The design and development of a multichannel atomic absorption spectrometer for the simultaneous determination of trace metals in hair

A multichannel atomic absorption spectrometer capable of analysing up to nine elements simultaneously in human hair has been designed. Light from an array of hollow-cathode lamps is passed through an electrically heated graphite tube into a direct reading spectrometer. The photomultiplier output is fed into a novel transient signalprocessing device which separates the absorption pulse from the continuous background and increases linear range and sensitivity. Solutions containing Ni, Co, Si, Mn, Al, Cu, Ag, Cr and Fe in nanogram and sub-nanogram amounts can be determined with reasonable precision.     

A semi-hierarchic computer network for data acquisition and control in staircase voltammetry

A simple computer system designed for controlling voltammetric experiments has been implemented. The system connects a Hewlett-Packard 2100A minicomputer with a Texas Instruments 9900 microcomputer by means of a bidirectional serial transmission link. Experimental parameters are down-loaded from the host to the satellite which supervises the experiments at a remote location. The data collected are transmitted back to the host at 2400 baud for reduction and plotting. Through this division of labor, each system is used to its best advantage. Although the software developed is specifically for staircase voltammetry, the system hardware is of general-purpose design which is suited for other types of pulse experiment.     

ON LACUNARY STATISTICAL CONVERGENCE OF ORDER α

In this article, we introduce the concept of lacunary statistical convergence of order α of real number sequences and give some inclusion relations between the sets of lacunary statistical convergence of order α and strong Nαθ(p)-summability. Furthermore, some relations between the spaces Nαθ(p) and Sαθare examined.     

Demonstration of ignition radiation temperatures in indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion hohlraums

We demonstrate the hohlraum radiation temperature and symmetry required for ignition-scale inertial confinement fusion capsule implosions. Cryogenic gas-filled hohlraums with 2.2 mm-diameter capsules are heated with unprecedented laser energies of 1.2 MJ delivered by 192 ultraviolet laser beams on the National Ignition Facility. Laser backscatter measurements show that these hohlraums absorb 87% to 91% of the incident laser power resulting in peak radiation temperatures of T(RAD)=300 eV and a symmetric implosion to a 100 μm diameter hot core.     

Orthogonally Positioned Diamino Pyrrole- and Imidazole-Containing Polyamides: Synthesis of 1-(3-Substituted-propyl)-4-nitropyrrole-2-carboxylic Acid and 1-(3-Chloropropyl)-4-nitroimidazole-2-carboxylic Acid

Pyrrole- and imidazole-containing polyamides can be tailored to recognize the DNA 6–8 base pair sequence. We found that adding a second amino group via the N1-position of pyrrole or imidazole in polyamides could enhance their DNA binding affinity and water solubility while retaining sequence specificity. Synthesis of the key 1-substituted-4-nitropyrrole (and imidazole)-2-carboxylic acid building blocks are described.

Effect of test method on winter traction measurements

Traction on winter surfaces was measured using three instrumented vehicles, each designed to measure traction for a different purpose: vehicle mobility research (CRREL instrumented vehicle), commercial tire testing (Uniroyal-Goodrich traction tester), and airport runway safety (Saab friction tester). The traction measured with each method is comparable but there are systematic differences due to the effects of the surface materials and test and analysis techniques. This comparison serves as the basis for collaboration between the various traction testing communities and illustrates the need for well documented, standard test and analysis procedures for traction testing and evaluation.     

SOME GEOMETRIC PROPERTIES OF A NEW DIFFERENCE SEQUENCE SPACE INVOLVING LACUNARY SEQUENCES

In this paper, we define a new generalized difference sequence space involving lacunary sequence. Then, we examine k-NUC property and property （β） for this space and also show that it is not rotund where p = （pr） is a bounded sequence of positive real numbers with pr ≥ 1 for all r ∈ N.
