Mass spectrometric investigation of the side-arm lariat effect of ortho- and para-methoxyphenoxymethyl-15-crown-5 in the gas phase

Mixtures of unsubstituted 15-crown-5 and its analogues containing ortho- and para-methoxyphenoxymethyl substituents with sodium salts were investigated by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry. Peaks of cationized molecules [M+Na]⁺ and cluster ions [2M+2Na+An]⁺, where M is the crown ether molecule and An is monobasic acid anion, were observed in the mass spectra. It was shown that an increase of the shielding degree of the sodium cation in complexes with crown ethers, i.e., the lariat effect, led to a significant decrease in the intensity of peaks of the cluster ions.     

Synthesis and fluorescent properties of thiacalix[4]arenes containing terpyridyl fragments at the lower rim

New thiacalix[4]arenes tetrasubstituted by terpyridyl fragments at the lower rims in the 1,3-alternate stereoisomeric form were synthesized. The molecules interact with Eu^III and Tb^III in the DMF solution to form highly luminescent nanoscale (21–26 nm) metal-organic structures with the 2: 1 metal-to-ligand stoichiometry and a narrow particle size distribution.     

Thermodynamics of mixed-ligand complex formation of copper(II) ethylenediaminetetraacetate with amino acids in solution

The mixed-ligand complex formation in the systems Cu²⁺–Edta^4?–L (L = His, Lys, Orn, Arg, Im) has been calorimetrically, pH-potentiometrically, and spectrophotometrically studied in aqueous solution at 298.15 K and the ionic strength of I = 0.5 (KNO₃). The thermodynamic parameters of formation of the CuEdtaL, CuEdtaHL, and (CuEdta)₂L complexes have been determined. The probable coordination mode for the complexone and the ancillary ligand in the mixed-ligand complexes was discussed.

Liquid extraction of some rare earth elements with aminomethylphosphine oxides

Methods were developed of the solvent extraction from aqueous solutions of hydrochloric, nitric, and perchloric acids of the triply charged ions of rare earth elements including samarium, lutetium, dysprosium, neodymium, and ytterbium, using as reagents the lipophilic aminomethylphosphine oxides containing two or four dialkylphosphinyl groups, and toluene, chloroform, and methylene chloride as the organic media. The study of the effect of concentration of mineral acids on the degree of metal extraction showed that the highest extraction efficiency of lanthanides is achieved with bis(dihexylphosphinylmethyl)octylamine (I) from perchloric media: extraction degree 80%, whereas extraction from the solutions in two other acids did not exceed 30%. It was shown that the highest selectivity was reached at the extraction of scandium in all the extraction systems. A possible mechanism of extraction is discussed.     

Thiacalix[4]monocrowns with terpyridine functional groups as new structural units for luminescent polynuclear lanthanide complexes

Abstract

The synthesis and structure of thiacalix[4]monocrowns in 1,3-alternate configuration substituted by terpyridyl fragments on the lower rim are being discussed. It has been shown that the number of oxyethylene units in oligoethylene glycol chain affects the distribution of the yields of the cross-linking products leading to either thiacalix[4]monocrowns or bisthiacalix[4]arenes. Their complexation ability towards alkali metal and lanthanide ions has been studied using liquid extraction and MALDI TOF MS, in addition to luminescent properties of ligands and their lanthanide complexes. The NMR titration data discovered the participation of both crown ether and terpyridyl fragment in the coordination of lanthanide cations. The fluorescent titration showed the nonlinear emission response to the amount of lanthanide ions.     

Transformations of anilides of 3-aryl-2,3-epoxypropionic acids when exposed to acidic agents

Anilides of 3-aryl-2,3-epoxypropionic acids on treatment with aqueous HBr gave 3-aryl-3-bromo-2-hydroxypropionic acid anilides and (in some cases) 2-bromo-3-hydroxy regioisomers. Cyclization of these products into 3-arylquinolin-2(1H)-ones was studied.     

Reduction of 4,4'-Dinitrostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic Acid with Hydrogen on Raney Nickel

Reduction of 4,4'-dinitrostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid with hydrogen in aqueous solution on Raney nickel yields a trisazo compound identical to Direct Yellow K dye.
