Nanostructured Ion-Selective MCM-48 Membranes

Templated MCM-48 silica was prepared using CTAB as surfactant. The MCM-48 powders and thin films were characterized by different techniques. MCM-48 layers were deposited on macroporous α-alumina supports and silicon nitride microsieves. The water permeability of MCM-48 was compared with the permeability of conventional mesoporous γ-alumina membranes. The applicability of MCM-48 as ion-selective electric field-driven switchable interconnect for microfluidic devices was demonstrated.     

Charge-changing cross sections of the neutron-rich isotopes8,9,11Li

Total charge-changing cross sections have been measured for⁸Li on C and Pb targets, for⁹Li on C, Al, Cu, Sn and Pb targets, as well as for¹¹Li on C, Sn and Pb targets at about 80 MeV/nucleon. These data are compared to measured total reaction cross sections and Glauber-type calculations using Hartree-Fock density distributions. These comparisons allow to draw conclusions on the proton density distribution of the neutronrich lithium isotopes. The results show that even for the most exotic nucleus¹¹Li the proton distribution is only very weakly influenced by the long tail in the neutron density distribution already established in several experiments.     

Complete structure determination of the astrophysically important nucleus Na below the proton threshold

The fusion–evaporation reaction ¹⁰B(¹²C, 2n) was used to make the first observation of in-beam γ decays from the astrophysically important nucleus ²⁰Na, lying adjacent to the proton drip-line. All states below the proton threshold in ²⁰Na were populated and identified in the experiment. These include new levels, previously unresolved levels, and states located with improved energy precision. The level structure of ²⁰Na, and its γ transitions, are compared to the mirror partner ²⁰F measured simultaneously in this experiment. In particular, a high degree of energy stability is found for all negative parity states. These results are discussed in the context of the nuclear shell model.

On the tensor product of supersingleton representations ofosp(1, 2n)

The tensor product of two supersingleton representations _n of the Lie superalgebraosp (1, 2n) is studied forn2. The main results are as follows: (a) anticommutators and commutators of the odd generators in _{n n} form a skew-symmetric representation of the Lie algebrau(n, n); (b) simple explicit form of all irreducible components of _{n n}, which are labelled by a single parameterJ=0, 1, ..., has been found. Each of them is a^*-representation ofosp (1, 2n) for which assertion (a) is valid. The dimension of its vacuum subspace equals , i.e., the nondegenerate vacuum occurs for J=0 only. Basic property of this family of irreducible^*-representations of osp(1, 2n) are analogous to those of massless representations of osp(1, 4).Dedicated to Academician Václav Votruba on the occasion of his eightieth birthday.

Membrane ion-exchange chromatography for process-scale antibody purification

Microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) was evaluated as a screening tool for the indirect measurement of octanol–water partition coefficients (log P_o/w) of pesticide compounds. Over 80 pesticide compounds representing a variety of structural characteristics were studied, and good correlation of log P_o/w with the logarithm of the retention factor was found. The microemulsion system studied allowed the separation of compounds in the log P_o/w range of −1 to 7. In addition, a smaller set of simple organic molecules that vary in structural features was evaluated and compared to the pesticide log P_o/w calibration. The pesticide and simple organic molecule log P_o/w calibration lines were statistically similar. This suggests that a universal set of standard compounds may be employed for the log P_o/w calibration to provide measurements for a variety of compounds with good accuracy.     

Three-photon near-threshold photoionization dynamics of isooctane

The electron survival probability following three-photon (9.3 eV total) near-threshold photoionization of neat isooctane is measured with sub-50 fs time resolution. The measured dynamics are nonexponential in time and are well described by a diffusion-controlled electron-cation recombination model. Excitation-power-dependent studies indicate that the unperturbed three-photon threshold ionization is only observed for pump irradiance below 0.5 TW cm2. At excitation fields above this level, the signal is no longer cubic in the excitation irradiance, and the observed electron survival probability dramatically changes, decaying as a single exponential in time.
