Creating, detecting and locating ultracold molecules in a surface trap

Ultracold molecules have been produced by photoassociation of Cs atoms trapped in a mirror magneto-optical trap. The molecules were detected by resonantly enhanced multi-photon ionization followed by time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. The time-of-flight ofatomic and molecular ions was investigated in the presence of a dc bias voltageapplied to the conducting mirror. This technique provides a new tool for determining the distance between the cold molecules and the mirror surface. A Stereoselective Synthesis of (±) Exobrevicomin; Synthetic Applications of Gamma-Alkoxy Allylboronates

A synthesis of the naturally occurring bicyclic acetal, “exobrevicomin” is described. The requisite threo stereochemistry of keto diol precursors is obtained selectively by condensation of a gamma-alkoxy allylboronate with an appropriate aldehyde.     

Observation of ultraslow light propagation in a ruby crystal at room temperature

We have observed slow light propagation with a group velocity as low as 57.5+/-0.5 m/s at room temperature in a ruby crystal. A quantum coherence effect, coherent population oscillations, produces a very narrow spectral "hole" in the homogeneously broadened absorption profile of ruby. The resulting rapid spectral variation of the refractive index leads to a large value of the group index. We observe slow light propagation both for Gaussian-shaped light pulses and for amplitude modulated optical beams in a system that is much simpler than those previously used for generating slow light.     

Two new eudesmane derivatives from Verbesina virginica

<正>Two new eudesmane derivatives were isolated from the leaves and flowers of Verbesina virginica,along with the known 6-O-β-E -p-coumaroyl-4α-hydroxyeudesmane(1).Their structures were determined as 6-O-β-Z-p-coumaroyl-4α-hydroxyeudesmane(2) and 6-O-α-E-p-coumaroyl-1β-4α-dihydroxyeudesmane(3) by spectroscopic methods.     

Photoassociation studies of ultracold NaCs from the Cs 6(2)P(3/2) asymptote

A combination of pulsed depletion spectroscopy and photoassociation spectroscopy is utilized to assign photoassociation spectra of NaCs. These methods investigate the ab initio Ω = 2 potential energy curve and indicate a previously unknown avoided crossing between the (3)Ω = 1 and (4)Ω = 1 electronic states. We present rotational assignments of deeply bound singlet ground state molecules, an improved C(6) coefficient for the (4)Ω = 1 and assignments for all twenty-three photoassociation resonances detuned from the Cs 6(2)P(3/2) asymptote.     

Effect of Pr-Ca substitution on the transport and magnetic behavior of LaMnO3 perovskite

The effect of simultaneous substitution of a fluctuating cation and a divalent cation in LaMnO₃ perovskite modifies the properties of the material to exhibit large valence colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effect. A good example of these properties is (La_1−2x Pr _x Ca _x )MnO₃ (LPCMO) type CMR material. In this communication it is reported that, with the increase in x (for x=0.1, 0.15, 0.2), the T _c varies between 100 and 120 K with improvisation in metal-insulator transition. Interestingly, resistance increases with x from few hundred ohms to few kilo ohms with corresponding decrease in the unit cell volume. The results of the studies using X-ray diffraction (XRD), electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance and ac susceptibility measurements on LPCMO samples for understanding the structural, transport and magnetic properties are discussed in detail.
