We investigate the effects of perturbative branching upon the accuracy with which one can determine the charge of the underlying QCD quantum from the charge structure of a given hadronic jet. We show explicitly how at asymptoticQ 2 we lose all such charge information. We investigate these effects at current PETRA energies using the Monte Carlo program of Fox and Wolfram; and find that a reasonably accurate charge determination is still possible at these energies. We suggest the variation of the jet charge structure with multiplicity, at a given energy, as a sensitive probe of the onset of perturbative branching inside jets.  相似文献

We investigate the stability of magnetically trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and thermal clouds near the transition temperature at small distances 0.5 microm< or =d< or =10 microm from a microfabricated silicon chip. For a 2 microm thick copper film, the trap lifetime is limited by Johnson noise induced currents and falls below 1 s at a distance of 4 microm. A dielectric surface does not adversely affect the sample until the attractive Casimir-Polder potential significantly reduces the trap depth.  相似文献

We study the problem of reconstructing a low‐rank matrix, where the input is an n × m matrix M over a field and the goal is to reconstruct a (near‐optimal) matrix that is low‐rank and close to M under some distance function Δ. Furthermore, the reconstruction must be local, i.e., provides access to any desired entry of by reading only a few entries of the input M (ideally, independent of the matrix dimensions n and m). Our formulation of this problem is inspired by the local reconstruction framework of Saks and Seshadhri (SICOMP, 2010). Our main result is a local reconstruction algorithm for the case where Δ is the normalized Hamming distance (between matrices). Given M that is ‐close to a matrix of rank (together with d and ), this algorithm computes with high probability a rank‐d matrix that is ‐close to M. This is a local algorithm that proceeds in two phases. The preprocessing phase reads only random entries of M, and stores a small data structure. The query phase deterministically outputs a desired entry by reading only the data structure and 2d additional entries of M. We also consider local reconstruction in an easier setting, where the algorithm can read an entire matrix column in a single operation. When Δ is the normalized Hamming distance between vectors, we derive an algorithm that runs in polynomial time by applying our main result for matrix reconstruction. For comparison, when Δ is the truncated Euclidean distance and , we analyze sampling algorithms by using statistical learning tools. We calculate the ratios of πp, Kp and ψp total cross sections utilizing coupled homogeneous linear integral equations supplemented with SU(4) symmetry for the couplings. Kinematic effects arising from mass splitting and tmin effects are crucial. We obtain σπpσKp ≈ 1.7 andσψpσπp150.  相似文献

A survey on attitudes toward mathematics of third- and fifth-grade students enrolled in a large urban school district was conducted in the spring of 1994 as part of a review of the mathematics program. Student responses to survey items were analyzed with respect to gender and grade level. Although girls and boys were equally likely to indicate that they like mathematics, in both Grades 3 and 5, boys were more likely than girls to report being good at mathematics. This result has often been reported for older students but has rarely been explored in younger children. Some gender and grade differences were observed in students' attitudes towards the specific strands of mathematics. Both girls and boys in Grade 5 were more likely than students in Grade 3 to believe that mathematics was relevant to their lives. Virtually all children thought that both girls and boys needed to study mathematics. No gender or grade differences in students' beliefs regarding the process of learning mathematics were observed. The results support the need for further research to identify variables that influence the development of student perceptions and attitudes toward mathematics during elementary school.  相似文献
