Displacement affinity chromatography of protein phosphatase one (PP1) complexes

Background  

Protein phosphatase one (PP1) is a ubiquitously expressed, highly conserved protein phosphatase that dephosphorylates target protein serine and threonine residues. PP1 is localized to its site of action by interacting with targeting or regulatory proteins, a majority of which contains a primary docking site referred to as the RVXF/W motif.     

Chemo- and regioselective cyclohydrocarbonylation of alpha-keto alkynes catalyzed by a zwitterionic rhodium complex and triphenyl phosphite

alpha-Keto alkynes react with CO and H(2) in the presence of catalytic quantities of the zwitterionic rhodium complex (eta(6)-C(6)H(5)BPh(3))(-)Rh(+)(1,5-COD) and triphenyl phosphite affording either the 2-, 2(3H)-, or 2(5H)-furanones in 61-93% yields. The cyclohydrocarbonylation is readily accomplished using substrates containing alkyl, aryl, vinyl, and alkoxy groups at the acetylenic terminal, as well as a variety of primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl, aryl, and heteroaryl groups connected to the ketone functionality. Structural and electronic properties present in the starting materials mediate the chemo- and regioselectivity of the reaction.     

Passive electrostatic recycling spectrometer of desk-top size for charged particles of low kinetic energy

A passive electrostatic recycling spectrometer for charged particles is described and demonstrated to store electrons with typical kinetic energies of tens of eV. The design of the charged particle optics and the basic operating characteristics of the storage ring are discussed. The storage lifetime achieved is approximately 50 micros, which is target gas pressure limited and corresponds to approximately 200 orbits of the 0.65 m orbital circumference. The storage ring also has controllable energy dispersive elements enabling it to operate as a spectroscopic device.     

OPTIMAL FOREST STAND MANAGEMENT WHEN BENEFITS ARE DERIVED FROM CARBON

The management of second-growth and old-growth forest stands has important implications for the global carbon cycle. This paper considers the optimal forest rotation when flows of CO₂ to carbon have positive value. If benefits are derived only from carbon, then typically it will never be optimal to harvest any forest stands. This result is a formalization and extension of Harmon et al. [1990]. Private forest owners will often maximize net returns to timber, ignoring benefits from carbon sequestration. Thus, the privately and socially optimal rotations will not generally coincide. We show that the socially optimal rotation is always greater than the privately optimal rotation and less than or equal to the rotation when only carbon is valued.     

Angular momentum partitioning and hexacontatetrapole moments in impulsively excited argon ions

We have studied polarized electron collisions with Ar in which the target is simultaneously ionized and excited to form Ar+(3p(4)(1D)4p) states. We measured the integrated Stokes parameters of the subsequent fluorescence emitted by the (2)F(7/2), (2)F(5/2), (2)D(5/2), and (2)P(3/2) states along the direction of electron polarization. The Rubin-Bederson hypothesis is shown to hold for the L and S multipoles of these states. The electric quadrupole and hexadecapole of the 1D core are derived. By recoupling these moments with the electric quadrupole moment of the 4p electron, we calculate higher moments of the total ionic orbital angular momentum, including its hexacontatetrapole (64-pole) moment.
