A new method has been developed to analyse 15N of the total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) pool. The method operates on a commercial total organic carbon (TOC) analyser coupled to an elemental analyser/isotope ratio mass spectrometer (EA-IRMS). Nitrogen compounds are combusted to nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) by high-temperature catalytic oxidation (HTCO), after which the NOx gas is transferred to an EA-IRMS for isotopic nitrogen analysis. The system is described, including five modifications of the system in order to overcome analytical problems. First, flow paths were modified to run both systems on helium as carrier gas, while complete sample oxidation was maintained. Secondly, the catalyst structure was adapted to allow high injection volumes at the given backpressures delivered by the EA system. Thirdly, we installed a Permapure dehumidification system as the standard Peltier element did not satisfy dehumidification requirements. Finally, we prevented the inflow of atmospheric nitrogen into the system. In a final stage, we are planning to automate the coupled system in order to run a continuous batch of up to 60 samples. We have obtained satisfactory results on the accuracy and precision of 180+/-1 per thousand potassium nitrate samples (IAEA, USGS-32). Running a batch of five samples resulted in a mean isotopic value of 178.8 per thousand with a standard deviation of 2.8 per thousand. Some important issues could not yet be addressed here, and will have to be evaluated once the system is running on a continuous base. However, the results appear promising and this system has the potential to become a method for TD15N analysis. An appropriate TD15N analysis method might open new challenges in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem nitrogen studies, including a more comprehensive study of the dissolved organic nitrogen pool.  相似文献

Old-growth forests of southern Chile represent an important reserve of temperate (rain) forests in the world. Wetter and colder forest ecosystems appear to be more efficient in conserving and recycling N such that mostly non-plant available N species are lost, which could be indicated by more depleted delta15N values of the soil and plants. Hydrological N loss from the old-growth forests in southern Chile occurs mainly via dissolved organic nitrogen and not via dissolved inorganic N. Forest disturbances (e.g. fire, clear-cutting or enhanced N deposition) cause (abrupt) changes in ecosystem N-cycling processes. In this study, we hypothesized that delta15N signatures of soil profiles under old-growth forests could be used as an integrator for ecosystem N-cycling, and changes of these delta15N profiles could be valuable to assess ecosystem resilience towards disturbances. Six old-growth forests were selected in the phytogeographical region of the Valdivian rain forest in southern Chile. One of the sites has been partly burned in February 2002. First, we observed that ecosystems with higher mean annual precipitation and lower mean annual temperature were relatively more depleted in 15N. Secondly, we found that a forest fire caused a 100-fold increase of the nitrate export and induced an enrichment of the soil delta15N signal in the upper 20 cm.  相似文献

Simulations performed for a typical semi-infinite reticulated plastic foam saturated by air show that, at distances less than three Rayleigh wavelengths from the area of mechanical excitation by a circular source, the normal frame velocity is close to the Rayleigh pole contribution. Simulated measurements show that a good order of magnitude estimate of the phase speed and damping can be obtained at small distances from the source. Simulations are also performed for layers of finite thickness, where the phase velocity and damping depend on frequency. They indicate that the normal frame velocity at small distances from the source is always close to the Rayleigh pole contribution and that a good order of magnitude estimate of the phase speed of the Rayleigh wave can be obtained at small distances from the source. Furthermore, simulations show that precise measurements of the damping of the Rayleigh wave need larger distances. Measurements performed on a layer of finite thickness confirm these trends.  相似文献

We consider the energy (or the total bending) of unit vector fields oncompact Riemannian manifolds for which the set of its singularitiesconsists of a finite number of isolated points and a finite number ofpairwise disjoint closed submanifolds. We determine lower bounds for theenergy of such vector fields on general compact Riemannian manifolds andin particular on compact rank one symmetric spaces.
