Difference limens (DLs) for linear frequency transitions using a 1.0-kHz pulsed-tone standard were obtained from 6- to 9-month-old human infants in a series of three experiments. A repeating standard "yes-no" operant headturning technique and an adaptive staircase (tracking) procedure were used to obtain difference limens from a total of 71 infants. The DLs for 300-ms upward and downward linear frequency sweeps were approximately 3%-4% when the repeating standard was an unmodulated 1.0-kHz pulsed tone of 300-ms duration. These DLs for frequency sweeps were not significantly different from DLs for frequency increments and decrements using 330-ms pulsed tones [J. M. Sinnott and R. N. Aslin, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 78, 1986-1992 (1985)]. The DLs for frequency sweeps of 50 ms appended to the beginning or the end of a 250-ms unmodulated 1.0-kHz tone were approximately 6%-7%. This greater DL for brief frequency sweeps was confirmed by varying the duration but not the extent of the sweep. Finally, DLs were greater than 50% when the repeating standard was a 50-ms rising or falling frequency sweep appended to the beginning of a 250-ms unmodulated 1.0-kHz tone. These results suggest that rapid frequency transitions are much more difficult to discriminate from frequency transitions of the same category (rising or falling) than from either a frequency transition of the opposite category (falling or rising) or an unmodulated tone.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Abstract Global warming is expected to affect the ecosystem in the Northeast Atlantic, and substantial changes will also affect the aquaculture industry. Farming of salmon and trout is the biggest aquaculture industry in Norway, with an export value of about 3 billion US dollars in 2007. The objective of the paper is to analyze the potential economic effect a general increase in sea temperature can have on the Norwegian salmon aquaculture industry. The assessment of the economic impact of global warming is made possible by estimating a growth function, which explicitly includes sea water temperature. The analysis compares the economic effect of a climate change on fish farming plants in the south and the north of Norway. The scenarios are based on a model with monthly seasonal variation in temperature.  相似文献

In this work, we investigate the effect of hydrodynamic interactions on the dynamics of DNA translocation through micropores. We simulate DNA as a bead-spring chain and use a lattice Boltzmann method to simulate the flow field that arises from the motion of the molecule. We investigate the free-draining entrance of DNA to the pore by diffusion and find that, consistent with experiments, molecules have a higher probability of entering the pore from one end. We then consider the electric-field driven translocation of 21-210 microm DNA with and without hydrodynamic interactions. Consistent with experiments, we study translocation events that are much shorter than the relaxation time of DNA. We find that the effect of hydrodynamic interactions on this process is to cause different regions of a molecule, other than the ones pulled by voltage or chain connectivity into the pore, to move toward the pore. We quantify this effect and show that it is smaller than the difference in the translocation dynamics of chains that arises from different initial configurations of the molecules. A power-law scaling of translocation time with chain length is observed, with exponents of 1.28+/-0.03 and 1.31+/-0.03 in simulations with and without hydrodynamic interactions, respectively. Our results are in good agreement with recent translocation experiments conducted in small pores and show that, for the regime considered in this work, hydrodynamic interactions play a minor role in the relation of the translocation time to chain length. For fast translocation processes, the effect of hydrodynamic interactions is local and the main factor determining the dynamics of DNA is the initial configuration of the molecules.  相似文献

Frequency and intensity DLs were measured in 26 human infants (ages 7-9 months) and six young adults using a repeating standard "yes-no" operant headturning technique and an adaptive staircase (tracking) psychophysical procedure. Subjects were visually reinforced for responding to frequency increments, frequency decrements, intensity increments, or intensity decrements in an ongoing train of 1.0-kHz tone bursts, and stimulus control was monitored using randomly interleaved probe and catch trials. Infants were easily conditioned to respond to both increments and decrements in frequency, and DLs ranged from 11-29 Hz, while adult DLs ranged from 3-5 Hz. Infants also easily discriminated intensity increments, and DLs ranged from 3-12 dB, while adult DLs ranged from 1-2 dB. No infants successfully discriminated intensity decrements, although adults experienced no difficulty with this task and produced DLs similar to those for increments. The apparent inability of infants to discriminate intensity decrements suggests that the infant CNS may not be well adapted to monitor rate decreases in populations of peripheral auditory neurons.  相似文献

The lower excited states of 2-benzoylthiophene have been studied using ab initio quantum chemical methods based on multiconfigurational wave functions. Six singlet and six triplet excited states have been characterized. The geometry has been optimized for the two lowest triplet states, which are responsible for the photoreactivity of the chromophore in the photosensitizing drug tiaprofenic acid. The T1(π → π?) and T2(n → π?) states have been found to be close in energy with the π → π? state slightly lower. The excited states have been characterized using density difference and spin density plots. The different photochemical behaviour of the two triplet states can be rationalized from the theoretical data.  相似文献

Results are presented from a theoretical study of the × 6Σ+, A 6Σ+ and 6Δ electronic states of CrH using multiconfiguration second-order perturbation theory in the multi-state formalism (MS-CASPT2). It is shown that the results for the spectroscopic constants and radiative lifetimes for the A state are in agreement with experiment and an earlier multireference configuration interaction study only if the two close lying × and A states are allowed to interact at a level of approximation that includes dynamic correlation.  相似文献

According to recent theoretical accounts of place of articulation perception, global, invariant properties of the stop CV syllable onset spectrum serve as primary, innate cues to place of articulation, whereas contextually variable formant transitions constitute secondary, learned cues. By this view, one might expect that young infants would find the discrimination of place of articulation contrasts signaled by formant transition differences more difficult than those cued by gross spectral differences. Using an operant head-turning paradigm, we found that 6-month-old infants were able to discriminate two-formant stimuli contrasting in place of articulation as well as they did five-formant + burst stimuli. Apparently, neither the global properties of the onset spectrum nor simply the additional acoustic information contained in the five-formant + burst stimuli afford the infant any advantage in the discrimination task. Rather, formant transition information provides a sufficient basis for discriminating place of articulation differences.  相似文献

Abstract— Photoinactivation in vitro at pH 7.0 of catalases from different sources (bovine liver, spinach leaves, and Micrococcus lysodeikticus) was studied. The wavelength of the inactivating light was close to the Soret peak of catalase. No great difference in light sensitivity between soluble catalases were found; the inactivation cross sections found ranged from 3.8.10-4 to 5.0. 10-4Å2/molecule. The inactivation quantum yield is 2.2. 10-5 for bovine liver catalase and 3.110-5 for Micrococcus catalase. The quantum yield for soluble spinach catalase is of a similar order of magnitude. There are some indications of a greater resistance to photodestruction of the spinach leaf catalase activity associated with small particles.  相似文献
