NMR studies of conformations and dynamic processes—II : [26]Bicyclophanes with ethylene bridges

The conformations and dynamic processes in two bicyclophanes have been analysed on the basis of temperature-dependent ¹H NMR spectra. Both bicyclophanes are suggested to have a lowest-energy conformation of D₃ symmetry in which the substituents at all ethylene bridges are gauche⁺ (or gauche^?) oriented. The interconversion of the mirror image conformers of each bicyclophane equilibrates the two hydrogens in each methylene group, the barriers being ca 36 and 37 kJ mol^?1, respectively, as determined by line-shape analysis.     

Direct Electrochemical Investigations of 17-Electron Complexes of CpM(CO)(3)(*) (M = Mo, W, and Cr)

Photolysis of complexes of the type M(2)(CO)(6)(RC(5)H(4))(2) (where M = W, Mo, Cr and R = H (Cp) or CH(3) (Cp')) leads to the production of short lived 17-electron radicals. Direct electrochemical characterization of these intermediates has been achieved using a technique known as photomodulated voltammetry (PMV). The results from PMV analysis are in excellent agreement with literature estimates for CpMo(CO)(3)(*) and CpCr(CO)(3)(*). However, CpW(CO)(3)(*) is found to be shifted oxidatively 115 mV relative to previous literature estimates. The change in the value for the tungsten complex changes previous estimates to the bond dissociation energy for tungsten metal hydrides by 3.0 +/- 0.9 kcal/mol. Lifetime information on the radicals is also reported based on the phase shift of the electrochemical signal observed by PMV under limiting current conditions.     

Stereoselective synthesis of (E)-beta-tributylstannyl-alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones: construction of a key intermediate for the total synthesis of zoanthamine

(E)-beta-Trialkylstannyl-alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones are readily available from secondary propargylic alcohols via a two-step sequence involving highly regio- and stereoselective Pd(0)-catalyzed hydrostannation followed by mild oxidation (TPAP). The methodology has been applied to the synthesis of enantiomerically pure enone 12 which is a key intermediate for the total synthesis of zoanthamine, a structurally complex marine natural product.     

Highly stereoselective addition of stannylcuprates to alkynones

The addition of stannylcuprate reagents such as (Bu3Sn)(PhS)CuLi to alkynones has been found to proceed in high yield and with excellent stereoselectivity for the Z isomer of the product (>95%). The behavior of the stannylcuprates is thus very different from that of their "carbocuprate" counterparts such as Me2CuLi or Me2Cu(CN)Li2 which are nonstereoselective. Furthermore, in contrast to the reactions of (R3Sn)(PhS)CuLi with the corresponding alkynoates, the presence of a proton source in the reaction medium has no effect on the stereoselectivity of the reaction of alkynones.
