Self-aligned imaging system using phase conjugate readout from elementary holographic grating

We propose a self-aligned imaging system (SAIS) using phase conjugate readout from an elementary holographic grating. The SAIS provides a huge amount of interconnections between a lot of points on two corresponding imaging planes without troublesome mechanical alignment. In the SAIS, a hologram for one-to-one interconnection is used for many-to-many interconnections. In addition, the SAIS has the capability of correcting aberration. Preliminary experiments verify the principle and the capability of the SAIS.     

Steric Effect in [6+4] Cycloadditions. Part II

2-Chlorotropone reacts with 6,6-dimethylfulvene to form a 1:1 adduct only. From kinetic data as well as from structural evidence the conclusion was drawn that the [6+4] cycloidditions between tropones and cyclopentadiene or fulvenes are highly disfavoured by substituents at the reaction center.     

Participation of Non-Conjugated Double Bonds in Diels-Alder Reactions. A kinetic study of the addition of tropone to norbornens

A kinetic study of Diels-Alder additions between norbornene derivatives acting as dienophiles and the dienes tropone, perchlorocyclopentadiene and 9,10-dimethylanthracene is presented. The results suggest that tropone thereby acts as an electron acceptor, classifying these reactions then as Diels-Alder additions with ‘inverse electron demand’. The role of non-reacting double bonds was investigated using 7-alkylidenorbornene derivatives as dienophiles. These show comparable reactivity in ‘normal’ but enhanced reactivity in ‘inverse electron demand’ Diels-Alder additions. This outcome is interpreted in terms of frontier orbital interactions between the reactants using photoelectron spectroscopical results as a basis for the qualitative perturbation treatment. It is suggested that the enhanced reactivity in the case of the 7-alkylidene derivatives does not necessitate the consideration of a direct (‘through-space’) participation of the non-reacting double bond.     

Genetic optical design for a compressive sensing task

We present a sophisticated optical design method for reducing the number of photodetectors for a specific sensing task. The chosen design parameter is the point spread function, and the selected task is object recognition. The point spread function is optimized iteratively with a genetic algorithm for object recognition based on a neural network. In the experimental demonstration, binary classification of face and non-face datasets was performed with a single measurement using two photodetectors. A spatial light modulator operating in the amplitude modulation mode was provided in the imaging optics and was used to modulate the point spread function. In each generation of the genetic algorithm, the classification accuracy with a pattern displayed on the spatial light modulator was fed-back to the next generation to find better patterns. The proposed method increased the accuracy by about 30 % compared with a conventional imaging system in which the point spread function was the delta function. This approach is practically useful for compressing the cost, size, and observation time of optical sensors in specific applications, and robust for imperfections in optical elements.     

Hypernuclear fine structure in (9)(lambda)Be

With a germanium detector array (Hyperball), we observed two gamma-ray peaks corresponding to the two transitions (5/2(+)-->1/2(+) and 3/2(+)-->1/2(+)) in the (9)(Lambda)Be hypernucleus which was produced by the 9Be(K-,pi(-)) reaction. The energies of the gamma rays are 3029 +/- 2 +/- 1 keV and 3060 +/- 2 +/- 1 keV. The energy difference was measured to be 31.4(+2.5)(-3.6) keV, which indicates a very small Lambda-spin-dependent spin-orbit force between a Lambda and a nucleon. This is the smallest level splitting by far ever measured in a hypernucleus.     

A note on the radiation impedance of a circumferential slit in a circular cylinder

The modal radiation impedance of a circumferential opening in a circular cylinder is obtained as a simple integral formula. Calculation results are presented, demonstrating the effects of the width/radius ratio of the opening.     

Sound propagation and radiation through a vaneless diffuser

A simple analysis has been carried out to examine acoustic effects of attaching to the termination of an annular duct a vaneless diffuser through which incident plane waves propagate and radiate out circumferentially. The results are shown in the form of a reflection coefficient which expresses the ration of the incident and reflected waves at the diffuser inlet.     

Kinetic Investigation of a (6 + 4) Cycloaddition

Kinetics of the [6+4] Cycloaddition of tropone to cyclopenta-1, 3-diene were investigated. It was concluded that the mechanism of this cycloaddition is similar to that of the classic Diels-Alder reaction.     

Measurement of Gamma-Rays from 11ΛB and 12ΛC

From the ^12 C（π^＋,K^＋）^12 AC reaction the γ -rays of 261.6±0.24 ke V（7/2^＋ →5/2^＋）and 1481.7±0.7 ke V（1/2^＋ →5/2^＋） of ^11 A B,and 2667.3±2.8 keV（1^- 2 → 2^- 1）of ^12 A C hypernuclei have been identified using a large germanium detector array Hyperball2 at K6 beam line of KEK. The observed energies of the transitions 1481.7keV and 261.6 keV are significantly different from the values predicted by the shell model using the △ and SN parameters determined from the ^7 △ Li data.     

Multipole effects in non-Kramers doublet system PrMg3

We performed ultrasonic measurements on a single crystal of PrMg₃. The characteristic Curie-type softening was observed in temperature dependence of transverse mode (C₁₁-C₁₂)/2 below 8 K down to 0.8 K. This softening in PrMg₃ is caused by a non-Kramers Γ₃ doublet ground state having electric quadrupoles O_u and O_v and magnetic octupole T_xyz. The elastic constant (C₁₁-C₁₂)/2 shows a minimum at 25 K, which cannot be explained by the quadrupole susceptibility based on the crystal electric field (CEF) levels. However, considering higher order (l=4) multipole, namely electric hexadecapole, the minimum around 25 K was well reproduced. At lower temperatures, a shoulder anomaly in elastic constant being deviated from the Curie-type softening was observed around 100-800 mK in (C₁₁-C₁₂)/2. This anomaly is unaffected by magnetic fields up to 14 T.
