Chern and Pontryagin Numbers in Perfect Symmetries of Spheres

The paper presents a procedure for constructing smooth actions of finite perfect groups on spheres with fixed point sets having certain prescribed properties (Theorem A); in particular, having any prescribed configuration of Chern and Pontryagin numbers (Corollary C). The main ingredients used are equivariant thickening and equivariant surgery.     

Deposition of boron nitride on graphite at 1300 K

A method for the deposition of BN onto graphite and other substrates is described. Boron trichloride (BCl₃) and ammonia (NH₃) diluted with Ar were used as reacting gases. The deposition process was carried out at 1300 K as well as lower temperatures in an open system at pressures of 1 atm. The consequences of the introduction of hydrogen to the system were considered. It was demonstrated that the replacement of argon with hydrogen increases the efficiency of the process as well as the theoretical rate of BN deposition. However, the acceleration of the deposition seems to be unprofitable, because the resulting supersaturation leads to the formation of an amorphous phase. Optical and conductive properties of AlSi-alloy/SiCp composites: application in modelling CO2 laser processing of composites

The optical properties—reflectivity, real part of the refractive index, absorption coefficient as well as the thermal and electrical conductivity of AlSi-alloy/SiC_p composite were measured. The optical parameters and both conductivities decreased with the increase of SiC_p particles volume in AlSi-alloy matrix. This decrease was almost linear for the volume fraction of SiC_p particle up to 10 vol% of the total mass of the composite. For the 15 vol% of SiC_p particles, the departure from linearity is connected with the presence of additional phases in AlSi-alloy/SiC_p composite materials. The measured temperature dependencies of optical reflectivity and electrical conductivity for AlSi-alloy/SiC_p 15 vol% are of metallic character. Modelling of the interaction of the CO₂ laser radiation with AlSi-alloy/SiC_p 15 vol% composite should allow to estimate the initiation time at which the surface composite reaches melting temperature.     

9‐Methyl‐3‐phenyl­diazenyl‐9H‐carbazole: X‐ray and DFT‐calculated structures

The title compound, C₁₉H₁₅N₃, was prepared by condensation of 3‐nitroso­carbazole and aniline with subsequent methyl­ation. The structure is built up of stacks of almost planar mol­ecules. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations predict a completely planar conformation, different from that observed in the crystal lattice. HOMA (harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity) indices, calculated for three aromatic rings, demonstrate the small influence of the azo substituent on π electrons in the carbazole system.
