The 1H and 13C NMR chemical shifts of Strychnos alkaloids revisited at the DFT level

The density functional theory calculation of ¹H and ¹³C NMR chemical shifts in a series of ten 10 classically known Strychnos alkaloids with a strychnine skeleton was performed at the PBE0/pcSseg-2//pcseg-2 level. It was found that calculated ¹H and ¹³C NMR chemical shifts provided a markedly good correlation with experiment characterized by a mean absolute error of 0.08 ppm in the range of 7 ppm for protons and 1.67 ppm in the range of 150 ppm for carbons, so that a mean absolute percentage error was as small as ~1% in both cases.     

Optical absorption bistability in quasi-one-dimensional peierls semiconductors

The optical absorption coefficient γ of a thin film of a Peierls semiconductor has been calculated in the dipole approximation for direct interband transitions as a function of intensity I and central frequency ω₀ of a quasi-monochromatic frequency spectrum near the lower optical transition edge. It is shown that the γ(I, ω₀) dependence is strongly nonlinear, and within a certain region of I and ω₀ variation, not single-valued, which indicates the onset of resonator-free optical bistability with increasing absorption.     

Synthesis of heterocyclic systems with a carbohydrate fragment

Levoglucosenone reacts with α-aminoazoles to yield azolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine systems fused with a carbohydrate fragment. The reaction oocurs much more smoothly than in the case of other α,β-unsaturated ketones. The reactions of levoglucosenone with β-dicarbonyl compounds (dimedone, barbituric acid) in the presence of a base results in the pyran ring closure, which has never been observed earlier in reactions of β-dicarbonyl compounds with α,β-unsaturated ketones under the conditions of basic catalysis. Extremely short pulses of amplified self-induced transparency

The propagation of optical pulses in a waveguide containing atoms with resonant amplification and absorption has been analyzed. The possibility of amplification-based realization of a pulse compression regime similar to self-induced transparency has been demonstrated up to a duration comparable with the inverse frequency of the atomic transition (several femtoseconds) with a simultaneous increase in the peak amplitude.     

Measurement of the differential cross section and of the tensor and vector analyzing powers for the fragmentation of 4.5-GeV/c deuterons on beryllium in the reaction involving proton emission at an angle of 80 mrad

The invariant differential cross section, the tensor analyzing power A _yy , and the vector analyzing power A _y for the reaction ⁹Be(d, p)X are measured at an initial deuteron momentum of 4.5 GeV/c and a proton detection angle of about 80 mrad. The data obtained for the differential cross section are consistent with the results of measurements at 3.5 and 5.78 GeV/c and a proton emission angle of 2.5°. The values found for the tensor analyzing power A _yy are compared with similar data obtained previously for the deuteron-fragmentation process occurring on a carbon target at various values of the initial deuteron momentum and leading to proton emission at zero angle. The data on the differential cross section for the reaction ⁹Be(d, p)X can be satisfactorily described within the relativistic impulse approximation by using standard deuteron wave functions; however, the approach based on this conceptual framework proves to be inadequate in dealing with data on the tensor analyzing power. These results indicate that it is necessary either to change the method for describing the relativistic deuteron or to take into account additional mechanisms.     

Semiempirical calculation of the fine structure of the indium ion

The fine-structure parameters of a series of configurations of the first ion of indium and the gyromagnetic ratios in intermediate coupling are calculated by a semiempirical method in the single-configuration approximation.     

On the factors governing the minimum size of light beams during self-focusing

The final stage of self-focusing of 500-ps pulses of a neodymium laser in silicate and phosphate glasses and in the nonlinear liquids perfluorooctane, benzene, and toluene is studied theoretically and experimentally. The formation of spatial solitons, which are stable due to the nonlinearity saturation, is demonstrated. It is found that the intensity of the nonlinearity saturation is close to that of the threshold breakdown for glasses and the role of stimulated Raman scattering is significant for liquids.
