Let H be a separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space endowed with a symplectic structure and let L0H be a Lagrangian subspace. Using the results of [A. Abbondandolo, P. Majer, Infinite dimensional Grassmannians, math.AT/0307192], we show that the Fredholm Lagrangian-Grassmannian FL0(Λ) has the homotopy type of Gc(L0), the Grassmannian of all Lagrangian subspaces of H that are compact perturbations of L0. It is well known that the latter has the homotopy type of the quotient U(∞)/O(∞). As a corollary, we recover a result by B. Booss-Bavnbek and K. Furutani (see [B. Booss-Bavnbek, K. Furutani, Symplectic functional analysis and spectral invariants, Contemp. Math. 242 (1999) 53-83; K. Furutani, Fredholm-Lagrangian-Grassmannian and the Maslov index, J. Geom. Phys. 51 (2004) 269-331]) that the L0-Maslov index is an isomorphism between the fundamental group of FL0(Λ) and the integers.  相似文献

Given a smooth Lagrangian path, both in the finite and in the infinite dimensional (Fredholm) case, we introduce the notion of partial signatures at each isolated intersection of the path with the Maslov cycle. For real-analytic paths, we give a formula for the computation of the Maslov index using the partial signatures; a similar formula holds for the spectral flow of real-analytic paths of Fredholm self-adjoint operators on real separable Hilbert spaces. As applications of the theory, we obtain a semi-Riemannian version of the Morse index theorem for geodesics with possibly conjugate endpoints, and we prove a bifurcation result at conjugate points along semi-Riemannian geodesics. We study the singularities of the exponential map in semi Riemannian locally symmetric manifolds. Conjugate points along geodesics depend only on real negative eigenvalues of the curvature tensor, and their contribution to the Maslov index of the geodesic is computed explicitly. We prove that degeneracy of conjugate points, which is a phenomenon that can only occur in semi-Riemannian geometry, is caused in the locally symmetric case by the lack of diagonalizability of the curvature tensor. The case of Lie groups endowed with a bi-invariant metric is studied in some detail, and conditions are given for the lack of local injectivity of the exponential map around its singularities.  相似文献

Octahedral, six‐coordinate Co2+ can exist in two spin states: S = 3/2 and S = 1/2. The difference in energy between high spin (S = 3/2) and low spin (S = 1/2) is dependent on both the ligand mix and coordination stereochemistry. B3LYP calculations on combinations of neutral imidazole, NH3, and H2O ligands show that low‐spin isomers are stabilized by axial H2O ligands and in structures that also include trans pairs of equatorial NH3 and protonated imidazole ligands, spin crossover structures are predicted from spin state energy differences. Occupied Co d orbitals from the DFT calculations provide a means of estimating effective ligand strength for homoleptic and mixed ligand combinations. We use a convexity condition to prove the finiteness of the number of light rays joining a pointlike source with a pointlike observer in a stationary relativistic spacetime. The result is extended to the case of conformally stationary metrics under suitable boundedness assumptions on the conformal factor. We discuss our hypotheses in some explicit examples of standard static and stationary Lorentzian manifolds.  相似文献

 We show that a static Lorentzian manifold satisfying a completeness assumption is geodesically connected. In particular, such condition is satisfied by all compact static manifolds; in the compact case, we also prove the existence of a closed geodesic in every free homotopy class determined by a finite number of deck transformations. We define a variational problem based on the arrival time functional for timelike curves on a Lorentzian manifold parameterized by a fixed constant multiple of their proper time. Under a causality assumption for the manifold , we prove that the stationary points of our problem are geodesics, obtaining an extension of the Fermat's Principle for light rays proven in [14] (see also [2]). Moreover, we study the compactness pr operties of the arrival time functional by global variational techniques. Under intrinsic assumptions on the metric of we get results of existence and multiplicity for geodesics with a given energy between an event and an observer of .  相似文献

Nanowires offer a unique approach for the bottom-up assembly of electronic and photonic devices with the potential of integrating photonics with existing technologies. The anisotropic geometry and mesoscopic length scales of nanowires also make them very interesting systems to study a variety of size-dependent phenomenon where finite-size effects become important. We will discuss the intriguing size-dependent properties of nanowire systems with diameters in the 5–300?nm range, where finite-size and interfacial phenomena become more important than quantum mechanical effects. The ability to synthesize and manipulate nanostructures by chemical methods allows tremendous versatility in creating new systems with well-controlled geometries, dimensions, and functionality, which can then be used for understanding novel processes in finite-sized systems and devices.  相似文献

Given a Lorentzian manifold (M, g), an event p and an observer U in M, then p and U are light conjugate if there exists a lightlike geodesic γ : [0, 1] → M joining p and U whose endpoints are conjugate along γ. Using functional analytical techniques, we prove that if one fixes p and U in a differentiable manifold M, then the set of stationary Lorentzian metrics in M for which p and U are not light conjugate is generic in a strong sense. The result is obtained by reduction to a Finsler geodesic problem via a second order Fermat principle for light rays, and using a transversality argument in an infinite dimensional Banach manifold setup.  相似文献
