We investigate mixing in a viscoelastic and shear-thinning fluid-a very common combination in polymers and suspensions. We find that competition between elastic and viscous forces generates self-similar mixing, lobe transport, and other characteristics of chaos. The mechanism by which chaos is produced is evaluated both in experiments and in a simple model. We find that chaotic flow is generated by spontaneous oscillations, the magnitude and frequency of which govern the extent of chaos and mixing. 相似文献

Motivated by circle graphs, and the enumeration of Euler circuits, we define a one-variable “interlace polynomial” for any graph. The polynomial satisfies a beautiful and unexpected reduction relation, quite different from the cut and fuse reduction characterizing the Tutte polynomial.It emerges that the interlace graph polynomial may be viewed as a special case of the Martin polynomial of an isotropic system, which underlies its connections with the circuit partition polynomial and the Kauffman brackets of a link diagram. The graph polynomial, in addition to being perhaps more broadly accessible than the Martin polynomial for isotropic systems, also has a two-variable generalization that is unknown for the Martin polynomial. We consider extremal properties of the interlace polynomial, its values for various special graphs, and evaluations which relate to basic graph properties such as the component and independence numbers. 相似文献

We have studied the trends in catalytic activity of several Co macrocyclics confined on the surface graphite electrodes for the oxidation of thiocyanate. A plot of log i (at constant E) versus the formal potential of the catalyst gives a volcano correlation, indicating that the Co(II/I) redox potential needs to be tuned, in order to achieve maximum reactivity. Graphite electrodes modified with Co phthalocyanine at pH 4 exhibit linear amperometric response for thiocyanate concentration in the range 10?7 and 10?3 M. Theoretical calculations show that electrocatalytic activity (as log i at constant E) plotted versus the energy of the LUMO of the Co complex also gives a volcano correlation. 相似文献

The rheology near jamming of a suspension of soft colloidal spheres is studied using a custom microfluidic rheometer that provides the stress versus strain rate over many decades. We find non-Newtonian behavior below the jamming concentration and yield-stress behavior above it. The data may be collapsed onto two branches with critical scaling exponents that agree with expectations based on Hertzian contacts and viscous drag. These results support the conclusion that jamming is similar to a critical phase transition, but with interaction-dependent exponents. 相似文献

The effects of fluid viscosity on the kinematics of a small swimmer at low Reynolds numbers are investigated in both experiments
and in a simple model. The swimmer is the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, which is an undulating roundworm approximately 1 mm long. Experiments show that the nematode maintains a highly periodic
swimming behavior as the fluid viscosity is varied from 1.0 to 12 mPa s. Surprisingly, the nematode’s swimming speed (~0.35 mm/s)
is nearly insensitive to the range of fluid viscosities investigated here. However, the nematode’s beating frequency decreases
to an asymptotic value (~1.7 Hz) with increasing fluid viscosity. A simple model is used to estimate the nematode’s Young’s
modulus and tissue viscosity. Both material properties increase with increasing fluid viscosity. It is proposed that the increase
in Young’s modulus may be associated with muscle contraction in response to larger mechanical loading while the increase in
effective tissue viscosity may be associated with the energy necessary to overcome increased fluid drag forces. 相似文献

Density functional theory and time dependent density functional theory calculations at the level of LDA/BP86/TZ2P were performed systematically on several Ti(IV) complexes of porphyrazines and one phthalocyanine. We performed an analysis of the frontier molecular orbitals of the ground state electronic structures and also discuss in particular the good concordance of our results with the experimental data, which affords to predict the geometrical and optical properties of new complexes ( 3 , 4 , and 7 ). We also emphasize the characterization of the UV–vis absorption spectra and propose transitions that contribute to the Q and B bands. Some useful calculated properties in complexes 2 , 3 , and 7 , like: high light absorption in the visible region of the spectra, transitions involved in these bands with a determined direction, charge separation, bigger highest occupied molecular orbital–lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO‐LUMO) gaps than complexes 4 and 5 , and the energy of their LUMO orbitals (that are higher than the lowest energy level of the conduction band of the TiO2) indicate that system complexes 2 , 3 , and 7 could act as light‐harvesting sensitizers for dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSCs). These proposals were made using a model of the previously experimentally known phthalocyanine, which was used as sensitizer in DSCs devices, comparing its electronic properties with the herein proposed sensitizers. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
