Charged Black Holes and Multidimensional Gravity

A multidimensional generalization of the Reissner-Nordström solution of general relativity is obtained for the case of n Ricci-flat internal spaces. A two-parameter family of black-hole solutions for an arbitrary dimensionality D is selected. Nontrivial black holes with D > 4 are shown to exist only with a nonzero electric charge. Observational consequences are discussed, in particular, a violation of Coulomb's law.     

Cylindrical solitons in a Gödel Universe and their stability

Exact cylindrically symmetric solutions are obtained for a class of interacting scalar and vector fields in a rotating Godel Universe. We select those with the properties of solitons with smooth decrease of the fields to asymptotics and those with sharp boundaries (droplets). It is shown that only some of the droplets are stable with respect to perturbations that preserve cylindrical symmetry.Translated from Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 5, pp. 24–27, May, 1991.     

Evolution of Statistical Ensembles of Microdomains on the Surface of Films of Rigid-Chain Polyimide during Thermal Imidization

Statistical ensembles of microdomains formed on the surface of polyimide films based on pyromellitic dianhydride and 2,7-diaminofluorene during thermal imidization were described in terms of the model of reversible aggregation using the electron-microscopic data. Parameters of the statistical distribution were determined for each ensemble depending on the film heating temperature.     

Properties of Some Chitosan-containing Blends and Films Therefrom

Mixed solutions of chitosan and polymers with different chain rigidities (polyvinyl alcohol and methyl cellulose) in 2% acetic acid, at various component ratios, were studied viscometrically. The compatibility of the components in solutions and in the solid phase was assessed, and the mechanical characteristics of films prepared from these blends were determined.     

DETECTION OF DNA-PSORALEN PHOTOADDUCTS in situ

Abstract— An immunological method, with the use of specific immune serum, has been developed for detection of 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) photoadducts to DNA, formed in situ in cell nuclei, after combined treatment with 8MOP and UV-A irradiation (Zarçbska et al. , 1978). Lymphocytes fixed on slides or in suspension, and cryostat sections of different mammalian tissues, served as antigenic substrate, after treatment with 8-MOP and UV-A in vitro. Specific fluorescence in these substrates was detected in the nuclei after treatment with 30 ˜ 140 kJ/m² UV-A in the presence of 0.1-0.3 μg/cm² 8-MOP. PHA-stimulated-lymphocytes appeared to be the most sensitive substrate.
However, hairless mice treated with high doses of UV-A in vivo , 70 ˜ 360 kJ/m² did not reveal a specific fluorescence of epidermal nuclei, unless a high local concentration of 8-MOP was attained.
The apparent discrepancy in the level of photoadduct detection between the in vitro and in vivo treated specimens was explained by the low number of DNA-8-MOP-photoadducts formed in vivo under these experimental conditions. The relevance of these findings to the role of DNA-8-MOP-photoadducts formed during PUVA photochemotherapy is discussed.     

Dielectric properties of liquid-crystal azomethine polymer with a side alkyl-substituted chain,doped with fullerene C<Subscript>60</Subscript>

We studied the actual and imaginary components of the dielectric constant of liquid-crystal azomethine polymer with a side chain, doped with 0.5 wt % of fullerene C₆₀, over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies; measurements were made by means of dielectric spectroscopy. By analyzing the frequency dependence of the dielectric constant, we detected the relaxation processes (α, β₁, and β₂) in the nanocomposite, corresponding to certain modes of molecular motion and described them by the Arrhenius equations (β₁- and β₂-processes) and the Vogel–Fulcher–Tamman equation (α-process). An antiplasticization effect is discovered after doping the polymer with fullerene C₆₀, which manifests itself in increasing the glass transition temperature of the nanocomposite compared to this parameter typical of pure polymer.     

The Kinetics of Nematic Phase Separation on Cooling the Isotropic Phase of Mesogenic Siloxane-Azomethine Polyether

The kinetics of nematic phase droplet growth as an isotropic melt of mesogenic siloxane-azomethine polyether was cooled was studied by polarizing microscopy. The results were processed statistically and described using the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. An analysis of the time dependences of statistical distribution parameters revealed the occurrence of two regimes of phase separation, (1) the formation of droplets and their growth and (2) coalescence of droplets. Both regimes were quantitatively described by the universal law of the growth of clusters.
