Images of the surface ordering of 4-n-octyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl, a room temperature smectic liquid crystal deposited upon graphite, have been obtained by scanning tunnelling microscopy. The microscope was operated in air using the constant-current mode. Under certain tunnelling conditions it has been possible to resolve both the aliphatic and aromatic parts of the molecule, and to observe individual benzene rings. Two previously unreported conformations have been observed: an overlapping bilayer structure with spacing 3.7 nm, and a monolayer structure with spacing 2.4 nm. The latter structure may represent the first visual evidence for a surface polar ordered structure.  相似文献

Values of pa H o for 0.05 mole-kg?1 aqueous solutions of sodium hydrogen diglycolate in the temperature range 5–65°C have been obtained from cells without transport, and can be fitted to the equation $$\begin{gathered} pa^\circ _H = 3.5098 + 2.222 \times 10^{ - 3} ({T \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {T {K - 298.15}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {K - 298.15}}) \hfill \\ + 2.628 \times 10^{ - 5} ({T \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {T {K - 298.15}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {K - 298.15}})^2 \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ The analysis has been carried out by a multilinear regression procedure using a form of the Clarke and Glew equation. This buffer standard may be a useful alternative to the saturated potassium hydrogen tartrate buffer.  相似文献

Syntheses of cis-[PtCl(CH2COCH3)(PEt3)2], cis-[PtCl(CH2NO2) (PEt3)2], and trans-[Pt(CCPh)2 (PEt3)2] are described. The procedure involves reaction of cis-[PtCl2(PEt3)2] with Ag2O and acidic CH bonds to precipitate AgC1 and generate a PtC bond. A liquid crystal, BL038, which was observed not to crystallize, has a glass transition at 215 K and a nematic to isotropic transition at 380 K. Samples aged below the glass transition at various temperatures T a, exhibited an endotherm at the transition which developed with extent of ageing time, t a. We attribute this endotherm to the relaxation of the glass towards the equilibrium liquid. The progress of the relaxation process was measured using differential scanning calorimetry. On subsequent reheating, the aged glass showed an apparent shift in the glass transition to higher temperatures. The endotherm was used to define the extent of enthalpic relaxation and the maximum value observed was found to increase initially then decrease, with the extent of undercooling from the glass transition temperature, Δ T, passing through a maximum for a Δ T = 15 K. From the temperature dependence of the relaxation times, an apparent activation enthalpy for the relaxation process of 85 ± 10 kJ mol-1 was determined. The small value of the activation enthalpy compared with that found in the ageing of polymers reflects differences in the molecular species involved in relaxation processes.  相似文献

Characterization of the Earth's surface is crucial to remote sensing, both to map geomorphological features and because subtracting this signal is essential during retrievals of the atmospheric constituents located between the surface and the sensor. Current operational algorithms model the surface total reflectance through a weighted linear combination of a few geometry-dependent kernels, each devised to describe a particular scattering mechanism. The information content of these measurements is overwhelmed by that of instruments with polarization capabilities: proposed models in this case are based on the Fresnel reflectance of an isotropic distribution of facets. Because of its remarkable lack of spectral contrast, the polarized reflectance of land surfaces in the shortwave infrared spectral region, where atmospheric scattering is minimal, can be used to model the surface also at shorter wavelengths, where aerosol retrievals are attempted based on well-established scattering theories.In radiative transfer simulations, straightforward separation of the surface and atmospheric contributions is not possible without approximations because of the coupling introduced by multiple reflections. Within a general inversion framework, the problem can be eliminated by linearizing the radiative transfer calculation, and making the Jacobian (i.e., the derivative expressing the sensitivity of the reflectance with respect to model parameters) available at output. We present a general methodology based on a Gauss–Newton iterative search, which automates this procedure and eliminates de facto the need of an ad hoc atmospheric correction.In this case study we analyze the color variations in the polarized reflectance measured by the NASA Goddard Institute of Space Studies Research Scanning Polarimeter during a survey of late-season snowfields in the High Sierra. This insofar unique dataset presents challenges linked to the rugged topography associated with the alpine environment and a likely high water content due to melting. The analysis benefits from ancillary information provided by the NASA Langley High Spectral Resolution Lidar deployed on the same aircraft.The results obtained from the iterative scheme are contrasted against the surface polarized reflectance obtained ignoring multiple reflections, via the simplistic subtraction of the atmospheric scattering contribution. Finally, the retrieved reflectance is modeled after the scattering properties of a dense collection of ice crystals at the surface. Confirming that the polarized reflectance of snow is spectrally flat would allow to extend the techniques already in use for polarimetric retrievals of aerosol properties over land to the large portion of snow-covered pixels plaguing orbital and suborbital observations.  相似文献

The nominal Global Aerosol Climatology Project (GACP) record of aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and Ångström exponent (AE) over the oceans is extended by 6 months to cover the period from August 1981 through December 2005. The most recent 4-year segment reveals no significant short-term tendencies in globally and hemispherically averaged AOTs and AEs. This finding is consistent with contemporaneous MODIS and MISR results and the accumulating evidence of a gradual transition from global brightening to global dimming. We also analyze the retrieval implications of allowing the imaginary part of the aerosols refractive index Im(m) to change over the duration of the GACP record. Our sensitivity study shows that increasing Im(m) from 0.003 during the 4-year pre-Pinatubo period up to 0.007 during the most recent 4-year segment of GACP data eliminates the previously identified long-term decreasing AOT trend. Should this long-term trend in Im(m) be real then it would cause the global absorption AOT over the oceans to more than double and the global single-scattering albedo to decrease from ~0.95 to ~0.88. Such changes could make tropospheric aerosols significant contributors to the recent surface temperature increase.  相似文献

Reaction between cysteamine (systematic name: 2‐aminoethanethiol, C2H7NS) and L‐(+)‐tartaric acid [systematic name: (2R,3R)‐2,3‐dihydroxybutanedioic acid, C4H6O6] results in a mixture of cysteamine tartrate(1−) monohydrate, C2H8NS+·C4H5O6·H2O, (I), and cystamine bis[tartrate(1−)] dihydrate, C4H14N2S22+·2C4H5O6·2H2O, (III). Cystamine [systematic name: 2,2′‐dithiobis(ethylamine), C4H12N2S2], reacts with L‐(+)‐tartaric acid to produce a mixture of cystamine tartrate(2−), C4H14N2S22+·C4H4O62−, (II), and (III). In each crystal structure, the anions are linked by O—H...O hydrogen bonds that run parallel to the a axis. In addition, hydrogen bonding involving protonated amino groups in all three salts, and water molecules in (I) and (III), leads to extensive three‐dimensional hydrogen‐bonding networks. All three salts crystallize in the orthorhombic space group P212121.  相似文献

The addition of 1 wt% Pd, Au, Ni and Cu dopants has been demonstrated to strongly alter the morphology of beta-phase molybdenum nitride prepared by treatment of MoO3 with a 3/1 H2/N2 mixture at 750 °C. Furthermore, the addition of Pd significantly enhances the surface area and the formation of the nitride phase. It is proposed that the facile formation of molybdenum bronzes in this system is important in this respect. The dopants have also been observed to modify the denitridation characteristics of the beta-phase, with an overall reduction of the proportion of NH3 formed upon using a 3/1 H2/Ar mixture with respect to the undoped sample.  相似文献
