Functional zinc(II) phthalocyanines bearing Schiff base complexes as oxidation catalysts for bleaching systems

Oxidation catalysis is used to increase the performance of hydrogen peroxide in laundry bleach applications. Bleach catalysts provide cost‐effective, energy‐saving and environmentally friendly bleach systems yielding perfect stain removal at lower temperatures. This comparative study is based on the synthesis of bis[bis(salicylhydrazonephenoxy)manganese(III)] phthalocyaninatozinc(II) ( 2 ), bis[bis(salicylhydrazonephenoxy)cobalt(III)] phthalocyaninatozinc(II) ( 3 ) and bis[bis(salicylhydrazonephenoxy)iron(III)] phthalocyaninatozinc(II) ( 4 ) as tri‐nuclear complexes consisting of two Schiff base complexes substituting a zinc phthalocyanine. Complexion on the periphery to obtain complexes 2 , 3 , 4 was performed through the reaction of a Schiff base‐substituted phthalocyanine using MnCl₂?4H₂O, CoCl₂?6H₂O or FeCl₃?6H₂O salts in basic condition in dimethylformamide. Fourier transform infrared, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, UV–visible, inductively coupled plasma optical emission and mass spectra were applied to characterize the prepared compounds. The bleach performances of the three phthalocyanine compounds 2 , 3 , 4 were examined by the degradation of morin as hydrophilic dye. The degradation progress in the presence of catalysts 2 , 3 , 4 /H₂O₂ combination in aqueous solution was investigated using an online spectrophotometric method. It was found that the catalysts 2 , 3 , 4 exhibited better bleaching performance at 25 °C than tetraactylethylethylenediamine as bleach activator used in powder detergent formulations for stain removal. Stress Distribution in an Infinite Elastic Body with a Locally Curved Fiber in a Geometrically Nonlinear Statement

Within the framework of a piecewise homogeneous body model, with the use of three-dimensional geometrically nonlinear exact equations of elasticity theory, a method for determining the stress—strain state in unidirectional fibrous composites with locally curved fibers is developed for the case where the interaction between the fibers is neglected. All the investigations are carried out for an infinite elastic body containing a single locally curved fiber. Numerical results illustrating the effect of geometrical nonlinearity on the distribution of the self-balanced normal and shear stresses acting on the interface and arising as a result of local curving of the fiber are presented.__________Russian translation published in Mekhanika Kompozitnykh Materialov, Vol. 41, No. 4, pp. 433–448, July–August, 2005.     

Thermosensitive mucoadhesive gel formulation loaded with 5-Fu: cyclodextrin complex for HPV-induced cervical cancer

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infections are the major cause of cervical cancers. To achieve a better therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance in the treatment for HPV-induced cervical cancers, anticancer agent 5-fluorouracil has been formulated in a vaginal gel using the thermosensitive polymer Pluronic^® F127 together with alternative mucoadhesive polymers e.g., hyaluronic acid, Carbopol 934 and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose. To increase its aqueous solubility and to achieve the complete release of 5-FU from the gel, the drug was incorporated as its inclusion complex with 1:1 molar ratio with either β-cyclodextrin or hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin. Following the characterization of drug:CD complexes, thermosensitive gel formulations containing different mucoadhesive polymers and the drug in free or complexed form were characterized in vitro by determining the gelation temperature and the rheological behavior of different formulations along with the in vitro release profiles of these formulations in pH 5.5 citrate buffer. It was observed that complexation with cyclodextrin accelerated the release of 5-FU with the exception of formulation containing Carbopol 934 as mucoadhesive polymer. As far as rheological properties are concerned, favorable thermosensitive in situ gelling properties were obtained with formulations containing HPMC as mucoadhesive polymer. Complete release of 5-FU from gels were obtained with both complexes of β-CD and HP-β-CD and cytotoxicity studies against HeLa human cervical carcinoma cells demonstrated that 1% 5-FU:CD complexes were equally effective as 1% free 5-FU indicating better therapeutic efficacy with lower dose.     

Photochemical reactions of M(CO)6 (M = Cr,Mo, W) with Ph2P(S)P(S)Ph2

New complexes {M(CO)₄[Ph₂P(S)P(S)Ph₂]} (M = Cr, Mo and W), (1a)–(3a), [(1a), M = Cr; (2a), M = Mo; (3a), M = W] and {M₂(CO)₁₀[-Ph₂P(S)P(S)Ph₂]} (M = Cr, Mo, W), [(1b)–(3b) [(1b), M = Cr; (2b), M = Mo; (3b), M = W]] have been prepared by the photochemical reaction of M(CO)₆ with Ph₂P(S)P(S)Ph₂ and characterized by elemental analyses, f.t.-i.r. and ³¹P-(¹H)-n.m.r. spectroscopy and by FAB-mass spectrometry. The spectra suggest cis-chelate bidentate coordination of the ligand in {M(CO)₄[Ph₂P(S)P(S)Ph₂]} and cis-bridging bidentate coordination of the ligand between two metals in (M = Cr, Mo and W).     

Photochemical reactions of metal carbonyls [M(CO)6 (M = Cr,Mo and W), Re(CO)5Br,Mn(CO)3Cp] with 2-hydroxyacetophenone methanesulfonylhydrazone (apmsh)

Five new complexes, [M(CO)₅(apmsh)] [M = Cr; (1), Mo; (2), W; (3)], [Re(CO)₄Br(apmsh)] (4) and [Mn(CO)₃(apmsh)] (5) have been synthesized by the photochemical reaction of metal carbonyls [M(CO)₆] (M = Cr, Mo and W), [Re(CO)₅Br], and [Mn(CO)₃Cp] with 2-hydroxyacetophenone methanesulfonylhydrazone (apmsh). The complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, f.t.-i.r. and ¹H spectroscopy. Spectroscopic studies show that apmsh behaves as a monodentate ligand coordinating via the imine N donor atom in [M(CO)₅(apmsh)] (1–4) and as a tridentate ligand in (5).     

Synthesis of tris(β,β,γ-oximinoalkyl)amines from aliphatic nitro compounds and methyl vinyl ketone

A general strategy for the assembly of previously unknown tris(β,β,γ-oximinoalkyl)amines from aliphatic nitro compounds and methyl vinyl ketone is described. The strategy involves N,N-bis(siloxy)enamines as key intermediates. The latter are accessible by double silylation of alkylnitro compounds. Nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes of tris(β,β,γ-oximinoalkyl)amines are prepared and structurally characterized.     

Spatial distribution and risk assessment of radioactivity and heavy metal levels of sediment,surface water and fish samples from Lake Van,Turkey

In this study, radioactivity levels of 228 lake water samples, 63 upper and depth sediment samples and 12 fish samples from Lake Van were investigated from 2005 to 2008 and the distribution patterns of the radionuclides were presented. Analysis included gross alpha–beta and total radium isotopes activities and uranium concentrations of the water, and gross alpha and gross beta activities and relevant ²³⁸U, ²³²Th and ⁴⁰K activity of the sediment and fish samples of the lake. Mean gross alpha, gross beta and radium isotopes activities of lake water were found 0.74 ± 0.46, 0.02 ± 0.01 and 0.06 ± 0.04 Bq/L, respectively. Mean gross alpha and beta activities in upper and depth sediments were found to be 41 ± 6 and 1,514 ± 74 Bq/kg; 77 ± 5 and 394 ± 24 Bq/kg at a 95 % confidence level, respectively. Mean activities of ²³⁸U, ²³²Th and ⁴⁰K activity concentrations in upper and depth sediments were determined to be 225 ± 22, 70 ± 7 and 486 ± 39 Bq/kg; 174 ± 4, 63 ± 3 and 263 ± 25 Bq/kg, respectively. The mean gross alpha and beta, ²³⁸U, ²³²Th and ⁴⁰K aktivities in fish samples were established as 47 ± 18, 470 ± 12, 0.57 ± 0.220, 0.022 ± 0.006, 319 ± 11 Bq/kg, respectively. The transfer factor from lake water to fish tissues, annual intake by humans consuming fish, and annual committed effective doses were estimated and evaluated.     

An Easy Synthesis of Monofluorinated Derivatives of Pyrroles from β-Fluoro-β-Nitrostyrenes

The catalyst-free conjugate addition of pyrroles to β-Fluoro-β-nitrostyrenes was investigated. The reaction was found to proceed under solvent-free conditions to form 2-(2-Fluoro-2-nitro-1-arylethyl)-1H-pyrroles. The effectiveness of this approach was demonstrated through the preparation of a series of the target products in a quantitative yield. The kinetics of a conjugate addition of pyrrole was studied in detail to reveal the substituent effect and activation parameters of the reaction. The subsequent base-induced elimination of nitrous acid afforded a series of novel 2-(2-Fluoro-1-arylvinyl)-1H-pyrroles prepared in up to an 85% isolated yield. The two-step sequence herein proposed is an indispensable alternative to a direct reaction with elusive and unstable 1-Fluoroacetylenes.     

First-principles studies of the electronic structure and optical properties of AgBO<Subscript>3</Subscript> (B=Nb,Ta) in the paraelectric phase

The electronic energy-band structure, density of states (DOS), and optical properties of AgBO₃ in the paraelectric cubic phase have been studied by using density functional theory within the local density approximation for exchange-correlation for the first time. The band structure shows a band gap of 1.533 eV (AgNbO₃)and 1.537 eV (AgTaO₃)at (M-⌈)point in the Brillouin zone. The optical spectra of AgBO₃ in the photon energy range up to 30 eV are investigated under the scissor approximation. The real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function and — thus the optical constants such as reflectivity, absorption coefficient, electron energy-loss function, refractive index, and extinction coefficient — are calculated. We have also made some comparisons with related experimental and theoretical data that is available.
