Synthesis of carba analogs of 6-O-(benzyl)-d-allal- and -d-galactal-derived allyl epoxides and evaluation of the regio- and stereoselective behavior in nucleophilic addition reactions

The new racemic diastereoisomeric epoxides 6α and 6β, the carba analogs of the corresponding d-galactal- and d-allal-derived allyl epoxides have been synthesized and their regio- and stereoselective behavior examined in addition reactions with model O-, C-, N-, and S-nucleophiles. The results have indicated that epoxide 6β has a pronounced tendency toward anti-1,2-addition, whereas epoxide 6α shows interesting levels of syn- and/or anti-1,4-addition processes. A chiral recognition process found with epoxide 6β, turned out to be consistently reduced in epoxide 6α. All the results have been rationalized on the basis of conformational, steric, and stereoelectronic effects.

Potent integrin antagonists from a small library of RGD-including cyclic pseudopeptides

A small library of cyclic RGD pseudopentapeptides incorporating stereoisomeric 6,5- and 7,5-fused bicyclic lactams was synthesized with the aim of developing active and selective integrin antagonists. The solid-phase synthesis and activity of these RGD derivatives is described. The approach led to two of the most active known inhibitors of alpha(V)beta3 receptor.     

Observation of scaling deviations in the energy distribution of secondary hadrons in inelastic neutrino-proton interactions

An analysis is presented of the z distributions of secondary hadrons produced in 5600 charged current events from a BEBC neutrino-hydrogen experiment. Evidence is presented for scaling deviations in the z distributions and a breakdown of factorization in the single particle inclusive cross sections. The results are consistent with the leading order QCD predictions on the q² dependence of nonsinglet moments of quark fragmentation functions, yielding a value of Λ ≈ 0.6 GeV.     

Stereoselective synthesis of 2,3-unsaturated 1,6-oligosaccharides by means of a glycal-derived allyl epoxide and N-nosyl aziridine

beta-D-threo- and 4-deoxy-4-amino-alpha-D-erythro-hex-2-enopyranosyl di- (n = 0) and trisaccharides (n = 1) of types A and B were synthetized by means of a reiterative, completely stereoselective glycosylation process which makes use of the D-galactal-derived allyl epoxide 1beta and D-allal-derived allyl N-nosyl aziridine 2alpha, respectively.
