Phonon-polariton meta-atoms for far infrared range

Polarizabilities of spherical subwavelength silica glass particles are investigated having regard to material dispersion. It is shown that the ranges of the negative electric and magnetic polarizabilities almost coincide. This allows the particles in question to be used for producing media with a negative refractive index.     

Traveling refresher courses in atomic emission spectrochemical analysis

The experience of traveling refresher courses organized by professors from UGTU-UPI for workers of plant laboratories at industrial educational centers is summarized.

Asymmetry in the Converse of Schur's Lemma

We show that the converse of Schur's Lemma can hold in the category of right modules, but not the category of left modules, over an appropriate ring. We exhibit classes of rings over which this left-right asymmetry does not occur, and provide new constructions of rings over whose module categories the converse of Schur's Lemma holds. We propose various open problems and avenues for further research concomitant to our work.     

Effect of dust content of the flow on test results in hypersonic wind tunnels

The nature and character of the effect of dust content of the working flow of hypersonic wind tunnels on the results of aerodynamic tests are considered. It is shown that dustiness causes an increase of the drag of slender models and, conversely, a decrease of the drag and damping coefficient of the longitudinal moment of blunt models.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 4, pp. 187–189, July–August, 1970.     

Modeling of spectral dependences for 2D photonic crystal waveguide systems

A numerical algorithm is designed and implemented based on the joint application of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method with absorbing boundary conditions (a combination of the perfectly matched layer (PML) and Mur first-order conditions) and the total-field/scattered-field technique (TF/SF). A complete formulation of the algorithm is given. The results of computing the spectral characteristics of the 2D photonic crystal with defects in the form of waveguides are presented. They demonstrate that it is possible to conduct calculations in a wide range of frequencies.
