Luminescent properties of PP and LDPE films and rods doped with the Eu(III)‐La(III) complex

The work is devoted to luminescent properties of trivalent lanthanide complexes dispersed in thermoplastic host matrices. Polyethylene films and polypropylene‐rods, both doped with these complexes, were manufactured using an extrusion technique. Two kinds of dopants were used: Eu(III)‐thenoyltrifluoroacetone‐1,10‐phenanthroline complex (1) and Eu(III)‐La(III)‐1,10‐phenanthroline complex (2). Absorption, excitation, emission spectra and lifetime of luminescence were studied. The impact of the polymer matrix on the emission spectra was investigated. Emission spectra of the films were studied at room and helium temperatures. Time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF‐SIMS) surface mapping showed that in the Eu(III)‐La(III) complex europium forms islands (clusters) with a dimension of 1 µm, whereas lanthanum was dispersed more uniformly in the polymer matrix. Bounds for the principal frequency of nonuniformly loaded strings

n particles (beads) of different masses are mounted at equally spaced points along a string which in itself is weightless, of unit tension and fixed at its endpoints. Given the set of masses, it is shown that the principal frequency of this loaded string becomes minimal if they are arranged decreasing from the center in as nearly a symmetrical order as possible. If a strictly symmetrical increasing arrangement of the masses exists, then this arrangement gives the maximum of the principal frequency. On the product of the distances of a point from the vertices of a polytope

Letx ₁,...,x _m be points in the solid unit sphere ofE _n and letx belong to the convex hull ofx ₁,...,x _m. Then . This implies that all such products are bounded by (2/m) ^m (m −1) ^m−1. Bounds are also given for other normed linear spaces. As an application a bound is obtained for |p(z ₀)| where andp′(z ₀)=0.     

Oxidation reactivity channels for 2-(pyridin-2-yl)-N,N-diphenylacetamides

Synthetic routes to 2-(pyridin-2-yl)-N,N-diphenylacetamide and 2-(6-methylpyridin-2-yl)-N,N-diphenyl-acetamide are described along with results from the chemical oxidation of these compounds with peracetic acid, m-chloroperbenzoic acid, and OXONE. In each case, oxidations generate four products in varying amounts depending on the oxidant and reaction conditions. Each product has been characterized by spectroscopic methods and the molecular structures of several of the new compounds have been confirmed by X-ray crystallography.
