Infinitesimal Rotary Deformations of Surfaces and Their Application to the Theory of Elastic Shells

We present a variational generalization of the problem of infinitesimal geodesic deformations of surfaces in the Euclidean space E ³. By virtue of rotary deformation, the image of every geodesic curve is an isoperimetric extremal of rotation (in the principal approximation). The results are associated in detail with rotary-conformal deformations. The application of these results to the mechanics of elastic shells is given.

Positron annihilation in alloys containing magnetic clusters

An investigation was made of positron annihilation in Ni-Cu alloys where the short-range order by heat treatment led to formation of magnetic clusters (MC). It is shown that magnetic clusters are effective in positron trapping at a high degree of deformation.     

Electrophysical principles of the theory of pulsed arcs

The article discusses the results of the authors' research on the theory of pulsed arcs. After applying several fundamental assumptions of the theory of ac and dc arcs to pulsed operation conditions, the authors come to the same qualitative relations which Rompe and Weizerl had obtained for a high-current spark discharge. The quantitative relationships obtained by the authors are closer to the results of experiments than the theory of Rompe and Weizel. The article outlines a new approach to the analysis of electrophysical processes in a discharge channel. This is of practical and theoretical importance for the development of the theory of pulsed discharges in gases.     

Growth and defect studies of CdTe particles

The paper reports the epitaxial growth of cadmium telluride (CdTe) particles by thermal deposition on cleaved planes of (001)NaCl and (001)KBr. Using high resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction it was shown that CdTe particles could have different orientation and phase (cubic or hexagonal) depending on the substrate temperature. Their most common defects are twins and stacking faults.     

Magnetization of type-II superconductors in the form of short cylinders and the screening supercurrent distribution in the Bean model

The simplest analytical form of the screening supercurrent distribution is found, and the magnetization of type-II (hard) superconductors in the form of finite-length cylinders and disks (pellets) is calculated. Calculations are carried out in terms of the Bean model taking into account the curvature of magnetic field lines. From this distribution, the total magnetic field intensity and the magnetization hysteresis loop are calculated for such samples in different cases.
