The influence of irradiation and grafting on the crystallinity of three base polymers has been investigated with differential scanning calorimetry. Grafting has the largest effect on the base polymer crystallinity and results in a reduction of the crystallinity. The thermal degradation of the base polymers and grafted films has been investigated with thermogravimetric analysis. The extent of the fluorination of the base polymer, the irradiation method, and the graft level all influence the thermal degradation and its activation energy. It is proposed that the variation of the chain lengths of the grafted polystyrene chains is actually a primary underlying factor responsible for the influence of these various parameters on the degradation process. The first results of a comparative thermal analysis of some fuel‐cell membranes are also presented, and the promise and shortcomings of this method are discussed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have studied the effect of interface heterogeneity on fracture, at both local and global scales. The single cantilever beam adhesion test was used to investigate interfacial fracture between polycarbonate plates and an elastic/fragile epoxy adhesive. Two surface treatments were applied to a (given) polycarbonate plate giving zones of strong and weak adhesion parallel to the crack direction. Calculated fracture energies differed from those expected from a simple rule-of-mixtures. A perturbation method, proposed by Rice, was used and results compared with crack fronts observed in situ. The technique was applied successfully but the difference in values of stress intensity factor between the zones was found substantially different from the experimental value. In an attempt to explain discrepancies, specimens with discontinuous crack fronts (adhesive and/or plates severed along the strong/weak adhesion frontier) were tested. Good agreement was found with the rule-of-mixtures predictions raising questions about the role of crack front continuity in load transfer.  相似文献

Recent experimental and theoretical improvements of resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) are summarized to investigate elastic constants of phases in shape memory alloys. The proposed inversion procedure, described in this work, is particularly suitable to reliable evaluation of the temperature dependence of elastic constants of low-symmetry ferroelastic materials which may be strongly elastically anisotropic and tend to exist in twinned forms. The method is applicable even for the evaluation of single-crystal elastic constants from RUS measurements on microtwinned crystals, since it involves a homogenization algorithm based on the macroscopic deformation response of the layered structure. This potentially allows performing meaningful acoustic studies on samples with a general submicron-size layered structure.  相似文献

This paper reports on a comparative study of the solid-state fluorination of the cubic and hexagonal fullerene C60 modifications by crystalline manganese trifluoride. It is shown that the variation of the fullerene crystal structure does not noticeably affect the composition of the fluorination products. The enthalpy and entropy of sublimation of the C60 hexagonal phase are experimentally determined for the first time.  相似文献

Thin narrow Au stripes suitable for propagating long-range surface plasmon-polaritons were deposited by evaporation and lift-off on a thermal oxide layer on a silicon substrate, and modified by direct adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements reveal that BSA adsorbs onto the Au stripes from phosphate buffer solutions forming an adlayer having an average thickness of about 2 nm (surface mass density of about 2 ng/mm2). Comparisons with a simple adsorption model suggest the side-on adsorption of a single monolayer of BSA followed by denaturation and flattening. The BSA-coated stripes have an increased surface roughness compared to a virgin stripe.  相似文献

Degeneracies near the real axis in a complex-extended parameter space of a Hermitian Hamiltonian are studied. We present a method to measure distributions of such degeneracies on the Riemann sheet of a selected level and apply it in classification of quantum phase transitions. In this paper we first prove a theorem on the nonexistence of pyramidal polynomial basis functions. Then we present a new symmetric composite pyramidal finite element which yields a better convergence than the nonsymmetric one. It has fourteen degrees of freedom and its basis functions are incomplete piecewise triquadratic polynomials. The space of ansatz functions contains all quadratic functions on each of four sub-tetrahedra that form a given pyramidal element.  相似文献
