Maximum principle at infinity for complete minimal surfaces in flat 3-manifolds

The main result of this paper is the following maximum principle at infinity:Theorem.Let M ₁ and M ₂ be two disjoint properly embedded complete minimal surfaces with nonempty boundaries, that are stable in a complete flat 3-manifold. Then dist(M ₁,M ₂)=min(dist(M ₁,M ₂), dist(M ₂,M ₁)).In case one boundary is empty, e.g. M ₁,then dist(M ₁,M ₂)=dist(M ₂,M ₁).If both boundaries are empty, then M ₁ and M ₂ are flat.     

Response to tilted magnetic fields in Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8) with columnar defects: evidence for transverse Meissner effect

The transverse Meissner effect (TME) in the highly layered superconductor Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+y) with columnar defects is investigated by transport measurements. We present evidence for the persistence of the Bose glass phase for H(perpendicular)H(+)(perpendicular c), moving kink chains consistent with a commensurate-incommensurate transition scenario are observed. Chaotic dynamics of superconductor vortices in the plastic phase

We present numerical simulation results of driven vortex lattices in the presence of random disorder at zero temperature. We show that the plastic dynamics is readily understood in the framework of chaos theory. Intermittency "routes to chaos" have been clearly identified, and positive Lyapunov exponents and broadband noise, both characteristic of chaos, are found to coincide with the differential resistance peak. Furthermore, the fractal dimension of the strange attractor reveals that the chaotic dynamics of vortices is low dimensional.     

Examples of scalar-flat hypersurfaces in $${\mathbb{R}^{n+1}}$$

Given a hypersurface M of null scalar curvature in the unit sphere , n ≥ 4, such that its second fundamental form has rank greater than 2, we construct a singular scalar-flat hypersurface in as a normal graph over a truncated cone generated by M. Furthermore, this graph is 1-stable if the cone is strictly 1-stable.     

S1-Valued Harmonic Maps with High Topological Degree: Asymptotic Behavior of the Singular Set

We prove that the singularities of harmonic maps from a domain D in the plane to S ¹ minimizing a renomalized energy tend to go to the boundary when their number becomes large.

Polarized infrared reflectivity study of an oriented ceramic of Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 10 + δ (Bi-2223)

The reflectivity spectra of an oriented ceramic of Bi-2223 has been investigated by polarized infrared reflectivity spectroscopy in the energy range 0.005-2.2 eV. It is shown that the data for the polarization parallel to the c axis cannot be fitted with a one-component Drude or extended-Drude model. The conductivity spectrum is then obtained from the best fit of a “double-damping Drude” model to reflectivity spectra, itself derived from the factorized form of the dielectric function, and by a Kramers-Kronig inversion as well. The data and their analysis give a new insight of the 2D character of the system. Received 26 April 2001 and Received in final form 28 August 2001
