Two random traffic streams are competing for the service time of a single server (multiplexer). The streams form two queues, primary (queue 1) and secondary (queue 0). The primary queue is served exhaustively, after which the server switches over to queue 0. The duration of time the server resides in the secondary queue is determined by the dynamic evolution in queue 1. If there is an arrival to queue 1 while the server is still working in queue 0, the latter is immediately gated, and the server completes service there only to the gated jobs, upon which it switches back to the primary queue. We formulate this system as a two-queue polling model with a single alternating server and with randomly-timed gated (RTG) service discipline in queue 0, where the timer there depends on the arrival stream to the primary queue. We derive Laplace–Stieltjes transforms and generating functions for various key variables and calculate numerous performance measures such as mean queue sizes at polling instants and at an arbitrary moment, mean busy period duration and mean cycle time length, expected number of messages transmitted during a busy period and mean waiting times. Finally, we present graphs of numerical results comparing the mean waiting times in the two queues as functions of the relative loads, showing the effect of the RTG regime.  相似文献

In this Letter we provide what is believed to be the first experimental evidence of suppression of the number of filaments for high-intensity laser pulses propagating in air by beam astigmatism. We also show that the number, pattern, and spatial stability of the filaments can be controlled by varying the angle that a focusing lens makes with the axial direction of propagation. This new methodology can be useful for applications involving atmospheric propagation, such as remote sensing.  相似文献

Multiple filamentation induced by input-beam ellipticity   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We provide what is to our knowledge the first experimental evidence that multiple filamentation (MF) of ultra-short pulses can be induced by input beam ellipticity. Unlike noise-induced MF, which results in complete beam breakup, the MF pattern induced by small input beam ellipticity appears as a result of nucleation of annular rings surrounding the central filament. Moreover, our experiments show that input beam ellipticity can dominate the effect of noise (transverse modulational instability), giving rise to predictable and highly reproducible MF patterns. The results are explained with a theoretical model and simulations.  相似文献

The standard explanation for multiple filamentation of laser pulses is that it is caused by noise in the input beam. We propose an alternative explanation that is based on deterministic vectorial (polarization) effects. We present numerical simulations in support of the vectorial-effects explanation and suggest a simple experiment for deciding whether multiple filamentation is due to vectorial effects.  相似文献

We analyze the combined effect of small time dispersion and nonparaxiality on self-focusing and its ability to arrest the blowup of laser pulses by deriving reduced equations that depend on only the propagation distance and time. We calculate the pulse duration for which time dispersion dominates over nonparaxiality, or vice versa. We identify additional terms (shock term, group-velocity nonparaxiality, etc.)that should be retained when time dispersion and nonparaxiality are of comparable magnitude. These additional terms lead to temporal asymmetry, and in the visible spectrum they can dominate over both time dispersion and nonparaxiality.  相似文献

We study independent private-value all-pay auctions with risk-averse players. We show that: (1) Players with low values bid lower and players with high values bid higher than they would bid in the risk neutral case. (2) Players with low values bid lower and players with high values bid higher than they would bid in a first-price auction. (3) Players’ expected utilities in an all-pay auction are lower than in a first-price auction. We also use perturbation analysis to calculate explicit approximations of the equilibrium strategies of risk-averse players and the seller’s expected revenue. In particular, we show that in all-pay auctions the seller’s expected payoff in the risk-averse case may be either higher or lower than in the risk neutral case.  相似文献

We study analytically and numerically the stability of the standing waves for a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a point defect and a power type nonlinearity. A major difficulty is to compute the number of negative eigenvalues of the linearized operator around the standing waves. This is overcome by a perturbation method and continuation arguments. Among others, in the case of a repulsive defect, we show that the standing-wave solution is stable in and unstable in under subcritical nonlinearity. Further we investigate the nature of instability: under critical or supercritical nonlinear interaction, we prove the instability by blowup in the repulsive case by showing a virial theorem and using a minimization method involving two constraints. In the subcritical radial case, unstable bound states cannot collapse, but rather narrow down until they reach the stable regime (a finite-width instability). In the nonradial repulsive case, all bound states are unstable, and the instability is manifested by a lateral drift away from the defect, sometimes in combination with a finite-width instability or a blowup instability.  相似文献
