Nonlinear optical properties of regioregular main‐chain polyesters

We have prepared new polyesters containing quadratic, nonlinear optical (NLO) active chromophores covalently incorporated into the main chain. In these polymers, the sequence of the chromophore units along the main chain is rigorously head to tail. All the polyesters are processable, both in the melt and in solution. For one polyester, a full second‐order NLO characterization has been performed. An out‐of‐resonance d₃₃ coefficient of 21 pm/V at 1368 nm has been measured. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis of potential selective cox‐2 enzyme inhibitors derived from ethyl ester of 2‐isothiocyanato‐5‐phenyl‐3‐thiophenecarboxylic acid

Derivatives containing the thieno[2,3‐d]pyrimidin‐4‐one system, potential selective COX‐2 inhibitors, were prepared starting from ethyl ester of 2‐isothiocyanato‐5‐phenyl‐3‐thiophenecarboxylic acid ( 2 ); their structural elucidation is also reported.     

Photochromic reverse mode polymer dispersed liquid crystals

Control of light intensity and colour are two of the major features required in the realization of smart windows. We designed a bi-functional polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film in order to satisfy such requirements, i.e. it is able both to modulate the optical transmission, if an external electric field is applied, and to change colour if exposed to sunlight. A monomer/liquid crystal mixture was doped with a small amount of photochromic material and homeotropically aligned by means of rough surfaces. A transparent and pale pink coloured film was achieved after photopolymerization. Such a film changes colour upon exposure for some seconds to sunlight or ultraviolet radiation in a persistent but reversible manner. In addition, the film appears transparent without the application of an electric field (OFF state) and becomes opaque on application of a driving voltage of about 75 V (ON state), and thus the film operates in reverse mode with respect to conventional PDLCs.     

Continuous reaction system to investigate the dispersion polymerization of vinyl monomers in supercritical carbon dioxide

A laboratory‐scale continuous reaction system using a stirred tank reactor was assembled in our laboratory to study the dispersion polymerization of vinyl monomers in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO₂). The apparatus was equipped with a suitable downstream separation section to collect solid particles entrained in the effluent stream from the reactor, whose monomer concentration could be measured online with a gas chromatograph. The dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate in scCO₂ was selected as a model process to be investigated in the apparatus. The experiments were performed at 65 °C and 25 MPa with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator and a reactive polysiloxane macromonomer as a surfactant to investigate the effect of the mean residence time of the reaction mixture on the monomer conversion, polymerization rate, polymer molecular weight, and particle size distribution. The results were compared with those obtained in batch polymerizations carried out under similar operative conditions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. CHEMILUMINESCENCE FROM THE OXIDATION OF AUXIN DERIVATIVES

Abstract— The thiophenyl ester of indole-3-acetic acid and indole-3-acetonitrile produce chemiluminescence in aerated dimethylsulfoxide in the presence of potassium t -butoxide. The emitter is the aromatic aldehyde. In the case of acetonitrile, the other product expected from the cleavage of an intermediate dioxetane, cyanate/isocyanate, has also been identified. Other auxins also chemiluminesce under similar conditions, but the emitters have not been properly identified.
These systems are models for the peroxidase catalyzed oxidation of indole-3-acetic acid to indole-3-carboxaldehyde and as such support the earlier inference (Vidigal et al , 1975) that the excited aldehyde is generated in the enzymic process.
An additional result is the observation of an exciplex between excited indole-3-carboxaldehyde and the thiophenylester of indole-3-acetic acid. This appears to be the first case of chemical generation of an exciplex by a route other than radical ion reaction, presumably by the dioxetane route.     

The reactivity of the A-CH=N-NR-CX-B system. 1,3,4-Oxadiazoles and 2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1,2,4-triazin-3-ones through the 1–5 and 1–6 cyclization reactions of α-thienylglyoxal monosemicarbazones

The factors influencing the reactivity of α-thienylglyoxal monosemicarbazones when treated with cyclizing reagents (bromine/sodium acetate and hydrobromic acid in acetic acid) were investigated. Depending on the experimental conditions, on the position of the substituent on the semicarbazide residue, and on the cyclizing agent, the substrates 1a-e give the semicarbazone bromides 2a-b, 5 , the 1,3,4-oxadiazoles 3a-c , the 1,2,4-triazine 11 and the 2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1,2,4-triazine-3-ones 6, 8 and 9 . Compound 6 by thermolysis undergoes ring contraction in the Δ²-1,3,4-oxadiazoline 12 , while treatment with base involves the conversion of 6 into 1,2,4-triazol-5-one 13 . Ir, nmr and mass spectra support the reported structures.     

On the supposed equilibrium Ph6Pb2Ph4Pb+Ph2Pb in solution

The reaction between pentadeuteriophenyllithium and hexaphenyldilead combined with new measurements of isotopic exchange between Ph₆Pb₂ (labelled with RaD) and Ph₄Pb, have shown that the dilead compound is undissociated in solution. These results cast doubt upon the previously reported equilibrium: Ph₆Pb₂Ph₄Pb+Ph₂Pb.     

Azobenzene complexes of dicyclopentadienyltitanium and dicyclopentadienylvanadium

Reactions of azobenzene with dicarbonyldicyclopentadienyltitanium(II), Ti(π-C₅H₅)₂(CO)₂, and dicyclopentadienylvanadium(II), V(π-C₅H₅)₂, have yielded the corresponding dicyclopentadienylmetal-azobenzene complexes.     

Reactivity of 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazoles. Nucleophilic behaviour of some 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazoles: Model compounds

The ambident nucleophilic behaviour of some 2-amino-5-H-1,3,4-thiadiazoles in alkylation, acylation and nitrosation reaction has been verified. The structures assigned to the 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazoles ( 1a-i ) and to the Δ²-1,3,4-thiadiazolines ( 2a-e ) agree with the spectral data.
