Optimal balanced control for call centers

In this paper we study the optimal assignment of tasks to agents in a call center. For this type of problem, typically, no single deterministic and stationary (i.e., state independent and easily implementable) policy yields the optimal control, and mixed strategies are used. Other than finding the optimal mixed strategy, we propose to optimize the performance over the set of ??balanced?? deterministic periodic non-stationary policies. We provide a stochastic approximation algorithm that allows to find the optimal balanced policy by means of Monte Carlo simulation. As illustrated by numerical examples, the optimal balanced policy outperforms the optimal mixed strategy.

Prioritizing replenishments of the piece picking area

Having sufficient inventories in the forward or piece picking area of a warehouse is an essential condition for warehouse operations. As pickers consume the inventory in the piece racks, there is a risk of stockout. This can be reduced by the timely replenishment of products from the bulk reserve area to the forward area. We develop and compare three policies for prioritizing replenishments for the case where order picking and replenishments occur concurrently because of time restrictions. The first policy, based on the ratio of available inventory to wave demand, reduces the number of stockouts considerably. The other two more sophisticated policies reduce the number of stockouts even more but require much more computation time, and are more costly in terms of implementation, maintenance and software updates. We present the results of implementing one of these policies in the warehouse of a large cosmetics firm.

Microwave Irradiation for Accelerating Synthesis of Diarylimidizo[1,5‐a]pyrimidine Based on Isoflavones

Microwave irradiation was used to accelerate the cyclocondensation of isoflavones and 5‐amino‐1H‐imidazole‐4‐carboxamide in the presence of sodium hydroxide to produce 3,4‐diphenyl‐imidazo[1,5‐a]pyrimidines in good to moderate yields.
