Intersubband transport in quantum wells in strong magnetic fields mediated by single- and two-electron scattering

We show theoretically that in quantum wells subjected to a strong magnetic field the intersubband current peaks at magnetic field values, which reveal the underlying specific intersubband scattering mechanism. We have designed and grown a superlattice structure in which such current oscillations are clearly visible, and in which the transition from the purely single-electron to the mixed single- and two-electron scattering regimes can be observed by tuning the applied voltage bias. The measurements were conducted in ultrahigh magnetic fields (up to 45 T) to obtain the full spectrum of the current oscillations.     

On the problem of periodicity and hidden solitons for the KdV model

In continuum limit, the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattice is modeled by a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. It is shown that the long-time behavior of a KdV soliton train emerging from a harmonic excitation has a regular periodicity of right- and left-going trajectories. In a soliton train not all the solitons are visible, the solitons with smaller amplitude are hidden and their influence is seen through the changes of phase shifts of larger solitons. In the case of an external harmonic force several resonance schemes are revealed where both visible and hidden solitons have important roles. The weak, moderate, strong, and dominating fields are distinguished and the corresponding solution types presented.     

Measuring the effect of demagnetization in stacks of gadolinium plates using the magnetocaloric effect

The effect of demagnetization in a stack of gadolinium plates is determined experimentally by using spatially resolved measurements of the adiabatic temperature change due to the magnetocaloric effect. The number of plates in the stack, the spacing between them and the position of the plate on which the temperature is measured are varied. The orientation of the magnetic field is also varied. The measurements are compared to a magnetostatic model previously described. The results show that the magnetocaloric effect, due to the change in the internal field, is sensitive to the stack configuration and the orientation of the applied field. This may have significant implications for the construction of a magnetic cooling device.
