A methodology is proposed for the construction of a representative volume element (RVE) for analysis of laminated composites containing two arrays of ply cracks running in different directions. The only requirement is that the cracks in any ply are uniformly spaced, and if more than one ply of a given orientation is cracked, then the crack spacing of individual plies must only be in exact multiples of each other. The spacing of cracks in the two directions can be fully independent. The RVE is constructed through a systematic consideration of translational symmetries present in the cracked laminate. As a result, the boundary conditions on the RVE can be imposed without compromising accuracy. Examples of the application of the RVE methodology are given to illustrate its broad capability and a finite element (FE) stress analysis is performed for these cases to illustrate results such as the crack surface displacements, local stress fields and RVE-averaged elastic properties. For one case, the average properties are compared with experimental results, showing good agreement.  相似文献

The transformation of CO2 into fuels and chemicals by photocatalysis is a promising strategy to provide a long‐term solution to mitigating global warming and energy‐supply problems. Achievements in photocatalysis during the last decade have sparked increased interest in using sunlight to reduce CO2. Traditional semiconductors used in photocatalysis (e.g. TiO2) are not suitable for use in natural sunlight and their performance is not sufficient even under UV irradiation. Some two‐dimensional (2D) materials have recently been designed for the catalytic reduction of CO2. These materials still require significant modification, which is a challenge when designing a photocatalytic process. An overarching aim of this Review is to summarize the literature on the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 by various 2D materials in the liquid phase, with special attention given to the development of novel 2D photocatalyst materials to provide a basis for improved materials.  相似文献

Termites, beetles, and other arthropods can digest living and decaying wood plus other lignocellulosic plant litter. Microbial sources like other wood-eating insect guts and wastewater treatment sludge were screened for lignin depolymerization. Near infrared spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) along with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), were used to track changes in functional groups, size, shape, and molecular weight of lignin molecules during incubations. Odontotaenius disjunctus (Betsy beetle) guts dissected whole or separately as midgut, foregut, and hindgut, consumed corn stover but did not show lignin depolymerization. The sludge-treated lignin did show some reduction in molecular weight on the HPLC, particle size (350-650 nm initially to 135-220 nm by day 30) and particles per field on AFM. pH and the presence of nutrients had a substantial effect on the extent of depolymerization. Cultures in lignin and nutrients showed higher growth than cultures with lignin only. Colony characteristics within the beetle gut and the sludge were also evaluated.  相似文献

The quality, size, and number of protein crystals grown under conditions of continuous solvent extraction are dependent on the rate of solvent extraction and the initial protein and salt concentration. An increase in the rate of solvent extraction leads to a larger number of crystals. The number of crystals decreases, however, when the experiment is started with an initial protein concentration that is closer to the solubility boundary. Here we develop a kinetic model capable of predicting changes in the number and size of protein crystals as a function of time under continuous evaporation. Moreover, this model successfully predicts the initial condition of drops that will result in gel formation. We test this model with experimental crystal growth data of hen egg white lysozyme for which crystal nucleation and growth rate parameters are known from other studies. The predicted and observed rates of crystal growth are in excellent agreement, which suggests that kinetic constants for nucleation and crystal growth for different proteins can be extracted by applying a kinetic model in combination with observations from a few evaporation-based crystallization experiments.  相似文献

An important aspect of the response of a metal subjected to cyclic loading and a superimposed mean load is its capacity for progressive strain accumulation. In the present investigation, random loading with tensile mean loads is applied to carbon-steel specimens. The cycle-dependent creep properties are described and a phenomenological approach to predict the number of cycles to ductile failure is proposed. At lower stress values, the fatigue-type brittle failure occurs. To predict the failure lives, the familiar fatigue-damage theory is modified for the case of random loading, and the effect of mean stress is included.  相似文献

This work examines the effects of manufacturing induced voids on the postbuckling behavior of delaminated unidirectional composites. In the finite element model developed, a through-width delamination is introduced close to one surface of a flat panel, and a void is placed in the delamination plane ahead of each delamination front. The panel is subjected to compression in the fiber direction. The postbuckling delamination growth is studied by calculating the strain energy release rate (SERR) using the virtual crack closure technique. Local stress analyses of the region near the delamination front are also performed to further investigate the void effects. It is found that although the presence of void does not significantly alter the postbuckling transverse displacement of the delaminated panel, the induced stress perturbation by the void affects the SERR. The Mode II SERR as well as the total SERR increase depending on the size of the void and its distance from the delamination front. Since the Mode I SERR shows non-monotonic behavior with the applied load, the effects of voids are studied on its maximum value.  相似文献

Mild reaction conditions for Petasis reactions of substituted salicylaldehydes with various amines and arylboronic acids in the presence of molecular sieves were developed. Molecular sieves (MS) significantly accelerated the reaction rates and drove the reactions to high conversions. The conditions were applied to the synthesis of the core structure of BIIB042, a γ-secretase modulator, without stereochemical erosion of a stereogenic center in the salicylaldehyde intermediate.  相似文献
