Modulation thresholds were measured in three subjects for a sinusoidally amplitude-modulated (SAM) wideband noise (the signal) in the presence of a second amplitude-modulated wideband noise (the masker). In monaural conditions (Mm-Sm) masker and signal were presented to only one ear; in binaural conditions (M0-S pi) the masker was presented diotically while the phase of modulation of the SAM noise signal was inverted in one ear relative to the other. In experiment 1 masker modulation frequency (fm) was fixed at 16 Hz, and signal modulation frequency (fs) was varied from 2-512 Hz. For monaural presentation, masking generally decreased as fs diverged from fm, although there was a secondary increase in masking for very low signal modulation frequencies, as reported previously [Bacon and Grantham, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 85, 2575-2580 (1989)]. The binaural masking patterns did not show this low-frequency upturn: binaural thresholds continued to improve as fs decreased from 16 to 2 Hz. Thus, comparing masked monaural and masked binaural thresholds, there was an average binaural advantage, or masking-level difference (MLD) of 9.4 dB at fs = 2 Hz and 5.3 dB at fs = 4 Hz. In addition, there were positive MLDs for the on-frequency condition (fm = fs = 16 Hz: average MLD = 4.4 dB) and for the highest signal frequency tested (fs = 512 Hz: average MLD = 7.3 dB). In experiment 2 the signal was a SAM noise (fs = 16 Hz), and the masker was a wideband noise, amplitude-modulated by a narrow band of noise centered at fs. There was no effect on monaural or binaural thresholds as masker modulator bandwidth was varied from 4 to 20 Hz (the average MLD remained constant at 8.0 dB), which suggests that the observed "tuning" for modulation may be based on temporal pattern discrimination and not on a critical-band-like filtering mechanism. In a final condition the masker modulator was a 10-Hz-wide band of noise centered at the 64-Hz signal modulation frequency. The average MLD in this case was 7.4 dB. The results are discussed in terms of various binaural capacities that probably play a role in binaural release from modulation masking, including detection of varying interaural intensity differences (IIDs) and discrimination of interaural correlation. 相似文献

We present results of searches for technirho (rho(T)), techniomega (omega(T)), and Z' particles, using the decay channels rho(T),omega(T),Z'-->e(+)e(-). The search is based on 124.8 pb(-1) of data collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992-1996. In the absence of a signal, we set 95% C.L. upper limits on the cross sections for the processes pp-->rho(T),omega(T),Z'-->e(+)e(-) as a function of the mass of the decaying particle. For certain model parameters, we exclude the existence of degenerate rho(T) and omega(T) states with masses below about 200 GeV. We exclude a Z' with mass below 670 GeV, assuming that it has the same couplings to fermions as the Z boson. 相似文献

The relative importance of temporal information in broad spectral regions for consonant identification was assessed in normal-hearing listeners. For the purpose of forcing listeners to use primarily temporal-envelope cues, speech sounds were spectrally degraded using four-noise-band vocoder processing Frequency-weighting functions were determined using two methods. The first method consisted of measuring the intelligibility of speech with a hole in the spectrum either in quiet or in noise. The second method consisted of correlating performance with the randomly and independently varied signal-to-noise ratio within each band. Results demonstrated that all bands contributed equally to consonant identification when presented in quiet. In noise, however, both methods indicated that listeners consistently placed relatively more weight upon the highest frequency band. It is proposed that the explanation for the difference in results between quiet and noise relates to the shape of the modulation spectra in adjacent frequency bands. Overall, the results suggest that normal-hearing listeners use a common listening strategy in a given condition. However, this strategy may be influenced by the competing sounds, and thus may vary according to the context. Some implications of the results for cochlear implantees and hearing-impaired listeners are discussed. 相似文献

What is the communication cost of simulating the correlations produced by quantum theory? We generalize Bell inequalities to the setting of local realistic theories augmented by a fixed amount of classical communication. Suppose two parties choose one of M two-outcome measurements and exchange 1 bit of information. We present the complete set of inequalities for M=2, and the complete set of inequalities for the joint correlation observable for M=3. We find that correlations produced by quantum theory satisfy both of these sets of inequalities. One bit of communication is therefore sufficient to simulate quantum correlations in both of these scenarios. 相似文献

Overshoot is defined as the decrease in threshold as a brief signal is moved from the beginning to near the temporal center of a longer duration, broadband noise masker. Overshoot can be reduced when another noise (a precursor) is presented just prior to the masker. The purpose of the present investigation was to follow up on a recent psychophysical study which showed that overshoot could be reduced by a precursor presented to the ear contralateral to that receiving the masker and signal. The signal was a 20-ms, 4000-Hz tone that was presented at the beginning or in the temporal center of a 400-ms broadband noise masker. In the first experiment, a 200-ms broadband precursor was presented either to the ipsilateral or to the contralateral ear. The ipsilateral precursor reduced overshoot for all ten subjects, but the contralateral precursor reduced overshoot for only four of the ten subjects. In a supplementary experiment, the contralateral precursor failed to reduce overshoot in a new group of five subjects, both when tested with supra-aural headphones and with insert earphones. In the second experiment, the four subjects who showed an effect of the contralateral precursor in experiment 1 were tested under conditions where the bandwidth of the precursor was manipulated, resulting in either a narrow-band precursor centered at 4000 Hz, a low-band precursor with energy primarily below 4000 Hz, or a high-band precursor with energy primarily above 4000 Hz. There was a tendency for the effectiveness of the ipsilateral and contralateral precursors to be affected similarly (though to different degrees) by changes in the spectral content of the precursor. These results suggest that the effect of the contralateral precursor is not due to a timing cue, and that the processing underlying the effectiveness of ipsilateral and contralateral precursors may be largely the same. 相似文献

Psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) were obtained in simultaneous and forward masking for a 20-ms, 1000-Hz signal presented at 10 dB SL. The signal was presented at the beginning of, at the temporal center of, at the end of, or immediately following a 400-ms masker. The first experiment was done in quiet; the second experiment was done in the presence of two bands of noise on either side of 1000 Hz. The results were similar in quiet and in noise. In simultaneous masking, the PTCs were broadest for the signal at masker onset, and generally sharpest for the signal at temporal center; the differences were largest on the high-frequency side. In most cases, there was virtually no difference in Q10 between the forward-masking PTC and the simultaneous-masking PTC with the signal temporally centered, although the high-frequency slope was always steeper in forward masking. These results indicate that, at least for brief signals, frequency selectivity measured with simultaneous-masking PTCs and the degree of sharpening revealed in forward-masking PTCs depend upon the temporal position of the signal within the simultaneous masker. 相似文献

The fungus Fusarium verticillioides is a pathogen of many plants and produces fumonisins. In addition to their well-studied animal toxicoses, these toxins contribute
to the development of maize seedling disease in susceptible maize varieties. Fumonisin disruption of sphingolipid biosynthesis
occurs during pathogenesis. An extraction method was developed for the simultaneous analysis of fumonisins B1 (FB1), B2 (FB2) and B3 (FB3), free sphingoid bases and sphingoid base 1-phosphates in maize tissues by liquid chromatography/linear ion trap tandem mass
spectrometry. The method involved a single extraction using 1:1 acetonitrile:water + 5% formic acid (1 ml per 10 mg tissue).
Mean recoveries ranged from approximately 50 to 99 percent, and limits of detection ranged from 10 fg μl−1 to 6900 fg μl−1. To test the efficacy of the method, seeds of a susceptible maize line were inoculated with a pathogenic, fumonisin-producing
strain of F. verticillioides. The seedlings were then harvested, and fumonisin content, as well as sphingoid bases and their 1-phosphates, were measured
in the leaf and root tissues. Fumonisin accumulation was significantly greater in leaf one compared to leaves two and three.
While FB1, FB2, and FB3 were detected in root tissues, FB1 was preferentially accumulated in leaf tissues. Accumulation of sphingoid bases and their 1-phosphates was evident in roots
and leaves of seedlings grown from inoculated seed, with the level of accumulation being similar in leaves 1, 2 and 3. The
method developed was effective, fast, and sensitive for use in simultaneously measuring fumonisin in tissues and their effects
on sphingolipid metabolite biomarkers of disease. The method should be useful for screening maize cultivars for susceptibility
to F. verticillioides-induced seedling diseases.

Simultaneous masking of a 20-ms, 1-kHz signal was investigated using 50-ms gated and continuous sinusoidal maskers with frequencies below, at, and above 1 kHz. Gated maskers can produce considerably (5-20 dB) more masking than continuous maskers, and this difference does not appear to result from the spread of energy produced by gating either the masker or the signal. For masker frequencies below the signal frequency, this difference in masking is primarily due to the detection of the cubic difference tone in the continuous condition. For masker frequencies at and above the signal frequency, the difference appears to be an important property of masking. Implications of this frequency-dependent effect for measures of frequency selectivity are discussed. 相似文献

Recent experiments have shown that frequency selectivity measured in tone-on-tone simultaneous masking improves with increasing delay of a brief signal relative to the onset of a longer duration gated masker. To determine whether a similar improvement occurs for a notched-noise masker, threshold was measured for a 20-ms signal presented at the beginning, the temporal center, or the end of the 400-ms masker (simultaneous masking), or immediately following the masker (forward masking). The notch width was varied systematically and the notch was placed both symmetrically and asymmetrically about the 1-kHz signal frequency. Growth-of-masking functions were determined for each temporal condition, for a noise masker without a spectral notch. These functions were used to express the thresholds from the notched-noise experiment in terms of the level of a flat-spectrum noise which would produce the same threshold. In simultaneous masking the auditory filter shapes derived from the transformed data did not change significantly with signal delay, suggesting that the selectivity of the auditory filter does not develop over time. In forward masking the auditory filter shapes were sharper than those for simultaneous masking, particularly on the high-frequency side, which was attributed to suppression. 相似文献

In tone-on-tone masking, thresholds often decrease as the onset of the signal is delayed relative to the onset of the masker, especially when the frequency of the masker is higher than the frequency of the signal. This temporal effect was studied here by using a tonal "precursor," whose offset preceded the onset of the tonal masker (and signal). Under the right conditions, the precursor can reduce or eliminate the temporal effect by decreasing the threshold for a signal at masker onset, presumably for the same reason that the threshold decreases as a signal is delayed relative to the onset of a masker. In the present study, the frequency of the signal was 4000 Hz, and the frequency of the masker and precursor was typically 5000 Hz. In experiment 1, the precursor was presented to the ear receiving the masker and signal (ipsilateral precursor); in experiment 2, it was presented to the opposite ear (contralateral precursor). The results from experiment 1 can be summarized as follows: the ipsilateral precursor (a) reaches its maximum effectiveness (in reducing the temporal effect) for precursor durations of 200-400 ms; (b) is ineffective once the delay between its offset and the onset of the masker reaches about 50-100 ms; (c) is generally ineffective when its level is 10 or more dB lower than the level of the masker, but is effective when its level is equal to or greater than the level of the masker; and (d) becomes progressively less effective as its frequency is either increased or decreased relative to the frequency of the masker. The results from experiment 2 can be summarized simply by stating that the contralateral precursor is ineffective in reducing the temporal effect. These results suggest that the effect of the precursor may be mediated peripherally. 相似文献
