Synthesis and ring-chain isomerism of acid chlorides and amides of 2-(2-pyridyl and 2-quinolylcarbonyl) benzoic acids

The reaction of 2-(2 pyridytcarbonyl)benzoic acid with thionyl chloride affords an unexpected product of the intramolecular acylation of the pyridine nitrogen atom, namely, 6,11-dioxo-6,11-dihydrobenzo[blquinotizinium chloride. At the same time, 2-(2-quinotylcarbonyl)benzoic acid forms the expected cyclic acid chloride, namely, 3-(2-gitinotyl)-3-chlorophthalide in this reaction. Both compounds acylate ammonia and primary amines, including those with bulky alkyl groups (tert-butyl, 1-adamantyl, and 1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl) with the formation of 2-R-3-hydroxy-3-(2pyridyl- or 2-quinolyl)isoindolines. The protonation of the pyridine nitrogen atom of N-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)-2-(2pyridylcarbonyl)benzamide, obtained in the open amide form, is accompanied by the closing of the isoindotinone ring; the deprotonation is accompanied by ring opening.Riga Technical University, Riga LV-1048. Biosorption of Chromium(III) by Biomass of Seaweed Sargassum sp. in a Fixed-Bed Column

This work aimed at modeling chromium biosorption using the biomass of seaweed Sargassum sp. in a fixed-bed column. The mathematical model used was obtained from the mass balance of the component in the liquid phase and in the biosorbent material. The effects of both axial dispersion in the column and the resistance to mass transfer in the solid were considered for the solution of the partial differential equations of the model, using the Galerkin method on finite elements. To represent the equilibrium data of the batch system the Langmuir isotherm were used. The chromium ion adsorption capacity of the seaweed Sargassum sp., at a temperature of 30°C and pH 3.5, was 2.61 mmol/g. The model performance was evaluated from experimental data obtained at 30°C for flow rates of 2, 6 and 8 mL/min. The parameters of the model, mass transfer and axial dispersion coefficients, were adjusted from these experimental data. The model proved adequate to describe chromium biosorption dynamics in fixed-bed columns.     

On a Modified Subgradient Algorithm for Dual Problems via Sharp Augmented Lagrangian*

We study convergence properties of a modified subgradient algorithm, applied to the dual problem defined by the sharp augmented Lagrangian. The primal problem we consider is nonconvex and nondifferentiable, with equality constraints. We obtain primal and dual convergence results, as well as a condition for existence of a dual solution. Using a practical selection of the step-size parameters, we demonstrate the algorithm and its advantages on test problems, including an integer programming and an optimal control problem. *Partially Supported by 2003 UniSA ITEE Small Research Grant Ero2. X-ray fluorescent and EXAFS studies of the electronic and spatial structure of dialkyl sulfides and their PdCl2 complexes in extraction systems

SK_α, SK_β, ClK_β, ClK_β, and PdL_β2 X-ray fluorescent and PdK EXAFS spectra were obtained for some organic solutions of dialkyl sulfide complexes with palladium chloride. Solvent effects on the electronic and spatial structure of complexes in solution are discussed. In the benzene solution of [PdCl₂2(C₆H₁₃)₂S], complex molecules interact with solvent molecules along a coordinate that is perpendicular to the plane of the complex molecule. Modulation of Particle Concentrations in the Interference Laser Radiation Field

Spatial redistribution of microparticles in a suspension on exposure to the interference laser field depending on the parameters of the particles and the field characteristics has been analyzed theoretically. Results of experimental investigations are presented that illustrate the capture of an ensemble of polymeric small spheres and also of the lymphocytes of human blood and other microparticles in a liquid in the interference radiation bands of the He–Ne laser.
