Abstract— –Pulse radiolysis has been used to excite the triplet states of β-carotene (τ# 9μ sec) and lycopene (τ= 8μsec) in hexane solution, both in the presence and absence of naphthalene as a triplet sensitiser. The absorption spectra of both triplets have been measured in the range 430–550 nm and have thus been extended into the region of the corresponding singlet absorptions. The overlap of the triplet and singlet spectra is discussed in relation to in vivo studies. Extinction coefficients of 1.3±0.1 × 105 l/mole cm for β-carotene triplet 515 nm and 3.9±0.2 × 105 l/mole cm for lycopene triplet at 525 nm were obtained. Isomerisation of the all- trans polyenes used was detected and preliminary measurements indicate that the yield of isomerisation was greater than the triplet yield. The rate of triplet energy transfer from naphthalene to β-carotene was estimated to be 1.5 × 1010 l/mole sec. The corresponding value for lycopene was 1.4× 1010 l/mole sec. The measured efficient quenching of triplet β-carotene by oxygen may occur by an energy transfer mechanism, leading to the formation of singlet oxygen (1Δg. This would suggest that the triplet energy level of β-carotene lies between 121 and 94 kJ mole-1.  相似文献

Abstract— The photochemical interaction between 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) and the melanin precursorL–3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine(dopaH2) has been studied using laser flash photolysis. Triplet excited 8-MOP was thus found to abstract electrons from dopaH2 ( k ∼ 2 × 109 dm3 mol-1 s-1) to form semireduced 8-MOP and semioxidised dopaH2.The technique of pulse radiolysis was used to establish separately the spectra of (a) the semi-reduced form of 8-MOP at pH 6.5 and (b) the semioxidised forms of dopaH2 at pH 6.5, 5.8, 4.6 and 3.3. The corresponding λmax and extinction coefficients found were: for 8-MOP at pH 6.5, λmax= 350 nm (= 9050 dm3 mol-1 cm-1); for dopa at pH 6.5, λmax= 305 nm (ε= 12000 dm3 mol-1 cm-1) and for dopaH at pH 3.3, λ= 305 nm (ε= 5900 dm3 mol-1 cm-1).  相似文献

Abstract— The photochemistry of several 4-hydroxy- and 4-methoxybenzothiazoles has been investigated by laser flash photolysis. In aqueous solutions of pH3–12, the 4-hydroxybenzothiazole chromophore undergoes monophotonic photoionization to afford e-aq with quantum yields on the order of 0.06; no evidence for triplet species was obtained. The spectra and stability of the resultant free radicals were determined using pulse radiolysis. In contrast, triplet transients with life-times on the order of 8 mUs are readily observable upon irradiation of the 4-methoxybenzothiazole analog. Triplet sensitization experiments with the water-soluble carotenoid crocetin were employed to obtain the triplet extinction coefficients and subsequently the triplet quantum yields. The significance of these differences in photochemical behavior is discussed in relationship to the photochemistry and photobiology of the epidermal melanin pigment pheomelanin.  相似文献

The autoignition of flammable fluids in lagging materials isa major problem faced by the process industry. It is importantto ascertain whether such a system is safe or if it will undergoignition for a particular set of conditions. In this paper,a three-component model of this system is considered which includesexothermic oxidation and endothermic evaporation processes.By assuming a slow rate of consumption of fuel and oxygen, thebehaviour of the full system can be approximated and the safeand dangerous regions of parameter space can be identified.The effect of changes in parameters such as the size and theendothermicity are discussed in detail.  相似文献

The photocytotoxicity of sulfonated phthalimidomethyl aluminum phthalocyanine, a more hydrophobic photosensitizer as compared to phthalocyanine substituted with sulfonate groups only, was investigated. Inclusion of 1-2 phthalimidomethyl groups into disulfonated aluminum phthalocyanine, resulted in increased partition coefficients between n-octanol and water, and a six-fold increase in both cellular uptake and photocytotoxicity towards Chinese hamster lung fibroblast cells (line V-79). Reducing the number of phthalimidomethyl groups, or increasing the degree of sulfonation, lead to a decrease in the partition coefficient, cellular uptake, and phototoxicity. The quantum yield of singlet oxygen was comparable for all dyes tested in this series, indicating that no significant change in this photophysical parameter resulted from phthalimidomethylation. These results suggest that the addition of 1-2 phthalimidomethyl groups to disulfonated aluminum phthalocyanine improves cellular uptake, but, as the relative efficiency of cell killing was not effected, the intracellular distribution on photosensitive molecules may not be modified.  相似文献

Abstract— The triplet-triplet absorption spectra of six polyenes have been characterised using flash photolysis, in the presence of anthracene as sensitizer, and pulse radiolysis, in the absence of a sensitizer. The polyenes include several which contain carbonyl groups whose triplet states, unlike retinal , could not be detected unsensitized by flash photolysis. The triplet lifetimes appear to be a function of the number of conjugated double bonds, and vary between 7 and 14 μ sec. In general, the longer the polyene, the shorter the lifetime. An empirical linear relation was found between the frequencies of the polyene triplet-triplet absorption maxima, and the frequencies of the corresponding ground singlet-singlet maxima. The rate constants for quenching by oxygen of nine polyene triplet states were determined to lie in the range 2–7 × 109 M -1 sec-1. The possible mechanisms for oxygen quenching of triplet states are discussed and analogies between the results for oxygen quenching of polyenes and of polyacenes are drawn. The rate constant for oxygen quenching of all- trans -β-carotene triplet was the same in benzene and hexane.  相似文献
