The temperature-dependent luminescence of tris (β-diketone) chelates of europium was used for in situ temperature measurements during cationic photopolymerizations of vinyl ethers. These molecular-level luminescent probes provided a real-time, noninvasive method for monitoring temperature during these high-speed polymerizations. Two specific probes, tris (benzoyl-1, 1, 1-trifluoroacetone) europium and tris (1,1,1,5,5,5,-hexafluoroacetylacetone) europium, met several stringent spectral and performance requirements for application in our system. The luminescence from these probes exhibits a reproducible temperature dependence over a wide temperature range and is not sensitive to changes in viscosity. In situ temperature profiles obtained using this novel technique verified the importance of thermal effects during these highly exothermic photopolymerizations. These studies have demonstrated the utility of the tris(β-diketone) europium chelates for characterizing the temperature during high-speed photopolymerizations that cannot be monitored using conventional techniques. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We have developed an atomic force microscope-tip-based concept to pattern metallic nanoparticles on substrates. This new process has the potential to control the assembly of nanometer sized particles by combining their unique optical and thermophysical properties and is a flexible and low energy method of patterning at the nanoscale. The proof of concept is detailed by preliminary experimental work showing selective melting and evaporation of groups of 50 and 100 nm gold spherical particles.  相似文献

Tobacco plants can be used for the production of proteins for pharmaceutical applications. One of the most difficult and expensive tasks associated with this technology is isolating the product of interest from the hundreds of other chemicals found in tobacco. We describe a new recovery strategy in which the protein of interest is “tagged” with a histidine structure, which forms a complex with metal ions and a surfactant that will accumulate in the foamate of a foam fractionation step. His-gus, a histidine-tagged enzyme, was selectively recovered in the presence of two different surfactants and two different metal ions. The foam fractionation with N-∈-dodecylamido-N-α, N-α,-bis(carboxymethyl)-l-lysine surfactant and Ni2+ ions resulted in an average His-gus activity recovery value of 88% and an activity enrichment of 2.27. The performance of the recovery strategy without tobacco extract resulted in an average activity recovery value of 63.32% and an average activity enrichment value of 5.16, utilizing lauroylethylenediaminetriacetate surfactant and Ni2+ ions. It was shown that even though a majority of the native tobacco proteins are removed during the prefoaming step, the presence of tobacco extract does affect the recovery of His-gus.  相似文献

A Monte Carlo ray tracing scheme is used to investigate the propagation of an incident collimated beam of polarized light in liquid foams. Cellular structures like foam are expected to change the polarization characteristics due to multiple scattering events, where such changes can be used to monitor foam dynamics. A statistical model utilizing some of the recent developments in foam physics is coupled with a vector Monte Carlo scheme to compute the depolarization ratios via Stokes-Mueller formalism. For the simulations, the incident Stokes vector corresponding to horizontal linear polarization and right circular polarization are considered. It is observed that bubble size and the polydispersity parameter have a significant effect on the depolarization ratios. This is partially owing to the number of total internal reflection events in the Plateau borders. The results are discussed in terms of applicability of polarized light as a diagnostic tool for monitoring foams.  相似文献
