This study explored the ability of blind and sighted listeners to detect reflections, “echoes”, of burst trains or continuous noise. Echo detection was compared by presenting 5 ms bursts, rates from 1 to 64 bursts, with a continuous white noise, all during 500 ms. Sounds were recorded in an ordinary room through an artificial binaural head, the loudspeaker 1 m behind it. The reflecting object was an aluminum disk, diameter 0.5 m, placed at 1 m. The sounds were presented to 12 blind and 26 sighted participants in a laboratory using a 2-Alternative-Forced-Choice methodology. The task was to detect which of two sounds contained an echo. In Experiment 2, 1.5 m distance sounds were presented to the blind only. At 1 m, detection for the blind increased up to 64 bursts/500 ms, but for the sighted up to 32 bursts. At 1.5 m, the peak performance for the blind was at 32 bursts. At the 1 m, but not at the 1.5 m distance, the blind performed best with continuous white noise. The overlap in time of signal and echo at 1 m for 64 bursts was 60%, but at 1.5 m 82%. Avoiding an overlap between emitted bursts and returning echoes seems important for echolocation, indicating that an acoustic gaze, analogous to in echolocating animals, may also exist in humans.  相似文献

Let P2n+1 be a two-cell complex which is formed by attachinga (2n + 1)-cell to a 2m-sphere by a suspension map. We constructa universal space U for P2n+1 in the category of homotopy associative,homotopy commutative H-spaces. By universal, we mean that Uis homotopy associative, homotopy commutative and has the propertythat any map f: P2n+1 Y to a homotopy associative, homotopycommutative H-space Y extends to a uniquely determined H-map: U Y. We then prove upper and lowerbounds of the H-homotopy exponent of U. In the case of a modpr, Moore space U is the homotopy fibre S2n+1{pr} of the pr-powermap on S2n+1, and we reproduce Neisendorfer's result that S2n+1{pr}is homotopy associative, homotopy commutative and that the pr-powermap on S2n+1{pr} is null homotopic.  相似文献

We report experimental results at 1.057 GHz that demonstrate the ability of a planar left-handed lens, with a relative refractive index of -1, to form images that overcome the diffraction limit. The left-handed lens is a planar slab consisting of a grid of printed metallic strips over a ground plane, loaded with series capacitors (C) and shunt inductors (L). The measured half-power beamwidth of the point-source image formed by the left-handed lens is 0.21 effective wavelengths, which is significantly narrower than that of the diffraction-limited image corresponding to 0.36 wavelengths.  相似文献

High efficiency, broad bandwidth, and robust angular tolerance are key considerations in photonic device design. Here, a few‐layer, asymmetric light transmitting metasurface that simultaneously satisfies all the above requirements is reported. The metasurface consists of coupled metallic sheets. It has a measured transmission efficiency of 80%, extinction ratio of 13.8 dB around 1.5 μm, and a full width half maximum bandwidth of 1.7 μm. It is as thin as 290 nm, has good performance tolerance against the angle of incidence and constituent nano‐structure geometry variations. This work demonstrates a practical asymmetric light transmission device with optimal performance for large scale manufacturing.
