In this work we explore the possibility to perform “effective energy” studies in very high energy collisions at the CERN large
hadron collider (LHC). In particular, we focus on the possibility to measure in pp collisions the average charged multiplicity
as a function of the effective energy with the ALICE experiment, using its capability to measure the energy of the leading
baryons with the zero degree calorimeters. Analyses of this kind have been done at lower centre-of-mass energies and have
shown that, once the appropriate kinematic variables are chosen, particle production is characterized by universal properties:
no matter the nature of the interacting particles, the final states have identical features. Assuming that this universality
picture can be extended to ion–ion collisions, as suggested by recent results from RHIC experiments, a novel approach based on the scaling hypothesis for limiting
fragmentation has been used to derive the expected charged event multiplicity in AA interactions at LHC. This leads to scenarios
where the multiplicity is significantly lower compared to most of the predictions from the models currently used to describe
high energy AA collisions. A mean charged multiplicity of about 1000–2000 per rapidity unit (at η∼0) is expected for the most
central Pb–Pb collisions at .

The Time-Of-Flight detector (TOF) of the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC is based on Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs). The TOF detector consists of 152928 readout channels covering a total area of 141 m2. In this paper the results of the calibration with cosmic-ray data collected during 2009 are presented. 相似文献

The first measurement of the charged-particle multiplicity density at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair √ S NN = 2.76 TeV is presented. For an event sample corresponding to the most central 5% of the hadronic cross section, the pseudorapidity density of primary charged particles at midrapidity is 1584 ± 4(stat) ± 76(syst), which corresponds to 8.3 ± 0.4(syst) per participating nucleon pair. This represents an increase of about a factor 1.9 relative to pp collisions at similar collision energies, and about a factor 2.2 to central Au-Au collisions at √ S NN = 2.76 TeV. This measurement provides the first experimental constraint for models of nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC energies. 相似文献

We report the first measurement of charged particle elliptic flow in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[S(NN)] =2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is performed in the central pseudorapidity region (|η|<0.8) and transverse momentum range 0.2

Energy dependence of the differential cross sections for the production of K +-mesons with a momentum of 1.28 GeV/c (c is the speed of light) by protons incident on Be, Al, Cu, and Ta nuclei was measured for energies both above and below the K +-meson production threshold in pp collisions. Evidence is given for the dominance of the mechanism of direct production in the experiment. The characteristics of momentum distribution are determined for nucleons in the Be and Al nuclei up to 650 MeV/c. The data cannot be described in the model of nuclear spectral function. 相似文献

Double differential cross sections for nearthreshold and subthreshold production ofK + with momentum 1.28 GeV/c at 10.5 degree on Be, Al and Cu targets had been measured. The experiment was performed with FH Spectrometer at ITEP PS in projectile proton kinetic energy range 2.9 – 1.65 GeV. The performed analysis of the excitation functions and target atomic mass dependencies evidences for high order multinucleon correlations are involved in deep subthreshold kaon production. 相似文献

The ALICE Collaboration has studied J/ψ production in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV at the LHC through its muon pair decay. The polar and azimuthal angle distributions of the decay muons were measured, and results on the J/ψ polarization parameters λ(θ) and λ(φ) were obtained. We report on the first measurement of the triangular v3, quadrangular v4, and pentagonal v5 charged particle flow in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV measured with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We show that the triangular flow can be described in terms of the initial spatial anisotropy and its fluctuations, which provides strong constraints on its origin. In the most central events, where the elliptic flow v2 and v3 have similar magnitude, a double peaked structure in the two-particle azimuthal correlations is observed, which is often interpreted as a Mach cone response to fast partons. We show that this structure can be naturally explained from the measured anisotropic flow Fourier coefficients. 相似文献

The centrality dependence of the charged-particle multiplicity density at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV is presented. The charged-particle density normalized per participating nucleon pair increases by about a factor of 2 from peripheral (70%-80%) to central (0%-5%) collisions. The centrality dependence is found to be similar to that observed at lower collision energies. The data are compared with models based on different mechanisms for particle production in nuclear collisions. 相似文献
