Summary Interference with the lead plate test for fluoride by borate and fluoborate can be eliminated by applying tests for silica and borate to the water drop, these tests allowing positive identification of the presence of silica and borate in the sample.

On the complexity of hydromount-models in full vehicle simulation

The influence of the complexity of hydromount-models on the results in full vehicle simulation is studied. In particular, a Kelvin-Voigt model, a linear lever model and a non-linear model are assessed with respect to their predictive capabilities as compared to the necessary parameterization and computation efforts. The mass spectra of some N-substituted barbitals and their trimethylsilyl derivatives

The mass spectra of N-propyl and N-butyl barbitals show the loss of olefin radical (C_nH_2n-1) in analogy to structurally similar molecules such as N-alkyl succinimides and 3-alkyl uracils. Trimethylsilylation of the N-substituted barbitals suppresses this fragmentation and loss of olefin via apparent McLafferty rearrangement from the even-electron ion, [M – 15]⁺, becomes significant. The trimethylsilyl derivatives of N-allyl barbital and N-phenyl barbital show an unusually facile elimination of the appropriate isocyanate from the molecular ion.     

On the substitution rule for Lebesgue–Stieltjes integrals

We show how two change-of-variables formulæ for Lebesgue–Stieltjes integrals generalize when all continuity hypotheses on the integrators are dropped. We find that a sort of “mass splitting phenomenon” arises.     

Forming biocompatible and nonaggregated nanocrystals in water using amphiphilic polymers

High-quality nanocrystals formed in organic solvents can be completely solubilized in water using amphiphilic copolymers containing poly(ethylene glycol) or PEG. These copolymers are generated using a maleic anhydride coupling scheme that permits the coupling of a wide variety of PEG polymers, both unfunctionalized and functionalized, to hydrophobic tails. Thermogravimetric analysis, size exclusion chromatography, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy all indicate that the copolymers effectively coat the nanocrystals surfaces. The composite nanocrystal-polymer assemblies can be targeted to recognize cancer cells with Her2 receptor and are biocompatible if their surface coatings contain PEG. In the particular case of semiconductor nanocrystals (e.g., quantum dots), the materials in water have the same optical spectra as well as quantum yield as those formed initially in organic solutions.
