, Pz=3,5-dimethylpyrazolato anion. In the case of the palladium complexes,¹H. n.m.r. clearly indicates the presence of only one isomer which is most likely to have thetrans configuration while the platinum complexes are mixtures of bothcis andtrans forms.Part VI, ref. 3c     

Co60 γ-radiation-induced copolymerization of ethylene and carbon monoxide

The γ-radiation-induced free-radical copolymerization of ethylene and CO has been investigated over a wide range of pressure, initial gas composition, radiation intensity, and temperature. At 20°C., concentrations of CO up to 1% retard the polymerization of ethylene. Above this concentration the rate reaches a maximum between 27.5 and 39.2% CO and then decreases. The copolymer composition increases only from 40 to 50% CO when the gas mixture is varied from 5 to 90% CO. A relatively constant reactivity ratio is obtained at 20°C., indicating that CO adds 23.6 times as fast as an ethylene monomer to an ethylene free-radical chain end. For a 50% CO gas mixture, the above value of 23.6 and the copolymerization rate decrease with increasing temperature to 200°C. The kinetic data indicate a temperature-dependent depropagation reaction. Infrared examination of copolymers indicates a polyketone structure containing ? CH₂? CH₂? and ? CO? units. The crystalline melting point increases rapidly from 111 to 242°C., as the CO concentration in the copolymer increases from 27 to 50%. Molecular weight of copolymer formed at 20°C. increased with increasing CO, indicating M?_n values >20,000. Increasing reaction temperature results in decreasing molecular weight. Onset of decomposition for a 50% CO copolymer was measured at ≈250°C.     

Intramolecular dissociative electron transfer

Dissociative electron transfers (ET) are reactions in which the ET is associated with the cleavage of a sigma bond. Although a rather satisfactory amount of information is currently available on the intermolecular and heterogeneous dissociative ET reactions, less is known for the corresponding intramolecular processes, despite the relevance of these reactions in both chemistry and biochemistry. This tutorial review focuses on the most recent developments in this area, with particular emphasis on the reactions occurring in well-defined Donor-Spacer-Acceptor molecular systems. The goal is to provide the reader with the essential background to understand and possibly predict the feasibility and rates of these reactions, as well as to stimulate the application of the intramolecular dissociative ET concepts and related issues to still unexplored molecular systems.     

Production of octadienal in the marine diatom Skeletonema costatum

[reaction: see text] Marine diatoms produce alpha,beta,gamma,delta-unsaturated aldehydes that have detrimental effects on the reproduction of their natural predators. The production of these defensive metabolites is suggested to involve enzymatic oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. In this paper, feeding experiments with labeled precursor provide clear evidence in support of the origin of octadienals 1 and 2 from 6,9,12-hexadecatrienoic acid (5), thus proving the involvement of novel lipoxygenase/lyase activity for the oxidation of C(16) fatty acids.
