Control of the block copolymer morphology in templated epoxy thermosets

It has been found that by the addition of low concentrations of an amphiphilic block copolymer to an epoxy resin, novel disordered morphologies can be formed and preserved through curing. This article will focus on characterizing the influence of the block copolymer and casting solvent on the templated morphology achieved in the thermoset sample. The ultimate goal of this work is to determine the parameters that would control the microphase morphology produced. Epoxy resins blended with a series of amphiphilic block copolymers based on hydrogenated polyisoprene (polyethylene-alt-propylene or PEP) and polyethylene oxide (PEO), specifically, were investigated. In this article, the cure-induced order–order phase transition from the spherical to wormlike micelle morphology will also be discussed. It is proposed that the formation of the wormlike micelle structure from the spherical micelle structure is similar to the phase transition behavior that occurs in dilute block copolymer solutions as a function of the influence of the solvent on micelle morphology. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. tert‐Butyl (6S)‐4‐hydroxy‐6‐isobutyl‐2‐oxo‐1,2,5,6‐tetra­hydropyridine‐1‐carboxyl­ate and tert‐butyl (4R,6S)‐4‐hydroxy‐6‐iso­butyl‐2‐oxopiperidine‐1‐carboxyl­ate

X‐ray studies reveal that tert‐butyl (6S)‐6‐iso­butyl‐2,4‐dioxo­piperidine‐1‐carboxyl­ate occurs in the 4‐enol form, viz. tert‐butyl (6S)‐4‐hydroxy‐6‐iso­butyl‐2‐oxo‐1,2,5,6‐tetra­hydropyri­dine‐1‐carboxyl­ate, C₁₄H₂₃NO₄, when crystals are grown from a mixture of di­chloro­methane and pentane, and has an axial orientation of the iso­butyl side chain at the 6‐position of the piperidine ring. Reduction of the keto functionality leads predominantly to the corresponding β‐hydroxy­lated δ‐lactam, tert‐butyl (4R,6S)‐4‐hydroxy‐6‐iso­butyl‐2‐oxo­piperidine‐1‐car­boxyl­ate, C₁₄H₂₅NO₄, with a cis configuration of the 4‐hydroxy and 6‐iso­butyl groups. The two compounds show similar molecular packing driven by strong O—H⋯O=C hydrogen bonds, leading to infinite chains in the crystal structure.     

Determination of temperature by stimulated raman scattering of molecular nitrogen,oxygen, and carbon dioxide

We have determined the temperature from SRS spectra of N₂-N₂, N₂-CO₂, O₂-O₂, and CO₂-CO₂ recorded in wide pressure and temperature ranges. The fitting procedure takes simultaneously into account the Dicke effect and motional narrowing. We have quantified the accuracy of the MEG and ECS-P models for rotational relaxation. The temperature extracted from each model is compared with thermocouple measurements. The influence of vibrational broadening and shifting is discussed in detail.

Résumé La méthyl-9-trihydroxy-2,3,7-fluorone-6 permet de déceler les ions de l'antimoine, en présence de tous autres cations et anions. Les conditions deph (ph = 4) sont à observer rigoureusement.Ce nouveau réactif est avantageusement utilisé dans la méthode d'analyse à la touche ou par empreinte.Les limites de sensibilité sont: en godet 0,2; sur papier gélatine 0,5; sur papier filtre 0,8.

Summary Methyl-9-trihydroxy-2,3,7-fluorone-6 is a reagent which allows to detect antimony ion in the presence of all the other cations and anions. Aph value of 4 must be strictly maintained.This new reagent can be advantageously applied for spot test and offprint analysis.Limits of identification: On the spot test plate 0,2; On gelatine paper 0,5; On filter paper 0,8.

Dieph-Bedingungen (ph = 4) sind streng einzuhalten.Dieses neue Reagens läßt sich mit Vorteil zur Tüpfel- oder Abdruckanalyse verwenden.Erfassungsgrenzen: auf der Tüpfelplatte 0,2; auf Gelatinepapier 0,5; auf Filtrierpapier 0,8.

     

A Role for Neuropeptides in UVB-Induced Systemic Immunosuppression

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible role of sensory nerves in UV light-induced systemic immunomodulation. Contact hypersensitivity to the low molecular weight compound picrylchloride was used as a model for cellular immunity that can be suppressed by low (i.e. suberythemal) doses of UV light even after exposure at a distant locus (i.e. systemic immunosuppression). In sensory nerve-depleted mice, achieved by two subcutaneous injections with the neurotoxin capsaicin before the age of 4 weeks, UV light exposure failed to inhibit contact hypersensitivity responses to picrylchloride. This indicates that sensory nerves are at least partially involved in the induction of systemic immunosuppression by UV light. In order to analyze whether sensory neuropeptides, such as calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and tachykinins, are involved in UV light-induced systemic immunosuppression, mice were pretreated with selective antagonists prior to each UV light exposure. These experiments indicated that CGRP but not the tachykinins plays a crucial role in the UV light-induced systemic immunosuppression.     

Self-assembly of dendrimers by slippage

[reaction: see text] A dendrimer with rotaxane-like characteristics has been assembled under thermodynamic control from complementary wedge-shaped precursors by slippage in CH(2)Cl(2). The driving force for the self-assembly process is the molecular recognition that exists as a result of [N(+)-H.O] and [C-H.O] hydrogen bonds between an NH(2)(+) center in one Fréchet-type benzyl ether wedge and a dibenzo[24]crown-8 unit that links the other two such wedges.
