A new route for the construction of the AB-ring core of Taxol

A new method for the construction of the AB-ring core of Taxol was developed utilizing a new skeletal transformation protocol as a pivotal step. The acid-catalyzed rearrangement of the cyclopentenone-allene photoadduct gave a bridged seven-membered ketone, which was easily transformed, using the intramolecular Suzuki reaction and the oxidative cleavage of the vicinal diol, to the bicyclic diketone.     

Microlocal study of topological Radon transforms and real projective duality

Various topological properties of projective duality between real projective varieties and their duals are obtained by making use of the microlocal theory of (subanalytically) constructible sheaves developed by Kashiwara [M. Kashiwara, Index theorem for constructible sheaves, Astérisque 130 (1985) 193-209] and Kashiwara-Schapira [M. Kashiwara, P. Schapira, Sheaves on Manifolds, Grundlehren Math. Wiss., vol. 292, Springer, Berlin-Heidelberg-New York, 1990]. In particular, we prove in the real setting some results similar to the ones proved by Ernström in the complex case [L. Ernström, Topological Radon transforms and the local Euler obstruction, Duke Math. J. 76 (1994) 1-21]. For this purpose, we describe the characteristic cycles of topological Radon transforms of constructible functions in terms of curvatures of strata in real projective spaces.     

Isolation of o-xylylene (o-quinodimethane) dirivatives. A strong through-bond interaction in 2,3-benzobicyclo[2.2.0]hexane system

Some o-xylylene (o-quinodimethane) derivatives were isolated as stable cyrstalline materials. A strong through-bond interaction in tetracyanoethylene addition product of tetraphenylbenzodicyclobutadiene ($\text{21}$ is suggested.     

Synthesis and cation-binding properties of poly-and bis(thiacrown ether)s

Poly- and bis(thiacrown ether) derivatives in which some oxygen atoms of benzocrown ether moiety are replaced by sulfur atoms have been synthesized. Their cation-binding abilities were investigated by using the solvent extraction method. The poly- and bis(benzothiacrown ether)s showed great affinity for silver ion, being more excellent in the affinity than the corresponding monocyclic analogs. They, however, possess very poor cation-binding ability for alkali and alkaline-earth metal ions. The poly- and bis(thiacrown ether)s also bind mercuric ions effectively, whereas the corresponding monomeric analogs do not at all.     

Effects of added metal ions on the interaction between polyvinylpyrrolidone and azo dyes carrying hydroxyl groups

The extent of binding of chrome violet, which is a monoazo dye and involves two hydroxyl groups in o and o′ positions to azo group, by polyvinylpyrrolidone is markedly enhanced in the presence of Co²⁺ ion. The amount of binding in the presence of 1 × 10^?4 mol/L of Co²⁺ ion increases by a factor of about 10 compared to that in the absence of the metal ion. Ni²⁺ and Zn²⁺ ions do not perceptively influence the binding affinity of the dye. Cu²⁺ ion, in contrast, suppresses the binding. To investigate further the action of added metal ions, a cobalt–complex dye was prepared and its binding property for the polymer was compared to that of chrome violet in the presence of metal ions. Some possible mechanisms for the enhancement of chrome violet binding by the addition of Co²⁺ ion are described.     

Synthesis and spectral behavior of 5-methyl-3-phenyl-1,3-oxazolidin-2-ones using NMR

Heterocyclic compounds of four 5-methyl-3-phenyl-1,3-oxazolidin-2-ones have been synthesized by the reaction of N-2-hydroxyethyl- or N-2-hydroxypropylanilines with phosgene in the presence of pyridine. From the spectral behavior, the title compounds are found to exist in the trans and cis forms.     

Mechanistic studies of the isomerization of peroxynitrite to nitrate catalyzed by distal histidine metmyoglobin mutants

Hemoproteins are known to react with the strong nitrating and oxidizing agent peroxynitrite according to different mechanisms. In this article, we show that the iron(iii) forms of the sperm whale myoglobin (sw Mb) mutants H64A, H64D, H64L, F43W/H64L, and H64Y/H93G catalyze the isomerization of peroxynitrite to nitrate. The two most efficient catalysts are H64A (k(cat) = (5.8 +/- 0.1) x 10(6) M(-1) s(-1), at pH 7.5 and 20 degrees C) and H64D metMb (k(cat) = (4.8 +/- 0.1) x 10(6) M(-1) s(-1), at pH 7.5 and 20 degrees C). The pH dependence of the values of k(cat) shows that HOONO is the species which reacts with the heme. In the presence of physiologically relevant concentrations of CO(2) (1.2 mM), the decay of peroxynitrite is accelerated by these metMb mutants via the concurring reaction of HOONO with their iron(iii) centers. Studies in the presence of free added tyrosine show that the metMb mutants prevent peroxynitrite-mediated nitration. The efficiency of the different sw metMb mutants correlates with the value of k(cat). Finally, we show that sw WT-metMb is nitrated to a larger extent than horse heart metMb, a result that suggests that the additional Tyr151 is a site of preferential nitration. Again, the extent of nitration of the tyrosine residues of the metMb mutants correlates with the values of k(cat).
