Rearrangement of spiro-benzimidazolines: preparation of N-alkenyl- and N-alkyl-benzimidazol-2-ones

A synthetically useful protocol has been developed for the preparation of highly functionalized N-alkenyl-benzimidazol-2-ones. Reaction of commercially available o-phenylenediamines with variously substituted cyclic ketones provides spiro-benzimidazolines. Treatment of these spiro-benzimidazolines with triphosgene in the presence of potassium carbonate results in rapid rearrangement and formation of N-alkenyl-benzimidazol-2-ones in modest to excellent yield for the two-step sequence. Extension of this methodology toward the preparation of a μ opiate receptor antagonist and droperidol, a potent antiemetic and antipsychotic agent, currently a marketed pharmaceutical is also described. Upon treatment of spiro-benzimidazolines with triphosgene in the presence of sodium triacetoxyborohydride, N-alkyl-benzimidazol-2-ones were formed.     

Indecomposable continua and the Julia sets of polynomials, II

We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the connected Julia set of a polynomial of degree d?2 to be an indecomposable continuum. One necessary and sufficient condition is that the impression of some prime end (external ray) of the unbounded complementary domain of the Julia set J has nonempty interior in J. Another is that every prime end has as its impression the entire Julia set. The latter answers a question posed in 1993 by the second two authors.We show by example that, contrary to the case for a polynomial Julia set, the image of an indecomposable subcontinuum of the Julia set of a rational function need not be indecomposable.     

The hadronic cross section of electron-positron annihilation at 9.5 GeV and the ϒ and ϒ′ resonance parameters

The reaction e⁺e^?→ hadrons has been measured in the ? and ?′ region using the DASP detector at the DESY storage ring DORIS. The following final results are obtained: R_had(9.5 GeV)=3.73±0.16±0.28, Γ_ee(?)=(1.23 ± 0.08 ± 0.12) keV, B_μμ(?)=(3.2±1.3±0.3)%, $\text{Γ}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>ee</mtext>}}\text{Γ}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>had</mtext>}}\text{Γ}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>tot</mtext>}}\text{(?′)=(0.55±0.11 ±0.06)}\text{keV}$, and M(?′)?M(?)=(556 ±10) MeV.     

Cochannel speech separation

The multisignal minimum-cross-entropy spectral analysis (multisignal MCESA) is applied to the problem of separating the speech signals of two talkers speaking simultaneously on a single channel, e.g., when two talkers use a single microphone. A new two-stage approach to the problem is proposed in which a spectral separator is followed by a spectral tailoring procedure. The spectral separator produces an initial estimate of the speech spectrum for each talker. Then the spectral tailoring procedure employs the multisignal MCESA technique to adjust the initial spectral estimates to account for the characteristics of the known cochannel composite speech signal. The research emphasis is placed on the implementation and evaluation of the spectral tailoring procedure, i.e., the use of the multisignal MCESA in the proposed scheme. Its usefulness is evaluated and validated by listening tests and by comparing the spectral distortions of the estimated voices before and after the multisignal MCESA processing.
